Focus on the things that you have this holiday season, not what you don't

Many people are stressed and upset this time of year, with the holiday shopping season just 7 days away. Manufacturers and businesses both large and small are worried. Families, especially parents are worried. The businesses are worried that they will not profit on "the most wonderful time of the year" and individuals are concerned that they can't go all out for the holidays as they have in years past that were more prosperous. Instead of allowing it to stress you out, try to focus on the things that you do have, both spiritual and physical. If you and your family have managed to keep your own roof over your heads, that is something to be grateful for. If you and your spouse have retained your jobs this year, that is something to be grateful for as well. If you can afford to buy presents, decorations, and a Christmas dinner with all of the trimmings, give thanks to God that you can. Try to impress upon your kids, if you have them, that this time of year is about family, love, and celebration of the birth of Christ, an infant whom when he was born had next to nothing yet he owned the world and all that was in it at the same time. Celebrate the love of God to send Jesus to teach and save us all, not the number of presents under the tree. Drink cocoa, string popcorn for the tree, budget your money (what little you may have) as wisely as you can and try not to focus on what you haven't got or what you wish you had, and instead find in your heart an attitude of gratitude that you and your family have thus far weathered the storm, give thanks for your family and friends and all the things that we all too often have taken for granted in the past.

I really liked what you wrote, I like that Christmas comes very close to the end of the year because it is time to reflect on the year and be grateful for what God has done for you. You may not have all you want and may not have all you desired but all the same God has been good that you are alive healthy and stong and can eat and have a home. Inspite of all the problems, there is a lot of things to be grateful for

I agree, I think that it is shameful how commercial the holiday season has become. Many kids today think that Christmas is all about Santa Clause and presents, when it is about what you said. The closing of another year and time to reflect upon the good, the bad, and even the indifferent. Thank you for your response.

Well said. We were having such a discussion around the kitchen table the other day and the general concensus was this year might actually be one of the least pressure years we feel. It seems that we all know someone or are someone that is struggling to just maintain our own households. It's a given that there just isn't going to be alot of budget for gifts for extended friends and family. We are going to have a couple of cookie exchanges and give trays of goodies to those we usually remember with a gift, there by also taking the pressure off of them to reciprocate. We will also be doing the cocoa thing and I am gathering up all the grandchildren and nieces and nephews and we will be making picture frames for their parents. While they are here, I'm going to take advantage of the child labor I can pay off with cookies, and have them stamp rolls of plain paper to make our own gift wrap. And I am willing to bet that at some point as happens every year, one of the little ones will make the announcement.."Man, this is the best Christmas Ever.!"
