Are you dreading the winter?

I don't know about you, but where we live we usually have lots of rain during the winter followed by snow...until last year. Last winter our snowfall was falling at an alarming rate. We literally couldn't keep up to it and were continuously shoveling our driveways. I also noticed that very few people were shoveling their driveways as much, and hence drivers kept using our driveway to turn around in. I am really dreading winter for fear that history might repeat itself and we might again receive that much snow. Seriously, it was so extreme that we kept getting stuck trying to get out of our neighborhood, couldn't go to work, and it was just really unsafe to drive. We easily had over 4 feet of snow. Plus living here in Vancouver, we are notorious for having the worst drivers in Canada. So, how do you feel about winter?

You are a good neighborhood that you are deligent to shovel your driveways and I am sure the driver would appreciate for your behaviours. It will increase the safety if you can shovel the snowaway. It seems that you seldom communicate with your neighbourhood, why not tell them directly that they should clear the snow in the way before their house so that drivers can pass by? The province that I live seldom falls the snowfall here, but I have ever lived in the city with snowfall occured, thus I can understand your mood. It is really annoying that we should shovel the snow away in the dreadful cold winter continuously. Have a nice day.

Oh I did try complaining to my neighbors but I found that either they couldn't care less, or they promised to shovel but never did. Well, we have a bylaw about that so this year if I see people that aren't shoveling their side of the street, I will call the bylaw dept because it's hazardous to everyone! Plus we had almost 5 feet of snow too, so you really had to be constantly shoveling your driveways, because it was continuously snowing! Anyway, now we're wondering if this winter is going to be as brutal as last winter. Well, enjoy your nice milder climate, wish we had that here.

Oh well then you're welcome to our snow then! lol Actually I can't complain becasue so far this year we only had a little bit of snow and fortunately it left just as quickly.

Wow, it is lucky that you did have a bylaw dept to help solve the disputes there. I think your neighborhood will obey the laws that your community issued. I did not see the snow for more than 2 years, and I really would like to travel to the city with that kind of winter climate again to enjoy the snowfall nomatter how cold it it, fight with the snow and make the snowman there. People are easy to get tired of the current tedious life and want the freshy climate to refresh, so do I.

I hate winter. I like Christmas but I kind of hate to see it come because winter comes along with it. I live outside of Pgh. Pa. and we have nasty winters. My driveway is 175 feet long and the mailbox is at the top by the road, so if it snows to much I can't even get the mail. I don't shovel my driveway or sidewalk. I am disabled so I can't really. I sometimes get friends to do it, but it's soo long I hate to ask anyone. This year I am paying someone to plow it but only after we get four inches or more. I can usually get my car out if it's that amount. The problem is when they plow the roads, they make a mound at the top and it's hard to get thru it. If there is ice forget going anywhere. I don't work, so at least if there is a lot of snow I don't have to drive in it, or worry about getting somewhere at a certain time.

Last winter we actually escaped part of our blizzard, to go to NY & Philly. In Philly we stayed mostly in Chestnut Hill and there was hardly any snow there and we were there for 3 mos! NY was heaven too, no snow at all just that crazy, Atlantic wind! I do sympathize with you being disabled, because of course you need to get someone else to shovel your driveway. Yes I know about that mound what you're referring to. Last year I got stuck in a "mound" and couldn't drive out of it. I finally drove right back home!

Well it's never too late to move someplace warmer? One day we'll definitely have to do that because I know also that my hubby gets tired of me moping all the time about the cold, brutal wind, snow, etc.

You are so lucky to have escaped the snow. I was seeing a guy that wanted to move to Arizona. When I see the weather reports for there and it's freezing here, I think maybe I should have gone.

I live in the southern United States.. whoever says it's not cold in the winter must live quite a bit farther south than me. I am in north carolina currently and let me tell you.. ten degree weather is cold enough for me. I know a lot of people exclaim.. ten degrees! It gets minus whatever where I live.. Well. I don't care.. if it gets cold enough to freeze it gets cold enough for me! This isn't me whining.. this is me complaining about having to replace my water pump every year or two even with insulation and heat lamps. That's what I dread about winter.. having to spend a week or six at a time welling water up to cook or take a bath. Sure some people would kill to have their water source right outside their house for easy welling.. but those people don't live in countries were you get used to having water flow right into your house either.

Oh you definitely have every reason to complain. And no you're not whining at all, just stating I fact. I don't think anyone would enjoy having to lug around well water for their baths, too tedious really, or having to replace their water pump every year. You must get quite a snowfall too I would imagine? The scary part about winter I always say is the increased amount of vehicle accidents. Too many people are careless on the road or are just not accustomed to driving in snowy/icy conditions, hence the increase in automobile accidents. That's what I hate about winter the most.

I can just imagine how cold it must get in South Carolina. I think it's probably more of a dry cold? I was in NY last year and I found the cold freezing weather completely unbearable, with that Arctic chill and there wasn't even snow on the ground, for heaven's sake! Well, I know here in Vancouver it gets to about -10 celsius not sure what that is in Fahrenheit, but I will say that we don't have that brutal, icy, wind that many places have.

Living in South Carolina (Charleston) for 8yrs I can attest it gets COLD !!! cold fronts and the ocean (due to humidity) give cold a whole new meaning.. It may be 30 degrees which is warm to the northern states but Im here to tell you 30 degrees in the south is a northern 10 degrees so when its 10 it feels like 0 and if there is any wind coming off the ocean on a cloudy damp day forget it you think its minus....

Thanks for that compliment, my friend. Yes, our climate here in the Philippines, sometimes hot and sometimes cold but not as cold as their in your country. Because cold temperature here is only 15 to 20 degree Celsius. December up to February is what we call winter here but their is no snow it is very rare... I know that most of the place in there in America, is cold. But I don't think that is a burden when winter comes...Have a nice day!

Hello ilyzium I dread the winter every year. I live in Pennsylvania and we get our fair share of snow here. We have been fortunate enough this year not to have gotten any so far this year but we all know it is coming as it is being called for by this coming week. I think the snow is beautiful I just wish we didn't have to go out into at all. If we could have it in Christmas day and then have it melt away I would be happy enough. The only thing I like about winter is the chance it gives us to cuddle up on the couch with my family and stay warm watching movies.

Oh I remember being in Philly last winter during the snow, well there and a cute little place called Chestnut Hill. Anyway, there was snow while we were there but I can't say that it was a blizzard. Did find it quite cold though. You guys are supposed to be getting snow next week? Yikes that seems a bit early. Keep your fingers crossed that it doesn't happen! I always say the same thing. Let it snow for XMAS and then melt away the next day. I love that too when you're inside all nice and warm and snuggling in front of the fireplace watching some good movies.

Actually we usually get snow around the end of October here so this year we have been lucky not to have any by now but I am still hoping that we don't get any snow next week and if we do I hope it doesn't stick. I am sucking up this nice no snow weather while I can LOL

We had a really hard winter last year and I thought that by now I would be over it and ready to see snow again. I'm not. I don't want to deal with it. We have one car that does okay in the snow, but it's starting to get old and I don't work as close to home as I used to. So yes, I am dreading the winter months.

I know exactly how you feel because our winter last year was BRUTAL!! And I'm hoping that we don't see a repeat of it this year either. Well, with your car make sure it's safe to be on the roads, have your snow tires, etc. I personally don't like driving in the snow, because I will admit that I'm not an experienced driver when it comes to driving in it. We've never really had much snow in previous years, which is why I've rarely driven in it. How much snow did you get last winter? I believe we had close to 5 ft in areas! It's no wonder we were snowed in everywhere. Hopefully it will be warmer everywhere this winter.

We only had about 2 feet, but we are not equiped as a city to deal with any substantial amounts of snow, or snow that lasts more than a day or so. It was even worse because there was an inch of ice both under and on top of the snow. We're getting our car winterized this week, so we'll be ready heaven forbids we have a repeat...

Oh no, we don't have that kind of winter, nor does it get so cold. I live in south India. When I was little, it used to get cold, that all. We did have to wear sweaters. Now with all the environmental problems, we just don't need a sweater at all. I miss that winter though. I would love to experience a little snow, not the way you say you have it there, but just a little where we could have fun.

Well, I guess if you're really craving snow, you could always go to northern India I suppose...?

I don't really mind the snow, if I don't have to go anywhere. But then again, how often does that happen. I usually have somewhere to go all of the time. Last year, I spent the winter in Myrtle Beach. It was really nice, because we only got a light dusting of snow a couple of times the whole winter. Plus, I was on the beach and in a community that had steam rooms and a gym. This year, I am back up north. And, since I am living with a friend, I can't even park my car in the garage. So, I will be sweeping it off every time it snows. However, it won't be as bad as a few years ago when I worked at the car lot and had to sweep off 40 or 50 cars every time it snowed. LOL

Last year it was just terrible all over Canada and the US.

Where I'm from, our winters usually aren't that bad. However, this year has been unseasonable cold and our summer was not dry as it usually is. I have a feeling that we are in for a long, cold winter. Although it will be nice to have snow, I dread ice and sleet. In addition, people around here drive in snow and ice like it is the middle of summer. So, yes, I think I am dreading it a bit.

The winter - When the winter is coming, I prefer to stay at home and spend most time on surfing the Internet and do my work at home. Only when it is snowing outside, then I may go out to enjoy the beautiful scenery after the snow.
I am really dreading the winter. You see, I live in the northern part of our country and the winters here are really wild. I think the worst thing about winter is the low temperature. Of course, during the winter, the cold wind is another annoying thing. When the winter is coming, I prefer to stay at home and spend most time on surfing the Internet and do my work at home. I dread it as well. Our street department tries real hard to keep the side streets cleared but it's not easy. We live about 3 blocks off a main street in a subdivision so our street might not be cleared for a day or more. We also live on a slight hill which makes it worse. I am concerned this year because I take care of our grandbaby and the drive to their house is about 20 minutes from us on a clear day. I won't be anxious to go out by 6am to babysit but the kids need to get to work. Last year I didn't need to worry about the drive since our daughter didn't work. I have an suv but haven't driven in the snow yet so this could be a real challenging winter.

It sounds like you live in a street or neighborhood very similar to mine. The problem with our subdivision is that they always forget to plow the snow on our streets. The snow is literally piled up really high that if you so much as attempt to drive through our neighborhood, your vehicle will be stuck for some time. I remember last year my brother in law parked his car at the end of their block, and they had so much snowfall that he couldn't even locate it?! That's just insane! Yes I would be concerned if I were you about driving in the snow in those conditions. I hope that you also have snow tires as well. That's so nice that you look after your grand kids. Your kids are really lucky to have a mum like you.

@MrKennedy (1978)
21 Nov 09
Nope, I am not dreading the winter at all. In fact, I'm actually looking forward to it. Our winters here are very, very cold and it's not unusual (though it never happened last year) to be greeted with a spot of snow. For me, the winter gives me a chance to relax and unwind, and reflect upon the year that's drawing to an end. In the winter, there is nothing I love more than hibernating in the warmth of my home and gazing out of my window at the soothing rain and grey skies whilst I take the opportunity to finish some work on the computer, watch a film that I've been meaning to get around to or just generally laze about, all with a steaming mug of tea or hot chocolate in my hand. The best part about it is nobody judges you either, because nobody expects you to venture outside due to the harsh weather conditions. Another reason I love the winter is because of Christmas, and the holidays surrounding it. Being given a few weeks away from work is simply brilliant, and gives me a chance to just chill out and take a breather from a busy year. And then there's Christmas itself, which for me, is undoubtedly the best time of the year. It's great spending Christmas with all the family, gorging myself with all the wonderful food and unwrapping all those amazing gifts, warmed up by the blazing fireplace and watching with the kids at the snow falling and wishing for enough snow to make a snowman. In many ways, for me, winter can be more enjoyable than the summer.

It does sound lovely the way you describe it and I agree it's a beautiful time of year when you're at home relaxing with family or friends, and viewing the snow from inside. And yes there are all kinds of benefits to the snow: like building snowmen, going tobogganing, skiing, etc. You're lucky because it doesn't sound like it affects your commute at all, when you have to drive in it somewhere, it can be hell with all the icy roads or getting stuck in a neighborhood and being unable to move your car. Also it's nice to be able to work from home as well so you can really appreciate winter.

I am not looking forward to snow at all!!! ... I had moved to South Carolina where I stayed for 8yrs. If they saw a snow flake the whole city got shut down because they just are not prepared to handle that type of weather. I recently have moved back to Ohio (lake effect snow) where last yr they started getting snow prior to halloween. So far so good this yr no snow YET . Now my son who is 15 is excited about snow he wants to go sledding, make a snowman and all the fun winter things, but he doesn't have to drive in it. I don't think it matters where you live anymore drivers a terrible everywhere. They are all in their own little worlds not paying attention to their surroundings. I just pray that when it does start its a short season LOL not the usual 6 months from November to May. Time will tell.

You know Vancouver sounds a lot like that. As soon as someone sees a flake, everything shuts down because they're also not prepared for the snow. Very few people have snow tires, there is a lack of those snow blowers on the roads, etc. There are also too many new or inexperienced drivers on the roads too that can't handle driving in the snow. Well, hopefully you might by lucky and not get any snow this year. Ha! We should be so lucky over here...I'm hoping that we might also have minimal snow this year not 4-5 ft of it like we had last year and EVERYTHING shut down. True it makes a big difference if you have to actually drive in the snow, I find it quite scary.
