I almost lost my happy home

My daughter and I were are the pet food store to drop off canned goods for charity and the local animal shelter people were there with two beautiful dogs, they were about 7 months old and it was all I could do to walk away. I know we cannot afford anymore animals, but I wanted them I could just see them on the ranch and what a wonderful life they would have. Good thing my daughter was there and pulled me out to the car before I did anything stupid. Hubby would have called the shelter for the dogs and the insane asylum for me.

Oh, and I thought I'm the only mom who acts that way. We have 3 dogs now. 2 grown chi hua-hua and a baby pit-bull terrier we took home from the shelter. And they all sleep with me. I can't stand it when those cute eyes look at me, I just want to bring them home. My dream is to have a big garden and lots of dogs. lots and lots and lots of them...(LOL)

Thanks for choosing me as best answer Savypat, I appreciate it. I'm just happy to know that there are lots of pet lovers out there. You know...my son always puts his big hands over my eyes whenever we pass by the dog shelter with our car and they are showing some of the dogs for adoption outside and he always says "Don't look Mom..Don't look !" ha ha

I so relate Pat! I can’t go to our local shelter without ending up in tears because I can’t give at least one of the animals a home! The problem is that my husband has threatened to leave if I bring any more animals home considering the fact that we can barely afford to feed the four we have and ourselves! My friend went to the shelter a couple of days ago and was looking at adopting these two beautiful puppies, she wanted me to go with her but I refused because I knew if I saw a kitten or a puppy I would not leave without it and I value my marriage so best for me to stay away! (LOL)

you did well. i think if someone is getting a dog, a shelter is definately the way to go. we recently got a 9 month old pup from the pound and she is amazing. except for the fact that she is a working breed so she has to be walked twice a day (or she pulls the plants out in the garden) but we knew we were in for that when we got her. but yes, pups are very cute and very difficult to resist.

Well that made me laugh. My kids would have wanted those two dogs. They've been lobbying for a dog for two years now.

That is why I can't look at the puppies at the pet store. I did some volunteer work at the Animal shelter in my area and it was very hard to leave and not take one of those very sad looking faces home with me.

AWWW! If I was with you that day, we would've both walked out with the dogs..lol...I am an easy target for pets, too...especially small fury animals that look at you with those sad puppy eyes. I refuse to go to that part of the store that show animals. Too hard for me, especially if they are in cages...Can't stand to see them caged up!

I am often tempted by cute and friendly animals, but I really do not want any more animals, I am trying to lose them by attrition. I will stick to admiring other kitties when they are visiting.

I can relate... I regularly check the website of a rescue organization that's not too terribly far from me and I don't know why I do -- I'm not in a position to get a dog right now and I see their stories and it breaks my heart. Today, too, my older daughter (she's 19) was in the pet shop to get something for her fish. They had a mini dachshund puppy apparently (which is a breed I very much want to have) and they sat her down and put the puppy right in her lap!! It licked her face and the whole deal so she HAD to come home and tell me. Fortunately, she didn't know the price they were asking so I didn't have to rationalize it away LOL I had half a mind to get in my car and go see though!

Wow! You're lucky I wasn't there, I would have been convincing you :P I'm exactly like you, I see an animal from a shelter/on the street and not getting them is the HARDEST thing to do for me. Of course, when I see an animal on the street I always try to get it, even if I couldn't keep it I could try to find the owners and if that failed, find it a new home. But my dad is like your husband, he would have been very upset if I (or my mom) ever came home with another dog (especially 2!)

Isn't it awful when you can't do things like that? I wish you could have, but have you seen the price of dog food?! It's still cheap when compared to human food but last year my dogs' favorite biscuits (Kroger brand, they won't touch Meaty Bone!) were $1.69 and often went on sale for $1. Now they are $2.89!! I hope the dogs get a good home.

It's hard not to want to take in animals when they are so cute and in need of a home. Though you wish you could take them home, I am sure they'll find a home of their own! Until then, you could always visit them (with your daughter or husband) at the shelter!

You have so many pet animals. I don't think you need more. It will be misuse of money.

Awww, I've had that same problem in the past. Have you ever read Edgar Sawtelle? It is about a "dog farm." Such interesting things I learned reading that. Karen

I would probably react the same way. It's a strong feeling, to want to help out animals who don't have anyone to care for them the way a loving family would. But you're right - if you can't take care of or afford the animal, then it's not helping the dog - or you! It's sad, but I like to think someone else adopted them, because every animal deserves a loving family and a safe home. [I know it's not always like that - don't squish my dreams though! Haha]

Hi, Pat! They're so cute, I usually want every one I see! I know what you're feeling, and I congratulate you on your self-control, even if it did need a little help!
