Whose job is it to censor TV for children?

I believe that it is the parents responsibility to some extent, and also the networks. When I was a kid in the early 90's cartoons like carebears, smurfs, and Strawberry Shortcake were all the rage. They were simple and clean programs with very little fighting, crudeness, or bad behavior. There were usually one character who had a problem and always learned a lesson. These days it seems that even cartoons on TV are in need of censorship! Not to mention all of the innuendo, drugs, alcohol, swearing, violence, and so much more in every other program and commercial. Do you think that TV should be censored, and to what degree? Why or why not?

I am not a fan of censor ship..I believe that's what remote controls are for. It's up to my husband and I to determine what our kids watch and don't watch. We do our best to keep things age appropriate. We have always made sure we communicated with the parents of the kids ours hang out with and made them aware if there was somehing we really didn't want our kids to see. Having said that I am also of the belief that no tv show, music, or movie, or magazine is going to have more influence on our children than we do.

no it shouldn't. i'm a grown up and i should be able to choose what i want to watch and when i watch it. people who have kids should control what their kids see but i shouldn't be allowed to affect what adults can see

it's the parents responsibility, ultimately. you should know what your kids are doing or watching, and change/lock the program out if offensive.although i know parents that let their kids watch south park-and that is totally NOT a kid's show.they should be in bed at 10 pm anyway. same with the net-i would never leave a child unattended. if i had kids, they'd hate me,because i wouldn't allow them to use it unless i were there.

Here in our country there is a government agency that censored TV shows most especially those shows for kids to ensure that it will not affect kids behavior. I agree that parents is the sole responsibility to their children. But parents not always guard their kids in front of TV. So, there's really need TV censorship not allowing show that is harm for children...

i think the censorship is needed, in my country there is an institution that do this job. So before any program show on the television, they classified every program that suitable for adult, teenager and children and they separate the time of the classified program into three section time for example the adult program is in the night or start from 10 PM. Every program should be a concern for parent. But it would be better if parent, whether dad or mom always accompanied their children when watching TV. Tell him/her that good or not good of every aspect in the show. By giving more knowledge to the children, it will prevent the bad effect from the TV in the future.

I don't believe the networks should have to censor anything. The obvious stuff, YES. But they do what they do to entertain all age groups. When you have a child who should only be watching things that are family content, or something, then it's totally the parents discretion how they want to censor that content. You can never stop the networks from airing things, you can't force a program to change the way it's being created. You just have to use your own brain and censor what needs to be censored.

I used to be of the mind that tv should be censored to some degree. It's hard to know what should be right to do about it. On the one hand, who decides what is appropriate for people to see? The government?!? I hope not! At what age is it okay to see it? Some of the ratings on tv right now I don't agree with. A lot of programs rated as TV-14 are very risque'. I don't even watch it and wouldn't want my 16 year old watching it either but we have a rating system developed by the government that says it's okay for her and our 14 year old to watch it. I don't think so! On the other hand, if people who are watching this junk on TV stop watching it, hollyweird (LOL) might take the hint and start to clean up its act. If tv is censored, good stuff like religious programming might get lumped in with the Simpsons and South Park because it may offend some people. All in all, I think that we as parents need to keep firm grip on the remote control. Or better yet turn the TV off! Sincerely in Christ, Leesa C. Eph.2:8,9

we have a similar system here in australia to that in the UK that programs unsuitable for all ages are shown later. i think if something is terribly offensive that it is the job of the boradcaster not to let it air. in terms of what children see, the parents need to be supervising their kids and ensuring that they arent watching something inappropriate or damaging to their innocence, naivety, confidence or self-esteem.

I think cesoring TV programs is primarily the job of parents, but TV networks and the society at large also has an obligation to make and choose appropriate programs for children. As a society, people have responsibility over others who belong in the same society. We should ensure that children grow up as good and responsible adults.

I think it should be up to the parents to decide what programs are right for their children to watch and which ones are not. I do not agree that TV should be censored at all. The networks could help by making sure that they do not should the violent shows before 9:00pm at night.

As a parent i am very much concerned with what program should my kids watch on tv. i miss all the children shows during my time because they were all simple and educational at the same time. nowadays cartoons are all violent which could influence the behavior of the children watching it. but since they can't avoid watching it, we as a parent should take charge in guiding them. i agree with you that there should be more censorship on tv.

According to me it is resposible to the parents who care thier children and take censorship to aviod thier children from watching such a vulnerable or crude provoking programs rather blaming other people and demanding is wast of the time in this commercial world as shwoing even belly of the women turned as commercial.

T.V can only censor so much. The rest is up to the parents. Parents know what they want their kids to watch and what they want to influence them not the networks.

Of course, the right thing to do is to have the TV media have censorship on what is seen and televised. However, we know that's not going to happen so unfortunately it has to be left up to the parents. But now the big question is: do you stop your child to watching TV all together, when all their other friends are watching these same programs, and protect them from life all together? It is a tuff call, and I just thank God that I no longer have to censor what my son watches.

Unfortunately, it is left to us parents to censor what our kids watch. But, I am not with them all of the time. Sometimes, I hear my 9 year old talking with his friends about the latest thing that Peter Griffin did. I keep telling him that this is not a kid show. Just because it is animated it doesn't mean that it is for kid. So, I take on that job. To censor what my kids watch. No matter how poorly I am at it.

I believe its the parents responsiblity due to the networks not knowing who is watching or what to have the kids watch besides if have the networks control what our kids watch then it's like taking freedom away. I don't think that would be fair for the next generation. Some shows should be censored these days the cartoons are worse then when wille Coyote and road runner are. Those are little compared to south park and others that are just nothing but blood and violence. Spongebob is a better show then south park. If they can ban looney toons why are they letting all these other stupid blood violent cartoons pass. Makes you wonder if it was just a publicity stunt to get simpathy or something.

i don't think so that these programs should be censored coz its the 21st century going on and in today's life a child studies less from books but learns more from cartoons and movies and these generation and not intented to do so watching the cartoons its not only the part of cartoons but they have many alernative sources to know about all such things so these children's are actually smart and a step ahead from our thinking.

I definitely think its the parents responsibility. Just because one persn complains about tedgy thing on TV doesn't mean that everyone should be subjected to censorship.
