Children And Their Understanding....

Justice and his Snowflake - Justice and his Snowflake that he hung on the door knob

Tonight we made paper snowflakes. After we made them I told my 3 year old son that we would hang them in the windows. He grabbed the one closest to him and took off in the livingroom, when I walking in the livingroom, he said, "Look Mommy". He had hung the snowflake on the door knob. He was so proud of himself that I just had to take a picture of him with his snowflake. It is so funny how children understand you, but they don't fully understand you. Do you have a story similar to this one? Do your children understand you, but they don't fully understand you?

That picture is SO cute! Your son certainly does look proud of his handiwork! We had a funny incident with my grandson, who is also 3, a couple of months ago. My husband was having some dental issues and he said, "My tooth is killing me." Justin's eyes got so big and he said, "Don't let it kill you Pop! Call the police man!" I couldn't help myself...I was laughing too hard to explain it to him so Pop Pop had to.

That is so hilarious! It reminded me of something else my son said the other day. It was Wednesday night and I was driving through town, we drove by Kentucky Fried Chicken and he said, "I want hot potatoes" (he calls mashed potatoes, hot potatoes). I told said, "No, Mommy doesn't have any money". Later on that night, a friend came to visit and asked him, "Are you going to have mashed potatoes tomorrow for Thanksgiving?", he replied, "No, mommy don't got no money". We laughed and laughed all night about it!

LOL Yeah. When my sister and I were little, and our old jeans got holes in them, we'd wear them as cut off shorts. Well, one birthday someone gave my sister a new pair of jeans, and someone else gave her a pair of scissors as another gift, and I think you can imagine what happened next. "Look Mom, cut-off's!" LOL AARRGGHH kids! Eh? LOL

I remember my grandmother asking if I had to go potty since we were about to leave on a trip, and I said, "No." Then she asked if I was sure. I had no idea what that meant, but I remember the mental process I went through, remembering when people answered "Yes," and then when asked if they were sure, they would almost always say "Yes" again. So I said, "No," since that was the answer I gave to the original question. So she repeated the questions, with the same result, and I couldn't understand why she was asking the same questions. Finally I communicated to my grandparents and my mother that I did not understand what being "sure" meant. I don't remember the exact words after that point, but I did question why ask if one is sure if someone already answered the original question; if I didn't know whether I needed to use the bathroom I would think I would have said so. Come to think of it, I was a late bedwetter, with an early phobia of defecation. The stretching back there was very painful to me.

Oh, I know it. They do grow up fast. Honestly, it doesn't seem like they should already be 8 and 3. Time really does fly.

Working with children, and doing my practicum this semester, I've had a lot of moments like this. I think sometimes littles ears have selective hearing.
