Elder care--what is it like where you live? How does society care for the old?

I know what the basic western model of Nursing Home care is like. I have worked in nursing homes. Some things vary from state to state. Where I live I am a Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medication Aide, Social Services Designee, and Activities Director.( all of this cost less than $1000 to achieve, and a total time of less than four months) I do not feel like this is necessarily my passion or my calling.I can do it, and do it quite well. My husband loves this work. I just want to know what your experience is. I have taken classes with people from Kenya, and Nigeria, and Tanzania, and have heard their opinions. I would like to hear yours.

Like you, I have taken the Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medication Aide, and Rehabilitation Aide. I also enjoy doing this where I live. I have worked in several nursing homes. I have been involved with resident's that have been diagnosed with Probable Alzheimer's Dementia and also other dementia's. I feel that this gives me a chance to be a positive influence in the lives of these people, and they all seem to enjoy the fact that I'm there for them.

Living Room - This is a common room for the residents in a local nursing home. It has a nice television, comfortable furniture, attractive drapes. There is a stereo system, and books and gadgets to keep various residents happy and at ease. it is a good area to visit with family.
Nursing homes in my area no longer look so "institutional". I am adding a pictue of one of the commons areas in a local home.

Right you are. This picture does not look like an institutional picture. Thank you.
