Would you feel comfortable if someone uses your real name in posts?

Hi friends! I understand that log in names are used for two purposes, the first reason is to conceal one’s real identity and second one is that some names are common, therefore, logging in with similar names could be a problem and may not be feasible. There may be other reasons also for using screen names, which might not be known to me. I am here for pretty long time and I know the real names of many dear friends, however, I feel hesitant to use their real names in the discussions presuming that they may not like to reveal their actual names to everyone here on myLot. I respect their privacy and abide by that. I do not mind if any of my friends here uses my real name in the discussions. In fact, I loved to be addressed by my real name. Do you appreciate if a friend/member on myLot uses your actual name in his/her discussion or do you feel otherwise and you don’t feel comfortable if your actual name is used? Your honest opinions would be helpful for me and would serve as a future guide for me. Thanks in advance.

hello deepak! on my part, i prefer to use my username in the discussions...i don't know but i am not really comfortable to see my real name appearing here... maybe i am just used to using my screen name and besides i have said so many things about me here...haha there's someone here who uses my real name in her comment on me, and honestly, i don't like it. my name is not a common one and it will be easy for those who knew me to recognize that it was really me... i just told her politely not to use it again. but i don't mind addressing me on my real name on PM's. haha just like you i like my friends calling me on my real name for its like music to my ears... have a good day my friend deepak!

Hi cky! I know about your preference of using your log in name in your discussions and you do not feel like revealing your real name to everyone here (except your close friends). You may remind that mylotter that s/he should avoid using your real name, as you feel uncomfortable in that situation. Thanks for clarifying that your real name could be used in PMs etc. I've taken note of it.......lol! Deepak

Hi dpk, I like typing dpk instead of Deepak when answering your post. I have been typing the former one for quite some time, I come to know the latter after quite some time I wonder whether its your real name. Since you don’t mind your friends to call either your real name or user name, so I’m happy to keep on calling you dpk. Moreover I prefer to type only 3 letters. Really lazy eh... I prefer my friends here calling my user name. I know my simple and short nickname using here is easy for friends to remember. What’s more Chinese name is rather difficult for people who have different culture to remember as well. Moreover from the name people calling me, I can know very well whether he or she is online or offline friend Have a nice day and happy posting

Hi lkbooi! You are free to type either 'dpk' or 'Deepak', both are acceptable to me and I am comfortable in both the position. There is no need to wonder because 'Deepak' is my real name and many of my friends use it while responding/posting their comments to my posts. I can understand that typing only dpk is easier because you need to type only three letters and sometimes laziness takes over you.. I won't mind you typing dpk only. I agree with you that chinese names could be difficult to remember. I have noted your choice and I would continue to address you with your log in name to make you feel at ease. Thanks for sharing and enriching the post. Deepak

Don’t worry dear, in your language that word means ‘beautiful’ isn’t it, so nobody can blame you or you need not feel guilty. Regarding my name ‘sree’ is the most beautiful name in our place which means prosperity. You can find here all the ‘God’s’ and Goddess’ names start with ‘sree’.

Hi deepak, I have given my real name as user name here so there is no question of any dislike for calling my name. But I agree with your views, I also felt the same many times and even typed the real name then I erased the same and added the user name by thinking that whether they like it or not. I hope your discussion will help to get an idea about your friend’s wish and you can call them accordingly in future.

Hi Sree! You got it absolutely right that my discussion will help me identify those friends, who only wish to be addressed by their log in names. I know the choice of my dear friends, however, sometimes, there may be some gray areas, therefore, I wish to be more careful so as not to invade someone's privacy. About you I know that your real name is as good as your log in name........lol! Thanks for sharing and joining us.

Yeah Sree, almost all of my offline friends like calling my real name. a few of them do call me the nickname given to me! It’s really fun eh..... Oh goodness! It didn't occur to me totally such word is related to "horror" and name of "ghost" Sounds that it’s really bad to name someone “neeli” Yeah, me too. I should, and I would like to thank dpk as well for giving me the chance to learn an unforgettable Indian word here! This also teaches me a lesson not to abbreviate others name without much consideration. Sree, this does recall me the name "crime" . I hope "sree" doesn't carry any undesirable meaning in your language.

Hi mysdiana! I was anxiously waiting for you or say your response. I know that your log in name contains your real name and many who are close to you can decipher it. Like you I feel uncomfortable and ill at ease if someone addresses me with distorted name, instead of using my abbreviation i.e. my screen name or my real name. Thanks a lot for enriching the post. Hi Deepak. I let others know it is fine to use my name by typing it at the end of most of my discussions and comments. But I understand that not everyone is, so if someone has left only their sign-on name in a discussion, I repect that. Others, like, me, regardless of their screen name, do sign a comment with their real name. This lets me know it is okay to use it. That is what I use as my own guide :) Karen

Hi Karen! Without any iota of doubt I can vouch for you and say that you are a gem of a person and I feel very glad when I see you using your real name in your posts/commetns. One user in this discussion has said that good friends here should have liberty to use each other's real name in the posts and I agree to his view. You are right, those who feel uncomfortable, we should respect their privacy. Thanks for joining and sharing your opinion. Have a great day! Deepak

Absolutely! I think, all my friends take my name here and I like that. I also do that if there is no inhibition from the other side. It feels very good to address someone by his/her real name. However, I would respect somebody who would not like to be called by the real name. I should not be judgmental and appreciate others not using their real names or not using their real photos. I feel they are being wise for some have told me that they have had bad experience on internet. It's better to be safe than sorry. It works always.

Hi Mimpi! I know that you loved to be addressed by your real name, specially when it is a call from close friends here. When you get to interact with friends regularly, you get to know many things about them, including their real names and other details either inadvertently or consciously. I also respect others' privacy and if they feel like, I address them by their user name only. Thanks so much for sharing your views and enriching the post.

I hate, hate my real name. That's why I use Sarah Ruth Beth here. It is thr nane I wish I was born with. The few friends that know my real name respect that I hate my real name so they don't use it. My best friend said he likes my real name but understands why I don't use it even wuth him. I would delete a friend who used my real name. The only reason I would have told him my real name is beause I thought I could trust them not to reveal it.So if they Did use it, that means I trust them anymorte .And without trust, there is no True friendship so I would delete them from my friends list." What's i a name?" Plenty!

Hi Sara! I believe that there is nothing to hate, as far as name is concerned. Nonetheless if you are comfortable with sarah ruth beth, your friends should respect your sentiments and privacy and should not displease you. I think you expressed similar views in one of another discussion. Though I do not know your real name, however, if I come to know about it and suppose I happen to write it inadvertently, please don't delete me for this offence from your list of friends. Thanks for expressing your wonderful thoughts and enriching the post. Have a great day! Deepak

I am not comfortable of disclosing my real name online. It is not that my real name is ugly, no actually my real name sounds sweet . I just like to be called in my username and in virtual words my identity is hidden so anyone will know me as Grecychunny. I can say my real name with my friends, actually some of my friends here in Mylot knows my real name but they never use it to comment on my response to their discussion. It means they respect me. Online different from offline so I like my name to be hidden.

This is a great topic for discussion, dpk.Several members here also know my real name, and I would not have a problem if they used it in a discussion. I, like you am proud of my name. In fact, I do use it quite a bit on several sites that I frequent(if for no other reason than that I am terribly forgetful)! I believe that there is no reason to hide your identity from friends unless you are bent on making mischief.

I certainly do; that is why I use my real name as a user name! My first and second names are on other sites anyway and I don’t have a problem if people know it, I would rather keep my email address private though. I have friends here who I refer to with their user names but on other sites or privately I will of course use their real names. I don’t have a problem with my name and I have no desire to conceal who I am and I respect other’s feelings on the matter.

I won't mind if it's something good said about me. But if it's destroying my reputation and making other people think ill of me, that would be another story. So far, I haven't done anything that would make my image look bad especially here in the net. So I presume that anybody who would try to destroy my well-taken cared of name would be soooo lying...Not just in the web but also in real life. I want to be good to each and every person I meet because it makes them feel special and loved. As John Lennon said, Make Love not War...lol...happy mylotting!

I would not feel comfortable if someone used my real name. My friends who know my name will not respect that at all, lol. I have a username but some of my friends will just call me by my first name, which doesn't make sense, because the whole point of my name on the website is so my real name wouldn't be used. . . This doesn't only happen on the internet, but it happened in real life in school. If I said that I didn't want my name given to another student I didn't know, then my friend will still reveal it if that person asked. But anyway, while online, I don't like it when I am called by my real name, especially by full name, because then I wouldn't like it having everyone knowing who I am. It is a scary thought. . .

Somehow I keep using the username [your user name is like mine and speaks for itself]but in the case of friends , I also use the real name say for example I used to write Rajib for krajibg. He used to sign wIth his original name.Similarly if it is my friend I would tend to use the original name unless I am so used to the user name thAT I would call the friend herself by the user name[if you see my point-eg I call mimpi as mimpi.I associate her with this name.

Hi Kala! I can understand your point of view that if we get used to calling a friend by her/his screen name, we continue to do that and don't think twice, while using it. I also address her as Mimpi most of the time, as it is her real name. You are right that yours and my log in name speak for itself and most of our friends here know our real names and address us by it. I love being addressed by my actual name. Yeah, the reason for starting the discussion was that I should get a better idea about my friends, who do not want me to use their actual name in posts, despite me knowing it and now I have got a clearer idea. Thanks for sharing and enriching the post. dpk PS - How're the preparation going on, D'day is drawing very near. Hope you have tied up every thing. All the best.

Hello, Deepak. I use my real name and year of birth as my username and my picture in my avatar, as I want people to know who they are dealing with. I don't give out any other personal information, such as my surname, but I'm very conscious that people pretend to be something they're not on the internet and I wouldn't be happy if people thought I was hiding things about myself. Anyone who comes to my discussions knows they're dealing with a 57 year old, slightly mad female - okay a very mad female! As far as friends and other posters go, if I see their real name in posts, I'll use it, otherwise I address them by their username even if I know their real name. I always open my posts with a 'hello,' followed by real name or username. After all, if you met someone in the street, you'd say hello, you wouldn't just start talking, so why should it be different on MyLot?
