Is happiness a choice or not?

I often believe that its a choice. We can never have a perfect life all the time but we can learn to be happy after all those hard lessons of life. But I am doubtful about how could a child choices to be happy if he is starving, beaten and left to die? What could possibly make him happy in a terrible life he's been to?

I fully believe it is a choice..you are only as happy as you let yourself be or want yourself to be. Life is always going to have its bumps but if you handle it the best that you can and not allow it to bring you down you can still have happiness. you should always appreciate the small things that make you happy and try not to sweat the big stuff as much...

good point, but I'm still wondering what happiness would a child can have if all he/she has is to endure the pain and suffering. Will I have to guts to ask him/her if he/she is happy with his/her life? I don't think he/she will say "I'm happy because I choice to be one!"

I don't know what type of problems this child is or has endure but there is always some positive in every ones life andif this child is so hurt that all he or she can focus on his the negatives then someone who knows his or her positives needs to focus on making him or her see those positives and let or allow him or her to see how happy they can be.

hmm it's a very tough question. In order to get happiness, we have to go through misery on the first place. There's something that we forget. Sometimes, we go through alot of misery compared to others and we appreciate things more. The starving child is unhappy because of his stomachache but will have hapinness when someone will donate food. When it comes to a child being beaten and left to die, it reminds me of a case that hapenned in Japan in the 80s. Her name was Junko Furuta and she has been tortured by her classmates for a year. They did alot of horrible things to her and I won't mention it here. You can find information on wikipedia. She begged them to finish her off instead. I think that if they killed her, she will find happiness because she won't have to suffer anymore. I don't know if i chose the right words to explain. Happinness is not something we can choose but it happens through situations.

what a sad story. begging to end your life just to ease up the suffering. damn, surely that is not a happy ending.

Some people have the ability to make lemonaides out lemons, while others really don't have any problems or few problems and yet they choose to be sad. I know someone who really has not had a bad life at all in comparison to most people but she always chose to be sad, eventually she lost her husband because he could not take the constant depression and just wanted to be happy. She made him feel guilty every day of his life by crying every day over very little. She is now divorced but still her life is not bad other than living alone. She has friends and children, and grandchildren, but finds no happiness in any of it. That is sad because she chooses to be sad.

only when hes grown can he make a difference for himself. anyone that knows of this kind of treatment should do something and if they dont they are not a good person. some have lived through very bad treatment and put the past behind them and made a happy life when grown. anyone that uses it for an excuse to be bad to others are also wrong.
