3 times, once in my late 20's, once in my early 40's and this last spring I've had high cholesterol, and I've gotten it down with diet each time - this last time I've even lost a few pounds!
First time was when I learned I was allergic to red meat and cut it down to no more than 3 times a week. The second time I figured I had been eating too many eggs, cut them out and down it went.
This last time I went on this diet that included drastic increase in my fruit and veggie intake and way down on my protein and carb intake and down it went.
So, is it so high and for so long that your doctor didn't want you to try changing your diet first?

okay - increase your veggie intake - things like broccoli, cauliflower, green ones to 4 cups raw or 2 cups cooked daily - starchy vegges less - they count more as carbs
eat less meat - even lean meats - to about 6-8 oz a day, you can replace one "oz" of meat with a no sugar added yogert 6-8 oz or an egg counts as an oz - if you eat tofu - you can have a cup...
eat 3 fresh fruits a day

I learned a natural way to diminish the bad cholesterol - I was listening to some very interesting information how one top athlete had managed to get his medals and won in long distance skiing.
He is on his way to the Olympic Games now and has managed to train a lot.
He had not the right cholesterol balance earlier, but then he added some good fats to his diet together with other food supplements and that made it all change to the better so the good cholesterol is higher and the bad is lower.
The food supplements are from a fifty year company and has helped me too a lot. I take good oils called Tre-En-En and Wheat Germ Oil and Salmon Oil.
The asthma I had is almost gone and so are the aces and pains. Omega3 in Salmon Oil helps me feel happier and makes my memory and creativity to function better.

Yes, it is important to be aware of that the good oils also make the blood thinner. If we take medication to do that too, it could be too much.
If the doctor has not forbidden you to eat fish, maybe you could take one capsule of the fish oil a day, but it is always better ask him or her first.
Personally I try to avoid pharmacy medicines and try to keep to natural food supplements but if I would be taking medication, I would - with the help of the doctor - diminish the medicine and slowly go over to natural food supplements.
I would let the doctor keep doing blood tests until I knew I could manage without medication.
I am not sure all doctors are cooperative doing this - but there are some who would - like the scientists who teach doctors, are experts in nutrition and work with GNLD and Stanford University. You maybe already read about this group on the site I gave you.
Anyway, it is entirely up to you what you decide to do in this case.. Wish you better health..

No, my levels are good. It's a question of diet Lakota. High cholesterol can lead to clogging of arteries and heart disease. I think you're supposed to eat less of certain foods like eggs and some dairy products.
Here is a site that will maybe answer your questions:

My doctor didn't even check mine he just put me on a med about a year ago. it is called simvastatin. I personally thought that a little strange but w/all my other problems he said he was sure mine was high. It may show up when he does bloodwork, i don't know. I have had no side affects that i know of.

Yes, I was just recently diagnosed with cholesterol and put on Zettia. I have been on it about a month and committed to being on it for three and then see what the results would be. I hate being on anything and doubt the meds are going to do any good as I am not changing my eating habits or anything. Winter is not a good time for me to be eating healthier.

Hello Lakota. My Dr tells me I have high cholestrol and put me on simvastatin. I didn't have any side affects. But since I'm taking other med for my arthritic I decided to try controlling it with diet. Dr Oz had suggested eating at least one avocado a week (I have two)along with crushed Flaxseed and Walnuts and almonds. We'ill see if it works bacause I go in for a check up aright after Christmas.

Hi Lakota! I have been diagnosed with high blood pressure and
high cholesterol for over 15 years now and have been on
medication for both! I take Lipitor and have had no side effects
at all! I do have to go have a blood test every four months or
so to check on my Liver Values and never had a problem in all
the years that I have been on it! My cholesterol has been under
control too! I do watch my diet and watch my salt/sodium intake
as much as possible, but don't drive myself crazy over it! And
the same with my blood pressure! I am also on 2 meds for that
too and it has also been under control for quite some time now.

about a 100 years ago now--I was put on Lipitor for high cholesterol and it made me very sick.
they took me off it and put me on zocor that they told me I did not have to take anymore cuz my level was good.
lo and behold, I had two heart attacks in may of this year and still my level of cholesterol is low---
i do take Lipitor at night with no ill effects.
Nobody really knows why I had the two heart attacks unless it was from smoking, stress or a multitude of other life long problems.
more than likely, hereidtary.
