I never did this when I had my horse!

What I never did was let him run out og grain(after he had to be on senior feed)! I always bought him a month's supply! If he ran low I would go and get some right away! I bring this up because there is a woman at the stable I work at that never stocks up on her horses's grain! She won't get any until her horses are completely out! I don't get it! If you want horses take care of them or don't have horses! Period!

I remember when I had to board my horses for a while we would have people do the exact same thing by letting their horses run out of feed. Their excuse was alway they did not want to keep too much at the barn because other people would think that since there was so much there that she wouldn't mind if they used just a little. I personally think the woman was slightly off her rocker because she would always end up borrowing from me and never offered to repay what she had used. But as it goes I guess it is not the worst thing that could happen to the horse if he goes a night without grain rations. I know my horses often refuse to come to the barn for their grain. I figure that if they have plenty of grass or hay then they will survive without the grain. They do it in the wild all of the time. It just makes us feel better about giving them that grain ration.

This horse has run out of her grain and the gelding is almost out! Until the mare's owner gets her grain the mare will be eating oats until then! The mare is pregnant and due in April! I am concerned about her! With hay the horses never run out! There is always plenty of eat for all the horses year round!

Unless the mare starts losing weight there should be no real concern, if someone at the stable is supplementing with oats. When we had broodmares we had one that the only thing we could feed her was oats when she was in foal becuase she would not eat the broodmare pellets and could not have the molasses in sweet feed. Vets told us that as long as she did not lose weight and her coat still looked good to let her have just the oats. But you are 100% right about if she has the horses then she needs to take care of them. Letting them run out of feed for more than a feeding is completely uncalled for especially if she does it on a regular basis.

we may run out of hard feed, like their pollard or mix but not chaff or hay. they have to have something cause there's nothing in their paddock. i was lazy last night and only fed, my lot hay. then i had to give my bro's g.f. horse a bit of chaff not that she does anything with him. annoying in my view she does nothing with him and yet feeds him. my mare is the only one in work, but we need to keep weight on them. then my bro's g.f. said something about me not doing anything with them, when i had been out early that morning. mum said she felt like making a comment that she does nothing with her horse.

I agree and that goes for any animal or pets. You have to take care fo them if you want them to be happy and live a long and good life. You should not own animals and pets if you are not going to treat them well and feed them good.

well, I never owned a horse, but the stable I rode at had a whole barn full of grain and hay, it was just for storage, the cats hung out there most of the time until winter when they came down to the horse barns for the warmth. I never saw a problem with grain and hay, I don't think the owners would've done anything like that, since they were both horse lovers.

Back when i had horses i always made sure that there was food enough on stock, Hay, Grain and Carrots, always. Aswell as there was several paddocks i could switch between so the grass could get some peace and grow up fresh again.
