I need your opinion or rather your say about my question "Why there shouldn't be an additional year (College has 4 years, an additional year would mean 5 years) in College? This is for the upcoming debate that I am joining next week and I would like to hear your opinions and says about this topic. Why there shouldn't be one? For me, I am fine having another year in College, as long as they remove the minor subjects and treat the last year to be like a 1 year practicum as practice to professionalism. And at the same time, I want to side in my question, another year would mean another set of payment. Not all students are rich that they can pay for their tuition fee. Some study because of the scholarship which is given to them, which is fine, but still, not all students are given scholarship. A lot has happened in the Philippines, other students quit school because of the tuition is increasing its price and that it is hard to pay already. There are still other expenses to pay, not only education but other necessities. My mind is mixed up with pros and cons, and I would really appreciate if you could say your side so that I can think how am I going to say it to that day. Thank you for reading and I hope I can hear from your side.

i think in some cases it may depend on your major, some do require more than 4 years. my cousin's a lawyer and i think he went at least 8 minimum. but yea,in some learning an extra year would probably not be a bad thing.

hi taki, i finished my college 4 years only, oh thats a long time ago... the reason why they add another year to college is because the "quality" of education is low.. thats why i believe...

One of the things that I could recall about being part of the debate is that you should be neutral. That way, you won't have a hard time which ever side you might get designated to. With all the points that your oppositions gives out, you try to denounce it by seeking out that point's flaw. Well, additional expenses is indeed a convincing reason why an additional year shouldn't be imposed in education, in this case college. However, there are college students who do study in five years. Some courses take four years to finish while others have five. With that in mind, four year courses would turn out to be five year courses and five year courses would become six year courses. Then, if you end up deviating, you might consider secondary education as one that should get the additional year but, the same arguement would come up when it comes to expenses. Individuals involved would then be associated as reasons for the additional year perhaps. The competence of either the teachers when it comes to their teaching or the students capability to study. Yet, if a student has a scholarship, doesn't that mean that they have more advantage when it comes to academic achievement, making them privileged to finish faster in their studies? However, why is there a need to add an additional year? To be competent or viable for the working field? Necessitate what is needed but, minimize the burden. As you had mentioned, a year to fully fine tune the profession that one is aiming within the course that the students are taking.

HI taki_takaishi I study industrial engineering and my pensum is of 5 years. But i understand what you are talking about, it would be troublesome for some carreers to have an additional year. Although i dont have any problem with the money as my university is free.

It depends on the country. On my home country it's normal to make a 5 years degree. In many other countries they're always 4 years, and I was really surprised when I heard that. I guess it depends on the educational system in the country and how do they focus the learning at college. They might decide you need longer or shorter time to learn enough to be prepared to work.

If this is for a debate, you can argue that some professions (such as architecture) DO require a fifth year in college. Doctors and lawyers also require many additional years of education.

This is actually a little bit of an issue for the universities and colleges here in California, US, because there has been so much cut backs on the number of teachers, and the salaries of teachers, and the tuitions have increased as well. I do not think that students should have to go an extra year because this is a competitive year and people also need to realize that many go onto to get a masters degree. An extra year no matter what you do will set you behind

hi taki_takaishi! its true that money will be the big issue here. you know very well that studying for four years is already a big problem for parents especially on this time of crisis, what more if you they add another. there are students who started going to college but unable to finish due to financial difficulties. some selfish schools who kept on increasing their tuition fees even reason out that if parents cant afford to bring their kids on their school, look for an affordable one. this only shows how they are after for the money. other students prefer to have that leverage education. computer course for example. eventhough they took only a 2year or short term course, they were able to land a good high paying job. that's because they work more on hands on laboratory. for me, they should not focus on the # of years but the quality of education. have you ever had an instructor who hates computer because he/she doesn't know how to use one? this is only an example of teachers who dont want any education upgrade. and sad to say, there's many of them. contented with what they learned from their previous teachers.

hi.. i'm from the Philippines too and I already finish my studies.. that was a proposal ever since and I, for one is not in favor because if you apply in a company or institution, some would require actual experience and they usually don't credit practicums.. Another reason is what you have mentioned here.. not all students can afford to pay their tuition fees.. If the government wants students to be equipped with quality education, then they should focus on the school curriculum and the methods by which teachers teach.. Because I do believe that adding another year in college won't guarantee that teachers methods of teaching will be changed or improved.. The problem in our country is that, during evaluation for teachers, we are not that objective in criticizing the teachers, we become very subjective that when evaluation comes, we try to lift up or fail teachers who have done something in us.. for heads also, they usually rate according to their relationship to the teacher.. Adding another year in college is big burden not only to students but to parents as well..one more thing is that, the government should focus on the grade school and high school years of students because it is the most critical part of schooling where children start to accumulate knowledge and information. So that by the time they go to college, they are already prepared to face a higher level of learning.. If we look around and examine things, there are those in high school already but they still don't know how to read and how to comprehend.. that's why when they step to college, they are hard up in adjusting and in accumulating the knowledge being imparted to them.. had these students been prepared during their elementary and high school years, they shouldn't be experiencing this kind of difficulties in college because they have already expected that college years will be more comprehensive and requires higher maturity..

It is in my opinion, sorry for the term, is actually a stupid question. There is nothing to debate about. In reality, there are courses offered for four years and some for 5 years, thus defeats the point of the argument. The reason for that is some courses could be completed in 5 years and others in four years on the basis of difficulty or complexity. For example, social sciences is only for four years, engineering curses for five years since more education is needed for that courses. Moreover, there are also persons who do not pass in certain subjects, and thus they would have to extend for one year or even more. SO extension due to failure solves the problems.

Hi. I graduated accountancy from PUP in 2001. When I enrolled there in 1997, I was given the choice to enroll in a five-year or four-year course. I personally chose to take up my course for four years. My reasons? I wanted to graduate the earliest possible time. Another school year would mean additional costs and expenses. I wouldn't choose the five-year course even if the reason is for practicum or on-the-job-training purposes. Practical experiences are best acquired while working. Let's put it into two (2) choices. CHOICE #1: You finished college within four years. Then after that, you applied and accepted for an actual work after graduation. You stayed with the company for 1 year and decided to look for other opportunities capitalizing on your 1 year work experience. CHOICE #2: You finished college within five years. But you spent the fifth year for your practicum or on-the-job-training. After graduation, you applied for a job capitalizing on your practicum/on-the-job-training. Between the two choices, I personally believe that Choice #1 would give you better results - position and financial wise.

Upon this question, there are many conditions should be considered. I don't know what country you are living, different country has different reasons.I'm a Chinese and living in China now, so my opinions would base on Chinese conditions. First China is a country of a large population. The living standard is not very high and people's income are very low. It's diffcult to afford for the fee of college for most families. So it's untealistic in China.
