My house which needed a coat of paint badly is now being painted since the last one week.It will take another fifteen days to complete it. I had to do this though knowing fully well that my building is likely to be demolished in another four to five years as developers will take over it and after demolishing it build a new tower highrise where all of us tenants will be accommodated in new spacious apartments. My apartment was falling apart due to damage due to water leakages so i had to first get it repaired and then paint it to hide the scars. I had no option but to carry out this work. All this will be in vain when the building will be demolished. Its a catch 22 situation but i had no choice.Have you found youself in this situation? Please share.

Knowing me as well as I do I would probably just do some patch work and call it good if I knew it was going to be demolished soon. I have always rented just because of things like this. I knew early on I was never going to be able to afford the type of home I wanted (I have shared several with husbands but always ended up leaving them behind to get of of a bad situation.) and the upkeep would be more than I could afford. So I never bought a house of my own.

I know how things are in the USA but here in India its different.Once the new highrise building comes up the apartment which i will get will be free of cost and also with additional area. My building is 70 years old but it maybe 5 to 6 years before the new bldg comes up. I am paying a rent(old rent) of Rs 300/= which comes to $ 6.70 per month, ridiculously cheap isn`t it? So i don`t mind spending a little money in the painting, though i had initially thought of doing patchwork. Thanks for the comment.

It's great that you're getting your house painted...it must be a huge place if it's going to take that long and that a new tower highrise will replace it. My home had very weathered boards but rather than painting I chose to have it cladded. It will never need painting. I could only afford to have the front and 2 sides done and will have to wait a while before I can have the back and the garage done. I might have the garage painted instead.

No, its not a huge place, just 640 sq ft in area. Yesterday the men (there are only 2 of them) completed one bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, toilet(both seperate) and kitchen attached balcony in all respects.Today they have started on the front verandah and this will take another week as it is quite big, 22ft x 6 ft wide. There is also the staircase lobby which is about 8ft square to be done. Both will take a week to complete and then there are all the doors and windows to be done too.I have to get it completed in the next 10 days as there is a party at my residence on 3rd Jan.

I've not experienced any such thing on the scale you described. It's a shame to have to put that much money into a building that will be torn down in a relatively short time.

I know, but i had to do it since my ceiling was crumbling in the rooms and part of it had even fallen down in many places. You see my building is 70 years old and i had not carried out any major repairs since then. However there is still plenty of time for the demolition of the building since the talks with the developer are still in a very preliminary stage. Thanks for your comment.

Hello veejay,
I remember so well way back 14 years ago when we need to be relocated since the government need to use the residential area where our house use to stand. One of the main highway needs to be built within the place for growing motorists.
It is more beneficial for us,becoz we are well compensated from the building(our house)being demolished and also we are given a free relocation(thu the land is smaller compared to our old space)but the place is fine, coz it is still along the city.
At first it is quiet hard to build a new house, and personally,i do paint our house.
But,after the hardwork,i feel proud of what i have done.
We had our new house...and almost everything built with my own touch too.

Hello veejay19 this is checkmail and its good to know that you are getting your house painted and also some worry as your house will be demolished within five years. But think that it will bw all good if the builders allot you an premises within the highrise building. The paintin job of house is really an difficult job, as it needs, the first color to be erased completely, than plaster it properly, than apply paint over it.Even there have to shifting of goods from one room to another often. It includes a lot of work and energy in it, but don't think that it would take 15 days, much less time for painting and house.Well lets hope the best alternativ comes out for you.Enjoy Mylotting

Thanks checkmail for your response.Already one week has passed and i am sure it will take another 10 days or even more for the work to be completed. Yes, all old tenants will be given premises in the new building and with more area too when it is constructed. My building is 70 yrs old and needs to be redeveloped though it is still strong and in a good condition.
