Ever have Laryngitis?

I was just on the phone with my MIL for 15-20 minutes and my voice started getting raspy. So now I'm down to talking a raspy whisper like sound. Wich sux since I do have 3 kids to mind all day and it's easier to verbally correct them rather than just physically remove them from the senario. I have lost my voice before and it usually returns in a day or two. I think the first time I lost it was around this time of year after my oldest was born. Thankfully I don't work for a few days. I wonder though if it was from working the past 2 days & talking so much wich of course is part of most peoples jobs + some sort of whatever kind of inflamation / infection as suggested on sites that I've looked at. Other than a tiny bit flemmy I'm fine. Though my 7yo suggested I take a nap *LOL* too bad I can't cause she can't watch herself or her siblings. Hubby suggested I turn the heat up since I put a scarf on cause my neck felt cold an hour or so before I lost my voice. We'll see..... though I have an appointment to run to tomorrow & a run to the grocery store... yay for lil note pads *LOL* If you've had it how long did it last you? Any home remidies that do the trick? (besides not talking @ all)

I do have recurrent laryngitis. I am an online English teacher so I often overuse my voice. But, fortunately, I didn't get a hoarse voice very often. I only feel a little pain, especially when talking. I also get fever everytime my laryngitis recur. I guess that is what laryngitis is. I think you need to rest your voice for a period of one month. I am not telling you not to talk within that span of days but just minimize the usage of your voice. Avoid eating sweets, cold, and spicy foods as well. I think that's what I should do as well.

um..partial.it strained me to talk, but i never fully lost it. i used to get strep throat often and the throat would be more or less infected. usually lots of fluids and resting the throat brought it back. worst thing was having to talk.

I have never lost my voice before. I would go crazy not being able to talk. My kids would be all over the place if I could not tell them to knock it off. I would try drinking some hot tea or something warm to try and soothe your throat.

I had it a few times but the most memorable was in High School. I hated my step-monster with a passion so I made sure not to get sick and if I did, I tried like heck to hide it. Unfortunately, me being a loud and obnoxious teen, I couldn't hide that fact at all. I couldn't talk but in a whisper and strained as hard as I could and still couldn't squeak! I found out that being quiet helped, mix tea(any that you can stand or prefer)good and hot with about 6 drops of lemon and about a teaspoon of honey( natures antibiotic) and drink a cup about every two hours. I got stuck at home for a total of 2 weeks and about the last four days were easier to deal with. I got at least a rasp, then I could squeak and then finally two days before I was to return, I got my voice back. I could have done that sooner and got away from the monster, but i didn't know any better then. It still works today, plus if you have a cold underlying this ailment, the lemon and honey will help much better and you will heal much faster. Just keep fluids in you and you should be fine soon. Good luck. I have 8 to tend to and would hate that to happen right now

Oopss sorry about that. I know the feeling since I had laryngitis not once but more than twice. The last time I had it was a year ago so I went to the doctor and gave me anti-biotics for 10 days. Then the doc also suggested saline gargle mornings and evenings. Well, it healed after a few days but I had to take the anit-biotics for 10 days so it will not reccur. I also take orange juice with honey when I my throat really hurts and a raspy voice. Not talking not all is out of the suggestions LOL

In the late 1990's I got sick and one morning I woke up with no voice. I felt fine otherwise, and went to work. Nobody noticed I wasn't talking until my supervisor realized I was THERE but hadn't said good morning. She stood up so she could see me, (there was a bookcase between us) and said good morning. I turned around and whispered "good morning" then they all laughed at me because I had no voice. I then did NOT have a voice to speak of for several weeks and my voice was different for several months after that! I asked the doc when my voice would be normal again and he said he rather liked my "deep, sexy voice" he was joking.
