Tired Hockey Mama

Well, I got up at 4 this morning so I could get my buddy to his hockey game. They played two games. First game was messy. Boys were still asleep. Every goal they got was a dirty goal but they won 6-2. My son had 1 goal, 1 assist for that game. Second game the boys woke up. They won 9-4. More of the passing game they usually have. My son had a hat trick for that game!! So, 5 total points for this weekend. This was a league game so winning these 2 games ensures a spot in the playoffs. The second game got a bit chippy. The other team was frustrated and very protective of their goalie. One of our kids dropped his gloves and punched a kid in the front of the net. The other team had been pushing and bumping and our kid just got sick of it and laid the other kid out. Of course he received a game misconduct and will not be able to play the next league game. I went to the locker room after this kid got ejected to see if he was ok. I thought he would be upset but he told me he was proud of what he did and that he was going to defend himself when someone comes after him. I really didn't like hearing him say that. I would be mortified if my son had done this. My son has pushed and and gotten in players faces but has never dropped his gloves. You think this kid did the right thing defending himself or should he have just stood there and taken the punch? Hard being a hockey mom sometimes.

Yes, I understand that it is a bit disturbing to hear this from the kid. But you must understand that sports is very tribal, and this is a dude thing. And I know where his pride is coming from. That on the ice, he made a statement. That everybody should know what happens if they cross him. Now, the trick is that he temper this so he might reach whatever career he plans on having. And that I think is the job of the coach. Anyway, you have a regular Gretsky in your kid there. Congratulations!

Funny you should say that because my son has watched the Gretsky DVDs we have a billion times. I think he has made it his life's ambition to be like him. He practices on the driveway every day. Yesterday he had a goal that looked just like one of his "driveway goals" I have seen him do over and over again. He even makes me stand outside and watch him as he fine tunes his celebrations after scoring. He has all kinds of crazy little moves he does after he scores a goal. Hockey boys are weird!! And smelly!! I also have to be the "pretend" announcer and say "One minute left in the period".... and then of course, He shoots.. he scores!!!! And of course I give him a kiss and ask for his autograph!! Maybe it will happen some day. Would be very rare for a boy from the south to become an NHL hockey player...

Haha! So, does he do Ovie's hot stick celebration? Alex Burrows of the Canucks does an arrow to the sky celebration! That's the best part of players scoring sweet goals, the celebration after. Well, I do hope your boy makes it to the NHL. Just imagine the feature stories that would be run as soon as he is drafted!

I was talking to him about all of this earlier. I told him that we would probably need to move up to North Dakota or Minnesota when he is in high school. He has family up there and his grandfather went to North Dakota. He's going to go to a hockey camp in Minnesota this summer. Needs to make friends in other areas where kids play hockey all the time.

Hard being a sporting parent at all. I agree with Bounce, it's a boy thing. Now it's the coches job to remind him how miserable a place the bench is to be during a big game. Saying what he did..maybe just saving face and maybe he's gong to be the next pronger if someone doesn't reign him in. Sounds like your son had a great game! My kids were lucky we didn't live close enough to any place for them to play hockey, I would have had them all in skates as soon as they could walk. I learned to love football..and basketball..and baseball..and to appreciate shot putting..supported the golf..but never learned to like it. Hope you get rewarded with a well-deserved nap!!
