It’s end of the year, and some of us have started to clear our annual leave, otherwise the leave balance will be burnt. It’s kinda wasteful to burn the leave, isn’t it?
I still have 7 day balance, and I am going to take the last two weeks of December off, with applying another two day unpaid leave. This is the first time I take two weeks off, so that I can spend more time with my baby. I am really looking forward to it. ^_^
How many leave balance do you still have up to now? Do you manage to clear them all by the end of the year? Or does your company allow you to carry forward those leave to next year? Or can you convert the leave balance to cash?

We have two types of leaves. One is casual leave. The company will not allow this to carry forward. The other one is the earned leave and this can be either carry forward or encash. I have nore than 30 days leave balance and some more will be accumulated in the moth of January.Wish you happy holidays and good time with your baby.

I am self employed so I just take leave when ever I want, but that is not always easy since if I don't work then work does not get done. But my business is internet oriented so I can shut my site off for a few days if I need to take time off, of course I won't make any money but if I need time off that is what I have to do. My husband has 4 days left he is taking them all off the week of Christmas. He is really looking forward to that, it makes it longer because he automatically gets of Christmas and Christmas Eve. The company will only allow people to carry days forward if they were not able to take days off at the end of the year because every one else is off and they are covering for everyone. I don't know if he could convert them to cash or not, but I he would rather have the time off.

Yeah I guess that is where most balances go December or during Christmas Breaks. I think that is the best time to apply those excess leaves on us. Converting them on cash depends on the policy adopted by your employer. There are those that do that but many are forcing their employees to be on leave to enjoy it than converting them to cash.

This discussion brings me nostalgic memories. Now I am a retired person. But at the time of working, our casual leaves were not carried forward to the next year, whereas the ordinary leave and sick leave were getting added to the next year. Throughout the year, we used to save the casual leave for any necessities like our or family members' sickness, guests, festivals (to make sweets one day before) etc. When December came, usually few days leave would have been left out in the balance. The whole of office used to look deserted at the end of the December month. Even I used to exhaust my leave at the last week of December. The happiness is that, the leave was not utilised for some work or sickness as before, but for enjoyment or relaxation to spend time with children.

Hello! Yes, we get vacation time. I get two weeks vacation time. I used one week around Thanksgiving (in November) and I'm using my second week around Christmas! At my job you have to work at least one year before getting vacation. Then as the years go up you get more vacation. One to three years of employment is two weeks. Four to ten is three weeks, and eleven or more is four weeks. We get all major holidays off, one personal day, and 5 sick days per year. For our sick days if we don't use them they will pay us for them. Our vacation or personal days must be used by the end of each year. If not, they are lost and they don't rule over. We cannot receive cash for them.

that's nice your company can approve your 2 weeks leave and here will never approve any long leave more than 1 week . though we have much annual leave not spent but no way to spend it in one time especial on this end of year period. so many staffs on the company can't enjoy the annual completely . every eyar.

I've never had a job where we had vacation time. I've always had to work year round. One place I worked at, you were allowed to request vacation days, but you had to request them 2 months in advance. If you try to request a day for 2 months from know, they would say they can't, because they don't know what they schedule will be like in 2 months.
So it was a big loophole, making it seem like you could actually get a vacation day, when they really wouldn't let you. I'm glad I work for myself now!

Hi Kaka,
Our company did not allow to carry forward the annual leave to next year, and I have 2 days annual leave left. Basically my 5 annual days are spending on the sick leave as I don't want to ask for sick leave. It is great that the leave balance can be converted to salary, but our company did not have any kind of benefits.
I envy you that you are able to have two weeks off soon, which is quite a long holiday um....You could take your baby out to have a tourism.

how i wish i had something like that? i'm a temp and therefore i get paid per hour. if i choose not to work 1 hour then no pay...in a way it is nice in the sense that i am freelancing at the same time when it comes to leave its a sad story. i'm looking forward to the public holidays..
