Its an indisputable fact that technology has invaded all aspects of our lives including manufacturing .One would argue that with this being the case we would expect superior products tan when compared to the past when things were manually made. However is the case ,I look at cars today and I realize that they are more sophisticated some cars can even park themselves but then meet in a an accident and the paper thin sides crumple around you .So is it really better or only better in some aspects. I have tried to discuss the pros and cons of technology vs. manual methods but that is only one example ,I am now giving you the task, my fellow mylotters to come up with other examples that you will advance this discussion and hopefully conclude this issue

Yes, i agree with you on this. Example: Once upon a time kitchens had metal cupboards. Ive rented a couple places that still have them. I love them. the hinges are more durable. Overall they are more durable. They are washable. Sure you can wash the wooden ones too but ughhhhh..... Now you find wooden cupboards. They fall apart at the seams. Handles fall off too. The wood gets ugly as it ages.

I hink some things were better back in the day. The Automobile is one of those. Back in the day there were less cars and less companies making them so they used better material. Today's car is made mostly of plastic. instead of steel.

I would answer this question from the Indian point of view. Technology has surely improved, but the quality has deteriorated like anything. I remember iron goods were so thick and heavy and qualitative in those days. I have two huge wardrobes in my house which were bought way back when I was a child and also one more before I was born. These two carry the quality and endurance up to this day. But recently a few years back my sister bought one metal wardrobe and, believe me, it's not been more than 6 years, and one leg stand is broken already. There are deteriorations in many other things. For eg... even in the quality of clothing. The more expensive the better doesn't work here. Every manufacturing has it's own defects, and you pay an unworthy price for everything. Labour work has become expensive, but the efficiency and quality is zero... A total zero. I would rate that even with automobiles and two wheelers. The Enfield, Rajdoot, and Java and Yezdi bikes of the 60's and 70's were awesome.... But ever since Enfield set up it's factory in India and shifted from Britian, it has lost it's quality now. So, there have been good and bad changes, but the bad changes are more with improving technology. Quality of paper has deteriorated, and also the quality of publishing, quality of pens and so many other things... You can just see these big smalls spring up everywhere assuring you utensils and other apparels for a cheap price with discount, but when you take a close look at all these things, you are bound to find some defect or the other. The man who sells stainless steel utensils on the street, has the audacity to show you his pieces which carry clear marks of unfinished work, and charges you shamelessly a 100 bucks. Fab India, Mysore is another example and I was so angry with their attitude. We were looking for some dresses, and they shamelessly put damaged shirts on display. They didn't remove it even when we pointed it out to them. In fact we hadn't noticed it first when we tried it on, and later the showroom in charge shamelessly asks us, "Aren't you going to take it?" And we were like, "How could you even have the audacity to sell something like that?" A torn shirt? Can you imagine the attitude? People are so careless, and they just don't care anymore. In fact when we went back to the shop after a few days, we still saw the shirt on display and mark was so clear. There was not one but a couple of shirts which were like that. Just imagine the attitude. It's with everything.... Quality of work and labour is just deteriorating with time.

u WANT FIND ANYTHING made has good as it use to be. Appliannces is one of my peeves. A refrigerator use to last for a bunch of years. WHEN I HAD TO BUY ONE 2 YEARS AGO THE GUY I BOUGHT IT FROM SAID THEY WEREN'T MADE TO LASY BUT 10 YEARS. tHAT IS RIDICULOUS!! i KNOW CLOTHES AREN'T made as well. U get home w/something new & find a seam that has not been sewed etc. I think it is ridiculous at the coast of things that aren't going to last no time.

I had studied about automation manufacturing. I think that the manufacturing technology in nowadays is much more better than the past. The manual method could not product the same quality. Although it is done by the same person or skill worker. It is hard to maintain same quality when the quantity is increasing. If the manufacturing using machine and advance technology, then the quality and quantity of the product could be control. The production rate of the particular product could be product easily. The advance technology also can be adjusted for variable types of product.

Hello my friend ronnyb Ji, I totally decend with you. There is a proverb "OLD IS GOLD' and will remain for ever. There has been great compromise with quality. Bridge constructed for particular life have come out safley double of their life, whereas, it is evryday affair watching newly constructed houses/buildings/bridges getting collapsed. Even cars of old models run better and tehy are all weather. My hubby stillm drives Bajaj 'Priya' even after 17 yrs of it's manufacture. In nut shell quality has been compromised to save cost. Even old buildings constructed some hundreds of year are found air-cooled with high cielings, unlike today, where first floor is reuced to mer 12 ft. in its height. Nothing is as durable as earlier. Wishing you a very happy New Year-2010. May God bless You and have a great time.

I definitely think the manufactured goods from the past were alot better than what they are now. Goods these are of less quality. The cost is outragious also for the quality you get.

Yes...I can see that manufactured goods are better nowadays than in the fast. But how I wish some appliances will last much longer because quality sometimes are less behind and sacrifice for quantity. I also wish that companies can invent some materials that wont harm peoples health and well being and most importantly wont harm our mother earth.

I definitely believe that a lot of things, especially electrical appliances are not as well made these days as they used to be; they may be more technologically advanced but certainly no longer made to last as they were. I have a chest freezer which was bought in 1984 and is still works perfectly 25 years later! I had my first VCR for over 12 years, since then I have bought three! I think that manufacturers may intentionally make things to last only a limited time.

there are good and expensive things always but i know on the past there are no posion coats or shoes but now many bad materials used on those low quality products to harm our body. maybe the high technology attached products may become bettter and better but i'm not sure.

Goods from the past were made stronger and made to last a long time. Now we have technology and the manufacturing of items is faster and more can be made but it is not as good as the products built in the past. There is also the producing and package of food products today which is not as good at in the past you are always hearing of some recall because of some kind of bacteria in a food product. I think we have more food recall now then there ever was in the 50s.

for me things become better and this is a great contribution of tehcnology. Goods are already affordable and so handy. Unlike before goods are heavy and only a few people can afford to have one (eg. cellphones). But what differs is the quality. Nowadays, an item that costs high for sure is a good quality and for low costs doesn't necessary come very low quality. it depends also how a user will handle such itwm.

Technology bring better products, but they also bring impurities with them! My bike's use to be a very strong one! I bought a new one and found that they had reduce the thickness of the bike's body! Thats a shame! I just hated the new bike! i sold if off eventually! The old one's still intact!

In th past is my answer. I have a Kenmore washer and dryer which was purchase in February 1978. They have never needed any kind of repair and have been in constant use from then until now. I dont think that kind of quality can be beaten.

Cars crumpling is a safety issue--it may damage the car more, but it damages the passengers less! This "paper thin" nature is actually technology, sophistication, and science for YOUR benefit. While I can see the negatives of this (as you described), I understand the positives of it as well. I think the problem with a lot of cars and other products is that a long time ago they were made to last. Now they have built in obsolescence and are made to break down so you buy a new one after a certain point.
