Now when I was growing up ,my mother used to bake cake from the ingredients ,sugar ,flour ,butter etc with a a lot of rubbing and creaming ,most of which I did untill my hands hurt lol.Today there are various mixes that can be had .Inspite of all my expertise though I am not able to tell the difference between the two but my mother is able tell the differences.
Can you tell the difference ,if so what is the difference ,have you a you ever had the both kinds ?

I can tell the difference. However this come as a result of two things in my case. My mother baked for years and my husband also bakes. I have acquired this taste.
You can know the difference with materials in it and also the type. Although, this is hardley notiable with technology. I have had all kinds of cakes in all kinds of setting because my mother and my husband have done extensive baking for years.

I think that a person who is used to one or the other can tell the difference. When made from scratch some cakes have less sugar in them then the box mixes. I've tried a lot of different cakes over the years and I think it really boils down to how it's made with water or milk and if they froze it or not to lock in the moisture.
It can be hard to tell the difference unless you're used a consistant way you make it.

No I cannot taste the difference. Usually I do not have to wonder which it is as when it is baked from scratch the baker of the cake makes it very loud and clear by telling everyone that it did not come from a mix!

I have never heard of a cake being baked from rubbing. I know it can be made from scratch though. I have never seen it done. I have only seen it made and have made it myself from a cake mix that is premade.

I don't think I could tell the difference either, your mom can because she knows what goes into both. Now I could tell you the difference between some kinds of pie filling just by the texture but I could be easily fooled about some other stuff. Ask her how she knows and then you'll both have a secret weapon.
