Three Guests for Christmas Dinner Turns into Nine!

United States
December 22, 2009 5:56pm CST
We thought the house would be very quiet this Christmas. With 3 of my children not being able to be with us this Christmas would certainly be different. My eldest daughter, her fiance, and his mother are coming to dinner. It was to be a small and quiet affair. Then to my surprise, my husband invited my brother, his wife and my niece, my nephew, his wife, and my great-niece! Having only planned for a few people, I only had a small ham for our meal. Now I have to purchase 2 chickens to roast and a few other items. The guests will bring something with them to share with the meal. I will be making most of the food, including dessert. Although I hadn't planned for a large gathering, I know it will be a warm and wonderful time. Blessings and best wishes to everyone for a joyous Christmas filled with love and happiness. Big huggers too!

I was dumbfounded when my hubby told me that he invited extra. But, I love the idea of having a bunch of people around. It will lift my spirits higher.

I know the feelking of unexpected guests. I guess if you are given enough warning to get to the shops before they close for Christmas or run oput of certain food items, it doesnt matter so much. When I was with my ex hubby, I would often have up to ten to prepare for. Like you, I did most of the cooking, but guests would bring a salad or desert. The only problem we had was that my brotherinlaws family (2 adults, 2 teenagers) would turn up with very little, but eat like they were starving. This got to be really annoying and another sister in law stopped talking to them for a year over it. Still, I dont have that problem now. Have a great Christmas.

I no doubt will have a good day. Having extra people around will fill the void of not having all of my children and grandchildren with me this year. Have a wonderful Christmas!

I know that Christmas will be quiet this year. It will only be my husband, the three cats and I. I am also making a ham, green beans and baked potatoes. For dessert I will be making a chocolate peanut butter pie. For Cristmas Eve we will be going over to my husband's cousins house. My cousin called me earlier and asked me to bring ginger bread cookies and sugar cookies. I had already planned on making fudge, but now that I think about it between my husband and his cousin it will be gone before anyone else gets a chance to eat it. (It was my husband's mother's recipe) and every Christmas she made it.

Our 3 cats did a lot of hiding. Two of them came out after a while. One stayed hidden the entire time!

My two female cats hide, but my male cat Smyles loves people. As a matter of fact the other day our friends came up to surprise us and Smyles jumped into his arms. Smyles is the type of cat who would invite a total stranger into the house and would kiss them and hug them. Smyles has a personality all of his own.

I love the big gathering. I have never had a small gathering. It seems this year I am doing all the cooking to. I have not even purchase the cornish hens yet, but I plan to buy early this morning. I will just wake up really early Christmas morning and cook.

It is a lot of work. Hubby commented on how much work it will be! I think he forgot that he was the one that invited the extra people!

My daughter is having Christmas at her house, since she has plenty of room for both her family AND her husband's. Tonight she called since her sister, my daughter, informed her that the ham and turkey that she is giving for dinner WILL NOT BE COOKED BY HER. She expects the daughter hosting to cook her ham and turkey, even though she was informed that she already had one of each of her own that were being prepared at HER house already. The second daughter's concern is that she has an electric oven AND having to transport it to the second house along with 3 children. (no one is feeling sorry for her....) The third daughter then called about something else entirely, and I was told that she is in on the conversation and entirely NEW things came up about going to the first daughter's house. I don't remember ever having all this drama when we did Christmas with my siblings and I don't want to be in the middle of it, but I find that I am even though I will NEVER be the peace keeper SO........I will be preparing both a ham and a turkey, besides whatever dish the hosting daughter does NOT get from all who are attending, since I told her to let me know when she has heard from everyone else. It was so much easier when the kids were younger and my place wasn't too small and I just did it all myself and they brought a couple things a piece!!

A few years ago we tried to hold the dinner at the home of one of my children. It was a circus. I only want to have the dinner at my house. It is easier and actually it is much more festive and everyone agrees.

Wow! Triple the number you originally thought. That is kind of a nice number. With everyone bringing something, that will be nice, too. Have a joyous Christmas, too. Take care love and happiness to you, too.

Even though I did most of the food preparation it was still a great time. We had lots of left overs so we will not go hungry for the next week.

I hope you enjoyed the company and food! It seems that it's getting increasingly more difficult to get everyone together from year to year, and forget about getting everyone together on either the 24th or 25th...

Unexpected company can be a bit of a strain. If they are like my family though they are there for the fellowship, not the food. Take a deep breath and exhale it will all be fine and you will have terrific memories. The more the merrier is not just a cliche.
