Taking Mom To Her Appointment Was A Trip From HELL!!

I'm so serious! Anything that could go wrong, DID!! First off, mom has no sense of direction. NONE! ZAPPO! NADA! NONE!*sigh*Ok, how do I explain this? lol Mom had an appointment with her doctor on Tuesday who specializes in dizziness, his office is 4 hours drive away. Dad usually takes her but this time, their neighbor next door to their right, Kathy, was having surgery on that day and needed someone to watch her little dog so my parents told her that they would do it not realizing mom's appointment was the same day so dad opted to stay home to watch Kathy's little dog as well as their two if I could take mom instead which I said I would and did. Well, as it turned out, Kathy had her surgery a few days sooner than expected but still, I told mom I'd take her. Besides, she said she wanted some mother and daughter time with just her and I so I agreed to still take her. Mom had made plans to stay with her cousin overnight and her cousin's name is Kathy too. She and dad had been to her house only once but mom having a GPS, we'd find it without any problems. Yeah right.
She wanted to meet me somewhere instead of my picking her up from her house which is what should've been done to begin with but nooooooo, she thought it was too far for me to go when we'd have to go back the same way I came. BIG DEAL! but she was adamant about meeting me so we picked a place. WELL WELL.... she took the wrong turn and ended up way way up the road ahead of where we were to meet. Lovely. I called dad to tell him what had happened and that I couldn't get her on the phone again although I tried so many times so he decided to go looking for her just in case she may have gone into the ditch since it was still early in the morning and ice was on the roads. He tells me to go on to this town on this same highway and see if I can see her anywhere so I did. Well, being that I didn't know the road at all except the beginning parts of it, I did as I was told and looked for her. All of the sudden, I'm on this bridge that goes on and on and on and I'm wondering "What the hell?" and then saw a sign telling me I'm on a different road! I call hubby and tell him where I'm at to figure out where I should go to find this road for I've obviously missed a turn off somewhere when I was looking for mom's car. I made a U turn and headed back the other direction and found where my road had turned off. In the meantime, dad finds mom and tells me oh yeah, the road has many turn offs. Oh great! Here I am, I don't know anything about this highway and he tells me this NOW?
So I head back and found the turn I was suppose to make and eventually found both mom and dad. Then we had to find a place for mom to park her car so she could ride with me so we ride about another 15 minutes till a truck stop was found and left her car there.
We went on to her appointment and following the GPS and I misunderstood what it said to do because I'm not used to using a GPS and ended up going around in circles. Finally I got the understanding of it and knew then where it wanted for me to go and went. Then mom calls the imaging center to get directions and they tell her that they've moved and the building is new and they doubt the GPS will pick up on that just yet. Oh great!! Just great!! So she gave us directions and we did our best to follow them and ended up having to call them back and keep them on the phone to tell us where to go. We finally found the place and mom got her MRI done then it was off to the doctors. We get there and well, I'll tell you about that in another discussion.
We went to lunch at Cracker Barrel and then headed towards Kathy's, mom's cousins house. By then it was getting dark so the roads were starting to ice up. Following the GPS, we get to this house which we thought was Kathy's, mind you, mom's memory just isn't there. We get all our luggage and things out, mom has to carry everything and the kitchen sink, and we take as much as we can in one trip to the back door, I had put everything I had down in a chair to help mom up the steps and this young girl comes out and says something to the affect, "I hate to ask you this but who are you?" I turned around to mom and said "MOM?" and she about laughed herself silly and told the girl we were here to see Kathy but apparently we had the wrong house and the girl said that Kathy was next door but we were close!
Talking about being embarrassed!! Indeed I was!! Here we were, all this luggage and mom not able to walk very well and it's icy cold outside, we looked like a bunch of idiots!! lol I get mom back in the car and everything loaded back up and head for next door. I made damned sure it was the right house before taking a thing out of the car!! It was, thank God!! By then I was so exhausted that I went upstairs and found a blanket and fell asleep on the couch. Eventually, mom and Kathy came searching for me and couldn't find me because I was buried under the blanket that I blended in with the pillows. lol
By then, it was about 2 hours later so I got up to visit some more and then we went to bed. The next morning which was yesterday, we got up and had a nice breakfast and started for home because Kathy and her husband had a concert to go to later that day. On the way home, we got lost again because the GPS was telling us to go one way when we knew we wanted to go another way. Besides, mom's car was on the road we needed to take so I had to make another U turn and get on the road we knew we wanted to take and had to reset the GPS to go this route instead. We found mom's car and I followed her. Well, we got lost even though we followed the road to where it said to go. Come to find out, there's two of the same road!! One is an old one and then the new one! You'd think they'd change the name to one of them so people like mom and I would know which one to go on!!
But nooooooo, they named them both the same!! No damned wonder we got lost!! We did find the other highway that we needed to get on and well, we got home.
Needless to say, it was a trip from HELL!! I vowed to look the highway up on the computer so I can get a better understanding of how it goes so if in the event I need to take her again, I'll know where the hell I'm going!! lol
Have you ever had a trip from hell? I sure hope not! It's no fun! Especially in this cold weather with all this snow and ice that we have right now.

oh catsanddogs what an awful time you and your mom had. sometimes it seems like life is just out to get us, and we make a wrong turn and then some more before it gets straightened out. oh yes my husband and I and our little girl, this was many years ago, were trying to find this particular place that sold inexpensive engines for international harvester trucks, seems the company had gone out of business, but this oneplace Sun something did have several engines for our old international ford. but after wandering back and forth on the freeway due to the man at the store sending us the wrong direction we found it, had it put in and were finally happily on our way back home on the freeway. unfortunately a truck ahead of us had a huge keg of nails. the keg rolled off the open back of the truck, and the driver kept going, not knowing that he had strewn hundreds of goodly sized nails on the freeway. ten of us were stuck with flat tires, all four of our tires had been punctured by dozens of these huge nails. just behind us was a limosene with a chauffeur driving it a nd an elderly man beside him,. He didnt get any of the nails in the limo so he insisted on calling AAA who towed our truck to this man's garage one of many he owned, and then he took us to this garage and paid for four new tires for us with his aaa card, then insisted on taking us out to dinner to an Italian restaurant owned by,you guessed, this man, a whole chain of them across several states. after a really nice dinner he took us back and our truck was all ready to go. Now I cannot remember his name but he was one very wealthy man and looked like an angel to me.

Wow! What a story Hatley! That is really something! Wow.... That man had made his way to Heaven, no doubt for he shared his wealth with the people who needed help and that's what we all should do, if and when we can. May God bless his soul! He had so much love to give and he gave it when it was needed the most. It's these kinds of stories that makes my Christmas the most enjoyable! Thanks for telling it!

I'm sorry, cats but you just made your trip from hell sound so much like FUN. Hope your Christmas turns out better than this trip did.

Wish it were YOU doing it instead of me!! LMBO!! I learned a valuable lesson though. I will make damned sure to have a bigger map to see more of an area than the GPS shows so I can compare the two together and not get lost anymore!! BTW, I's still lovs ya!!

lol When I enter unfamiliar waters, Cats....I WANT to get lost..I love to just drive around out in the country somewhere, enjoying the views and worry about finding my way back later. Most times, I end up back on the main road anyways.

You are amazing! You want to get lost? That is one way to find your way around by taking roads that you don't know where it goes and finding that out. I'm not scared when I get lost because I feel this way, as long as I have gas in my car, I can keep on driving till I find my way. There's some people who are terrified of getting lost and I'm not one of them but I don't like the feeling of being lost but I don't panic.

If it was not for the cold and ice and obvious tension, I would find this funny. I tend to laugh at the wrong things. I am glad that in the end everything came out okay. It can be really frustrating when devices that are supposed to be helpful really mess things up. My daughter, for her trip down here and on to Oklahoma, tended to download directions from two different sources, and combine them both to get to the actual places she wanted to be. I am glad you are all safe and sound and got to see Kathy.

I'm serious and I had to laugh too for it sure did beat crying! lol Besides, seeing her laugh so hard got me to laughing but at her! lol So go right ahead and laugh!! I'm home now anyways!!

Hi there Cats and Dogs. I am so sorry to hear about your journey that went that badly. All you wanted to do was get to that appointment for my mom. I know some friends with a GPS and it sent them on a strange route to my house. Such things can be hard to follow. I am a traveler with a good sense of direction.
One of my friends is terrible at driving when he gets angry. After the last time he got like that I have said I won't ride in his car anymore. I am a learner driver and my driving is safe. My friend took the wrong road and shook the steering wheel with rage. He drove down the wrong way of a bus lane. He drove across the pavement to avoid hitting a car when he went down a one way road the wrong way. Such a trip is not at all fun.
Good luck with all your future traveling about by car.

Exactly right, all I wanted to do was get my mom to her appointments. I did learn a valuable lesson. I will make damned sure to have a bigger map to see more of the area that I'm traveling on than the GPS shows so I can compare the two together and not get lost anymore!! lol
I had ridden with a friend who drove like that and it was the last time I had ridden with them too! No need to get hurt over someone else's stupidity.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AGAIN. I have never heard of such a mress in my life, lol. I agree it had to be the trip from hell. I have never used a gps & your story sure doesn't make me want to. Have u ever used map quest? i believe u would have been better off w/that instead of the gps. Have a great day.

[b]Oh the GPS worked fine! But there's so many ways to get from point A to point B and we knew what road to take but didn't know where it was exactly. GPS thingy isn't very big and it shows what road to take that IT thinks you should take but once I got on the road I knew we needed to be on and reset the GPS again, it worked till we got to the end of that one road and then knowing from that morning that there were 2 of the same road, meaning, two roads were named the same, made it all the more confusing finding our way. I did look at the road on mapquest and saw how it goes so IF I have to take mom again, I'll know more of what to look for. But it was a lesson well learned to get a map along with the GPS to see where exactly that I'm going!! lol
I finally remembered to use bold!!
