What I'm trying to figure out is, why did Karaoke singing get so popular in clubs, lounges, and bars? They put a lot of bands out of business ! Does anyone have any insight on this?

Hi musicman, I guess Karaoke is installed in clubs and other night spots because it attracts more customers. While live bands are generally the main attraction, there are customers who want to be in the limelight if only for a short time, and this gives them the opportunity to flaunt their talent and be seen by others. This "customer need" is addressed by allowing them to sing. From where I come "sing-along" bars are also very popular, but usually there is still a live band to accompany the customer who wants to sing. So the bands are not actually displaced, they just have less exposure/playtime as part of the show becomes the customers' show.

Thank you, doryvien, your post has really given me a great idea, on how to revive the vain effort of popularizing 'the band music in clubs' again! I can take elements of the karaoke, and elements of the band music, and use them to, as you say, 'make the customer a part of the show' !

I'm guessing when people get drunk they loose all inhibitions. Plus they make some funny people to watch, they don't always sing good but... I know that the Japanese made it popular with Western music and then Rock N Roll.

I don't know. However, they're offering it in a couple of restaurants here in town now and I'm thinking about taking part in it sometime. I think it would be fun. I would much rather sing in a nice restaurant than in some bar. I hope I didn't offend you in any way. If I did, I'm sorry. I understand you have to make a living. Kathy.

Oh, no, you didn't offend me in any way , Kathy ! I thoroughly understand that not all people feel comfortable in a bar or club, and I don't hold it against anyone! By the way, I've also played in some restaurants, and really enjoyed it , because the people enjoyed listening to us! But I do commend you on your honesty! And I did enjoy your reply, because this is the type of insight that I was interested in, because this question has been in the back of my thoughts for several years! Thank you
