Do you choose male or female chicken when buying or eating?

In Chinese society, people tend to buy and eat female chickens. As a result, the price for female chickens, especially the virgin ones, are much more expensive then the male ones. Many Chinese people believes that the male chicken is harmful to health, so if they have a choice, they won't choose it. When they eat outside, they can't choose at all, as they do not know if the chicken cooked is a female one. I think most of the chickens that we eat outside in this Chinese world would be male ones, as from the business's point of view, it lower the costs.
I like eating the young female chickens, as it is more delicious.

in my hometown shandong province, we both eat hen and rooster. ofcourse hen is more nutritious than rooster, so usually if you are sick or a woman just bore a baby, then will have the hen. but for mamy people ,they like young rooster, especialy on spring festival. in tradition , every home will have a rooster offering to the gods on spriing featival
to me,i like young rooser.

It is interested to learn the habit of choosing chickens when in particular days/festival of your place - Shandong. I have been to Qingdao before, it is a very nice place and there are many beautiful houses, especially those along the seeside. I like them very much.

Hi agonyaunt69,Yes i do,as what i've learned to my mom before.She wont eat if my father cooked male chicken because she dont like the taste.Not like female chicken that is very delicious according to her.As i grow older,i just follow my mom style so that's it.That is if we were the one to buy the live chicken.But most of the time, when we bought in the grocery store we dont know if its male or female.So, i used to buy drumstick and wings.Good Luck!

The price of a male chicken is higher as it is used for breeding and female chickens are avaialble at a lesser price.
Male chickens are hard to cook as they are sold when they are of old age. In my country there are two types of chickens one is boiler and second is desi. Desi is no matter its male or female are of high price and during winters the price is too high as well.

I just think how pathetic the hens are: ) I always think the females are beautiful and tender, even the animal, LOL
Honestly, I don't want to eat any animal, coz they have lives, it is so brutal to kill them and eat them. Especially someone here even eat dogs, how cute the dogs are , they are so honest and kind, why people eat them. : (
Another view, I always think that in the natural world, all the anmials, that male are more beatiful than femal, even the chicken world, but back to human sociaty, people think woman are more good looking than man, why?

I agree. Almost all the male animals are more beautiful then female. I think the reason for those people who feel that female are more beautiful than male in the human world is most female know how to wear, how to mix and match and how to put make-up. Even though some of them do not know, they tend to try as most female love beauty. My father said, "males always the most beautiful one, including human, as we do need to put anything on our face, we do not need to make a special hair style or put on different style of clothes on different days." He's right. If a woman who do not care about her outlook and skin, she will not be looked beautiful.

I don't know when I buy the chicken in market, whether the chicken is male or female, i do not ask it, and never thought of it. I remember that my mmother told me before, she like to use old hen to cook soup, is more tasty, but she didn't mention about the rooster, so I don't know if I eat rooster is harmful my health at all. I even do not know the price is cheaper then the hen, as I buy chicken, I just take and pay it then go. I don't check the price, I think is almost the same, they don't have much different.

ofcourse female chicken and we do not like the male chicken at all.doctors here said everyone can eat female chicken but male chicken do not suit most people .that says female chicken is more healthy than hose male chicken.so female chiken is more popular here.

Wow I never knew that female chickens are more healthier to eat than male chickens. Why is that? I buy my chickens at groceries and they are frozen so I don't have an idea if they are male or female. Well I prefer native chickens they are more tasty. Well now that you mention of female chickens are more healthier to eat, the next time when I buy chicken at grocery store I will remember what you said.

I don't know for sure about that. But in my country it's not a problem whether it's a male or a female and we also don't know when buy it. And as long as the chickens are good to consume and not having virus or bacteria that can endanger human then it's safe and good to consume.

I totally agree with you, we regard hen has more nutrition than rooster, but we eat rooster too, the difference is that, we stir-fry the roosters and stew hens.

Being a chinese,why i didn't know the difference of male or female chicken?As i know ,the famers like the raise the female chickens because they can feed eggs and growth faster than males,that's why we can get more female chickens on market,you can't relate it whit taste

When I lived with my grandparents they raised chickens to eat and for eggs. Grandma usually took the males or roasters for eating first because she wanted the better females or hens for laying eggs. Once they were dressed or cleaned you couldn't tell the difference. They all tasted the same too.

I've never stopped to see if the chicken I buy is even labled as female or male. I know my dad used to raise chickens and if he ever killed one to cook it was always a hen.
