My youngest daughter got me this last Christmas (2008) and it bloomed for me this Christmas! What a nice surprise too! She bought it because she knows I love plants and use to work in a Garden Center as Head of the Houseplant department. Loved that job but they got a new Manager and she took over a few positions,
including mine.
It looks so big but it's only in a little 4" pot. I just love it. It bloomed once before too in the summertime but had only a few flowers. I think it likes where it's living right now and sits right in my front living room window. I hope the picture comes out ok for you!
Do you like the Christmas Cactus? Or do you prefer Poinsettia's? Or do you like just any plants? I like them all!

Hi there jillhill! Awwwww, sure they like you. Most people have problems with watering and that's usually the culprit. What kind do you have right now, maybe I can help a teeny bit.

You and I have a lot in common. I just like plants. I have a Christmas cactus that I have neglected too much. It has not bloomed in awhile. Usually it tends to bloom more on Mother's Day for me. I got houseplants for Christmas, that made me happy. Hubby bought me a clearanced miniature pine tree in a fancy pot while he was out today. He got me a pot of schefflera (a small pot) for Christmas. While Christmas shopping I bought a cycad that was distressed.

I have no official training either, but a great interest in them. Another name for cycad is sago palm. They are supposed to be a prehistoric plant. It looks like a bulb or pine cone sitting on top of the soil, with three fronds sticking up.

Hi Gerty! You know there is a Easter Cactus also, so maybe that's what you have? I love the miniature pine tree's and would have bought myself one this year if I had some extra money, just love em! They're just so cute!
Oh, Schefflera are so pretty and they can get to be a good size, I use to sell alot of those because I liked them so much. It's so easy to sell what you like, haha. I'm not familiar with a Cycad, I'll have to do some googling for that one.
When I worked for the garden center, I kind of took over the houseplant section on my own as everyone was just killing everything by overwatering. They let me have my way and saw I had a knack for growing houseplants, even though I have no particular education in it. My Manager was amazed when I was able to get a Bird-of-Paradise to bloom. He worked there for five years and never saw one bloom so he was quite intrigued and even took a picture to send over to the owner. I felt pretty good about that, haha, and it was a bright orange, very pretty.

Awwwww, ususally it's a watering problem with these plants that creates a problem. I know alot of people either water it too much, or don't water it at all thinking it's an actual cactus, which it's not.
I was reading online the other day and came across a Christmas Cactus that is 145 years old...it's been passed down from generation to generation from the late 1860s I believe. I was totally amazed at the little article.

Hi AmbiePam, yes, they are very pretty and can live to be a ripe old age if taken care of. I like Poinsettia's too and usually get one for Christmas, but alas, not this year.
There are different types of these cactus, one is called Christmas Cactus, then Thanksgiving Cactus, and Easter Cactus. The leaves are slightly different on them but they all are beautiful...and come in many different colors too.
Make sure you get directions on how to care for it as it's not like a regular cactus from the desert.

That's a really nice plant and thats awfully sweet of your daughter.
My Mom's a plant lover as well, and me and my boyfriend would always buy her plants whenever there's an occasion. Like her birthday, Mother's day or Christmas.
Happy new year to you Kashmeresmycat

Thank you donsky, I really love it. It was a very nice surprise right for the Christmas season too. I would like to get plants all year long, the more the merrier, lol! My front window seems to be the perfect spot for them.

That's beautiful. Congratulations. I have a garden too and during Christmas time what blooms profusely are Chrysanthemums (4 colours), Poinsettias, Bouganvillae - 8 colours, Sweet Peas (red), and a few others that bloom throughout the year.

Oh my gosh, your pictures are just beautiful! Is that really your garden? I wish I lived in a warmer climate so I could have a pretty garden too. But, living in an apartment only gives me a certain amount of space and light so I do the best I can right now.
My daughters both have houses with nice backyards, one was just bought last summer, so you know where I'll be when it warms up, lol! Love working in a yard, it takes your problems away.

Yes I have a large garden and that is my life. I have several fruit trees that attract birds and I have installed a birdbath for the birds to bathe. I have taken countless video clips and pictures of my garden. Thanks for your appreciation.

What a beautiful flower and I'm glad it bloomed for you this Christmastime. I also love poinsettia's but could never have since they are so very poisonous to kitties. I don't have any plants at the moment but would love to get some eventually to spruce up the place with living growing things

Hi Pye! Thank you, I love my little plant, haha. It was such a nice little surprise for Christmas and I was really shocked on how many flowers bloomed. And, they bloomed for over a week constantly.
Most people believe poinsettia's are "poisonous" but they are not. Here's a link for you to read.......http://hort4.unl.edu/hort-tip/poinset2.htm.......and I also learned that while I worked at the Garden Center, and I thought the same thing. The link I found for you is from a horticulturist with a very informative article that I think you'll find interesting to read.
It would be nice for you to get some plants Pye, they make me feel good for some reason.....call me crazy, lol!
