Have you planted a garden? What do you grow in your garden? What is it that you like about gardening?

I have always had a garden. I started with my first patch inside my granpas garden when I was very small and fell in love with growing anything. When my kids were all small and at home I had a huge vegetable garden and would spend all of september canning and freezing the bounty. Now I do my vegetables in containers on my deck and have planted flower beds every where. This spring I will be putting in two more flower beds and enlarging my rose garden. I like everything about the garden. I call it playing in the dirt. It is my tranquility, my stress releiver, my exercise, and my passion.

...Hi there jewels49, Happy 2010. Now you are what I would call the ultimate gardener. I seriously admire a person who can do what you do. Plant things and they grow out of the ground, ready to eat. My grandmother's used to grow things on their farms and can them, I always thought that would be so neat to do, but alas city life has me purchasing seeds and never going any further with my dream. I thought about box trays to grow some things, but so far I haven't. I still want to and hopefully I will. Roses as well, I think you are great. May 2010 be very good to you and your family.

Thank you artistry and happy 2010 to you. With a user name like artistry Iwould think you only need to plant the seeds, the rest will take care of itself. It's easy to grow things like tomatoes and beans and peas in large containers, you can do that anywhere you have a sunny spot.

Hi artistry, I don't have a garden as such but I do have an olive grove. I don't grow anything in it as I kill everything I attempt. It is a beautiful grove though with two terraces of olive trees and in a few weeks there will be poppies and orchids growing there amongst the wild herbs. Nearer to the house what ought to be a garden is overgrown weeds, they shoot up like mad when it rains. Now and again I get someone in to strim it but quite like this natural look.

Of course. There's a discussion lying around somewhere about the olive harvest.

...Hi thea, For some reason I was sure you had an orange grove, I guess because of the marmalade and the question about the excess oranges. I can't keep house plants alive, I over water them or some other thing that causes them to dry up. Your olive grove sounds very impressive, poppies, orchids and wild herbs. How colorful. Do you press your olives at all for the oil? Thanks for sharing. Take care.

...Hi there shavvy, Welcome to the ranch, enjoy yourself, it is a fun place to be. Well, it sounds as though you are very good at your hobby. That is quite an assortment of greenery you have planted and grown, Good for you, I am sure you get great pleasure in seeing what your efforts have produced. You might want to reasearch on the internet about the bonsai trees and how to grow them, there might just be the information you need or try a nursery for plants, they may have written information, they may want to sell you one as well :o). But do try the internet. Thanks so much for sharing, sounds like you enjoy your hobby. Have a great New Year, you and your family.

I planted a garden for the very first time about 5 years ago! I never really wanted to be a gardener, but my husband talked me into it. I planted corn, green beans, squash, onions, cucumbers, peas, eggplant, peppers, beets, cantalope...etc....and it turned out great! Everything grew, I kept the weeds out, and it was a beautiful garden. I've planted a garden every year since but it just seems like something has happened, and things aren't growing like they used to. I will probably plant another one this spring, but if it doesn't turn out, I will be done. It's a lot of work but it's also a lot of fun when things grown like they are supposed to.

...Hi there renee22093, I am so impressed with your ability, so many good things you have planted and grown. You should be so proud of yourself. Do you think the soil needs some kind of replenishing, all of the nutrients may be gone. I was born on a farm, but have no idea about growing things, that was just a guess as to why the vegetables are not growing anymore. I hope you find the answer. Take care. Thanks for responding. Have a great New Year. Welcome to the ranch by the way, enjoy.

My family normally does a vegetable garden every year. For the most part its green peppers, radishes, tomatoes, and then sometimes something extra to throw in the mix. I know for them they do it because once it starts going you have enough for the entire family and end the end it saves us money in groceries because groceries are slowly becoming outrageous in prices especially produce.

...Hi anotherxidentity, you are certainly correct in your assessment about the price of produce. With all the drought problems and water shortages, even the pumpkins were less than needed this year, according to reports. I admire people who grow things. I told my sisters that the best thing they could have done was to buy houses with backyards, so they could have a garden. Fresh tomatoes are the greatest. Thank you for your response. Have a very good New Year, you and all your family.

I have a garden that has a lot of flowers and fruit trees.I used to grow vegetables but because of the unpredictable I find them growing difficult. But I have enough fruit trees that yield throughout the year and plenty of flowers to keep me happy.

...Hi allknowing, It seems that you are all knowing :o), in finding out how to enjoy life. Fruit trees, how wonderful, sounds like a mini paradise. Neat I do say. People who take the time, to cultivate the earth and tend to things until they bear fruit or vegetables, should be commended. It takes patience to do what you do, and I am sure you get a lot of satisfaction out of it. Thanks so much for your response. Take very good care.
