hello, everyone. Last week, i bought a box of oysters from supermarket. i shared them with my boyfriend. The result was: that evening i got so sick that i began to nausea and vomiting without stopping. i had to go to the hospital and stayed there for two days. Do you have such kind of experience, have you been ill after eating raw seafood?

Not from raw oysters, I have not had a whole lot of those maybe one at a time a few times. I have gotten sick from crab legs though. I was about 3 months pregnant and we went to the seafood restaurant in Texas and it was very hot and humid. At the hotel later on that night I was so sick I did not eat crab legs for the rest of the pregnancy and it was even hard to eat them for a while afterwards and they have been my favorite thing.

I've never eaten oysters, but a few years back a friend of mine did - at a posh restaurant. She and her family got exactly the same symptoms as you. They got better - she got worse. Turned out, the oysters had given them all hepatitis but for some reason my friend's family didn't show all the symptoms. Environmental health traced it to a worker at the restaurant who was a carrier. I remember the hoo-hah over it, cos this guy knew he was a carrier - but didn't disclose it to his bosses! Apparently, oysters are really great at picking up bugs and passing them on, even if they're fresh. This is especially true of oysters grown in a less than clean environment (e.g. near a sewage outlet) I do hope you get over your bout of sickness soon. I guess the rule should be - from the sea onto your plate, with no other vectors in between.

I do not eat oysters raw because to me it sounds gross, I like mine fried or insou. Also you are lucky, and you now know why they say to not eat raw oysters. It is just to easy for bacteria to grow on them. So glad that you are better.
