Wal-mart people

Are you part of the Wal-Mart People? - Wal-mart people and impressions against them

I dropped by Wal-Mart today to pick a few things before going home from work. I was in a rush, because I had to get the kids from the babysitter's. Anyway, as I was going out, I heard a group of teenagers just outside the store exit talking about wal-mart people. I did not want to be nosy, but I heard some disparraging remarks about wal-mart people. That they are fat and lazy and cheap! Almost made my skin crawl. I wanted to say something but I was already running late, and did not want to miss my kids. I don't consider myself fat, I work hard so I don't think I am lazy, but if being spendthrift or cheap by shopping at wal-mart makes me part of the 'wal-mart people', then I don't see anything wrong with that. Have you ever heard talk about so called wal-mart people? What do you think?

So were they hanging out waiting for their parents to emerge from the dreggs of Wal-mart with the other commom folk? My girl friends sister-in-law used to always make it a point of saying.."I don't do Wal-mart" Like the rest of us that do were shopping at the local dump. After her hubby got his hours cut at work, she quickly joined the rest of us in the quest to save money..it wasn't long before she realized saving a few bucks on the same items she was buying at those over-priced stores she usually shopped at..made wal-mart shoppers intelligent and wise. And every other up-scale adjective she now uses to describe herself. Blanket judgements are the narrow minded person's way of avoiding original thought. Sticks crossed for my wings bounce..game starts at 10:30..thanks for letting me work that in to your discussion.

Too bad! And to think it wasn't even a game. :( :( :( :( There seem to be a limit on emoticons, that's why 4 are generic.

Haha! I wanted to make an intelligent comment about your girlfriend's sister-in-law, but I think it is more fun to comment about the games tonight. I hope you're guys give it to the Kings tonight. It seems like LA is one of those teams that need to be overtaken just to make it to the playoff. Too bad about Homstrom. Is it 3-4 weeks that he'll be out. Are Cleary and Z back tonight. We got the surprisingly good dessert dogs tonight. Coach Tippet has really got the 'yotes playing a physical game.

Oh, bounce, if this wasn't so pathetic it would be hilarious. So Walmart shoppers are fat and lazy and cheap, are they? I almost feel sorry for those poor kids with their low self-esteem and lack of direction in life. Notice I said "almost" feel sorry for. When you encounter that kind of stupidity and ignorance, just let it roll off your back and keep on walking. Believe me, those kids have bigger problems than we Wal-Mart shoppers do! And, those problems are far bigger than fat, lazy and cheap! Off to Wal-Mart now hoping to catch a glimpse of fjaril in his tights, leggings, and mask.....

Thanks for your smart words! I know that when you're young you think the whole world revolves around you. I guess, these kids just need a bit of life to experience. Ok, if you don't see fjaril at Wal-mart, and instead you see a slightly overweight guy with mask and cape and bulges coming out of the tights, that would be me. And while you're there can you grab me more of those $1 caramel corn with nuts...

Teenagers today are so interested in being cool or in, that they don't realize the concept of budgeting or even working for their money. Because of the economy, a lot of the jobs that I had or my friends had when we were teens, are now being taken by people who have lost other jobs or are seniors trying to supplement their social security. Therefore, they are in the situation of "gimme" instead of earning the money themselves. Only then, will they realize the value. Now, my son and daughter-in-law prefer Target rather than Walmart, but after shopping at both stores, I find that you can get pretty much the same goods at both stores except Walmart is less expensive. As more and more people are faced with economic crisis in their own homes, they are not turning their noses up at Walmart any longer. I also shop at the dollar stores too, wherever I can get a good product at a bargain price. Now, I know that there are pictures of "Walmart People" that have been forwarded to me in emails. Actually, they are funny and pathetic to look at. People in halter tops and short shorts that weigh 300 pounds. The subject line of these emsils is called "The People of Walmart". I just recently received one of these so they are currently circling the internet. They may have been talking about these emails.

Thanks for responding surfette. I did hear one of my colleagues talking about these pictures circling the net. He said they were 300-pound people wearing funny clothes while shopping. But I never realized that they were taken at wal-mart. And I haven't seen these picture personally.

Just let that stuff run off your back like water running off a duck's back. Those teenagers just didn't have anything else to do. The one that said it was probably having some kind of issues with an employee and was trying to look big in front of his/her friends. A job is a job, and every job is important. Don't take it personal, just look at it through the eyes of a teenager that wasn't brought up to respect people and their roles in life. *When circumstances and feelings tell you otherwise, rely on what you know* I have been jobless for a year now. It is a blessing to have a job. Give all the glory to God and forget what those teenagers said.

I seriously can't handle being around teenagers. It takes everything I have not to haul off and let them have it verbally. They've gotten so much brattier. My next question is, if they don't like Wal Mart people, why were they anywhere near the store? That's a bit stupid of them.

I don't think kids have gotten brattier. I think adults just like to THINK they aren't as bratty as kids. In fact saying a blanket statement like "kids are brattier now" is sort of comparable to saying "people who shop at walmart are fat and lazy." It is making a generalization. I know some good kids. Some great kids. Kids that are certainly awesomer than I was when I was their age!

I shop at WalMart because it's cheaper than other stores, and when your family only has an income of 800 dollars a month, you have to watch every penny you spend, and budget until your fingers turn blue. I don't really take offense to that, because they are just being ignorant. When they grow up and have to pay for rent, utilities, food, car insurance, gas, and other necessities, they will most likely swallow their words [and their pride!] and start shopping cheaper. If they don't they will find themselves in debt and utterly miserable.

Thanks TickleMeBreathless. That is hard budgeting $800 a month. If it were just myself, I might make it. But if you have a family, your fingers would literally turn blue! Unless these teenagers have hidden wealth, or thrust funds, I'm sure they will swallow their own words. Thanks for dropping by.

People are people I would never , ever try to put Anyone into a box. there are three stores competing for people's money. KMart, Target and Walmart. It is disrespectful to say or even think anything about the people who shop at either of these stores. Me I prefer Target mostly but I do get to Kmart too,It is walking distance from work.walmart? It is a 30 minute bus ride and my walmart doesn't carry what my beloved Target does. with that said for me to look down on Walmart shoppers would not only be disrespectful, it would be Stupid! These teens are just showing how stupid they are and I hope someone some time beats some sense into them!

By the Grace of G-d my favorite supermarket is across the street from my Target. so every other week I do my shopping at the supermarket and then I go to Target. Target has some things cheaper and others are cheaper at the Giant, my beloved supermarket. My Target is huge and it carries some food and ever frozen food. The Walmart is across the street from yet another Giant. If I am remembering correctly . the Walmart has food too. I agree , getting what you want for a cheaper price is a great and smart thing. Just goes to show those teens Are idiots!

Thanks sarah. I like Target too! Actually, I feel smart if I shop at wal-mart or Target. Specially, if I get things on sale. If only, they carry everything I need like groceries, then it would be a one-stop-shop. Wal-mart supercenters are the best! Their the ones that have both grocery and department store. But like you, the supercenters are a ways away.

Hi bounce, Well they are teens and they haven't experienced enough of life to have a clue as to what they are talking about. I don't particularly care for walmart because of how they seem to move into areas and put other places out of business. Still, I do shop there at times because of the prices and I've got a daughter I'm raising and it is what I can afford. I'm far from fat and I am certainly not lazy. I work some pretty long hours. Cheap...yes...that I am. I have to be. These silly teens that were putting people down probably have no idea what it is like to pay rent, utilities and still eat and take care of kids etc. And furthermore, If they think that Walmart is such a bad place to shop, one would have to wonder why they are hanging out there to begin with. I would not be hanging out around a store that I had no intention on going into and maybe doing a little shopping around.

With the economy as it is, anyone who is not looking for bargains is either very wealthy or a kid who doesn't have to worry about bills which probably describes the teens in your story.

Thanks sid556. That seems to be the contention about most of the responders in these discussion. That we may not be fat, or lazy, but we're definitely cheap! And that there is nothing wrong with that. And one here said that we could actually be smart, for choosing stores were we could have savings.

The thing is, there mother's and father's are probably shoppers at wal*mart, and may have been inside the store as they were talking about it. I say they don't have jobs or if they do don't have responsibilities so don't know the reality of working to pay bills. In any case, I have always shopped at Wal*mart, was never a big fan of the mall. If it is wrong to be cheap, then I am wrong. Hubby works at wal*mart, and I am considering getting a second job at wal*mart.

Yes, I'm still considering applying. I've really got to talk to my mother in law. I'm just not sure if it's something I need to do now or wait on. I guess there's a lot of things hubby and I want, and well I'd like to know that I am secure in having a back up job so that when we have our own place, if I am terminated from the one job I have now, I'll have a backup and we won't have to worry about money as much. As you can tell, I plan ahead, I also worry!

Ha, well shamefully enough I can understand where the stereotype comes from. So don't take it personally; it wasn't a personal attack on you. It's just the stereotype that DOES exist about the majority of Wal-Mart customers.. Wal-Marts, in the city I live in (Minneapolis/St. Paul area of Minnesota) are ghetto. Extremely ghetto. It doesn't matter which one you go to, it doesn't matter if they're in a close suburb or right in the inner-city. And it doesn't make any sense, but the Targets, in the same exact area, only about a block away, are not ghetto. At all. Quite upstanding, strangely enough. Anyway, on with my story, a good portion of people in Wal-Marts in my area.. are.. (I really don't want to say "white trash" but it's the first thing that comes to mind) - have 8 kids, all of which are screaming, are wearing pajamas, and cussing at their ghetto boyfriends. And little ghetto wannabe teenagers hang out in Wal-Marts (although I never see them hang out in Targets. What's up with that?) This could be where this stereotype comes from. But stereotypes.. are just.. stereotypes. You can't generalize that everyone who goes to Wal-Mart is fat, ghetto, and white trash..Because it's simply not the truth, is it? Within about 2 minutes of entering Wal-Mart I'm sure I could point out several thinner, non-ghetto "Target" people. (LOL, here's some fuel for your next discussion.. TARGET PEOPLE!!) Anyways, teenagers will be teenagers. You can't live with 'em.. and umm.. You can't live with 'em.. Ha.

Interesting point maezee! I have never put Wal-Mart and white trash together. I would try to be observant the next time I go to the Wal-Mart near my house. Once in a while I do see some wearing pajamas inside the store, but I'll try to see if some of them throw cusses to their ghetto boyfriends.

I've heard similar things about other stores but consider the source! A bunch of teenagers who aren't the ones paying the bills, have very limited life experience and who are just repeating something they've heard someone else say. What they are really saying is "look at the POOR people, they are lesser beings" and that is really disgusting. It seems it is okay to disparage the poor - or those they perceive as poor - as a social group. It's just snobbery, classism and the weird thing is it often comes from those barely removed from the situations they sneer at. I doubt those were genuinely rich kids!

Please don't let some stupid children bother you like this. This is a typical teenage kind of thing. They have no idea what it is like to struggle everyday trying to make ends meet. Walmart is such a HUGE monopoly that all kinds of people shop there now. I think in the past there was a sterotype attached to people that shop at Walmart but these days NO WAY. Everybody is looking for a deal! I am sorry that you heard that but I am glad that you did not waste your time or breath with this kind of nonsense! I think anyone that would make a remark like that is obviously lacking tact and class and most certainly fits into the category of ignorant!

Okay, that's pathetic. Why the heck were they hanging out in front of the store anyway? I bet they were just in there themselves yet they have the gall to talk trash about people who shop there. If that was the case, wouldn't they be part of this "wal-mart people" thing too. They obviously were not thinking before they decided to open their mouths. Most of those kids probably don't even know the concept of working to earn their money. They're probably still leeching off of their parents. That's why they could afford to splurge money.

Hi bounce, I did this discussion not too long ago when I came across the comments of a rather foul mylotter and the way he spoke of those who shopped there in his typically disparaging fashion. Of course myself I have never seen a walmart, let alone shopped in one, as we don't have them, but the many responses I got all made me wish I had a walmart to shop in for good value under one roof.

Hi thea. Sorry if I stole a little bit of your thunder here. I didn't realize this discussion was already raised. To be honest, I was still hot under the collar when I raised the discussion, that I did not bother checking if there were similar ones. But you are right that Wal-mart does offer good value in one roof! Well, except most groceries though, as the one near my house is not the supercenter kind.

I know how that goes. Personally I haven't heard any remarks about Wal-Mart spsifically, but I've heard it about other places. If I wouldn't get arrested for slaping those type of people I would have probably slapped the living daylights out of them. Of course if its kids, they are going to be well, kids and little can be said or done about their behavior. Just try not to let it bother you, because you'll be the one arrested or in trouble.

You know teenagers, they have this attitude when they think they are invincible...that they are the super people who knows anything and everything. It's part of the adolescent stage where they have the certain agression to flaunt and flair on to the world. But when they grow up their perception will be different and for sure they'll be shopping in Wal-Mart too. Don't you agree? Bounce58, don't listen to these comments. These people are only teenagers and sometimes they still don't know what they are saying. Aside from that, I myself is a frequent Wal-Mart shopper when I'm in vacation in the US so I guess there's nothing wrong with it. THe best thing is you get a good deal out of the product you purchase. Wal-Mart have the best quality and low price for practically everything from food to anything. Don't worry about it bounce58, enjoy your shopping at Wal-Mart. Happy mylotting.
