i bought a second hand glass table from ebay,it was imaculate,no scratches or anything, but over the last few weeks scratches keep appearing on it,some big some small,we only use the table to eat at,so it's only used for about an hour a day,i don't know how the scratches are getting there,i've rubbed my hand on the bottom of everything that goes on the table to see if the item has any sharp edges which would make the scratches, they don't,we don't where watches or rings, school bags are kept in the hallway, keys are kept hanging up,,,so what could be causing the scratches, any ideas are welcomed

they are too deep and long to be covered with anything, there's more appearing all the time,i thought it was the cats but the scratches are too straight and not close to each other, unless my cats are extremely clever and use 1 claw not all of them to scratch my table

First thing on my mind is the glass top was scratched badly before you bought it.
The previous owners used a scratch cream of sorts is my guess.
Glass tops are usually not all that easy to scratch so I'd see about sending it back and getting your money back.
I've done that with a computer on ebay and had good luck but had to pay postage.
Not sure how much you paid for the table, but if it wasnt' much, cover the table use it and find a nicer table elsewhere.

the table was a bargin,6 seater with 6 high back chairs for £55,i'm annoyed bout the scratches but i don't mind too much coz if it gets too bad i'll just get a nice table cloth to cover it

I'm not acquainted with your money values. I am used to USA monies, but if you got a bargain, a nice table cloth could do wonders.
So could scratch cream--------------
I AM in favor of table clothes tho and they can be washed and look formal or informal, but anything country I like best.
YOu have your thinking cap on, I am proud of you :)

I wonder if it had been treated with some kind of a filler and the scratches were already there, just camouflaged. Your cleaning on a day to day basis has removed this protective treatment. This is only a guess.

I would have said a cat as they seem to be able to scratch glass with their claws.I used to have glass cooffee tables and i had a cat who used to jump up on one and that always had new scratches appearing on it as the cat used to sit on it and clean itself as well as play as it could see its own reflection.

Glass can be very sensitive as you see. You might try using place mats under plates when you eat. That will ensure that items won't scratch the glass. Just a little rub with a harder substance will sratch the surface. Just protect it a little better during meals and it should stop any more scratches from occuring.

If you are sure that you are not responsible for creating them, then they must have been there already, visible to you only now. The sellers must have camouflaged them somehow!! You could contact them and talk about it.

If this has happened in a short period of time may be you could capitalise on that. Just a suggestion.

hi doormouse the people who sold it were sneaky , and filled in the scratches with glass filler so when you cleaned it the filler has gradually disappeared and the scratches are now showing. you really should file a complaint with ebay as they would want to know about something like that. I mean of course you can cover it with a table cloth but should you not have got something that really looked immaculate and really was immaculate? I think at the least they should adjust what they charged you. do tell ebay about this.
