Do You Go Out When The Weather Is Bad?

Many people all over the world it seems and not just here in the US are undergoing unusually cold, frigid and/or snowy weather...the exception being maybe Australia. Here where I live for instance we've been in a pretty deep freeze with wind chill factors to make it feel like in the single digits or even below zero temperatures. This kind of weather is the kind you just want to stay in bed to stay warm, maybe cuddle up and catch up on reading some books and if you have pets have them share the bed with you (hey they're smart..they want to stay warm too). But what can I say? Duty calls. As cold as it was today, I had to go out. I had stayed home two days in a row and that's usually my limit of staying home before going completely daft. Also, I had to do grocery shopping, especially to stock up on cat food for my "babies"---so when I went out (and believe me I didn't want to) I was bundled up like Nanook of the North....as that saying in that movie "A Christmas Story" where the kid, Raplhie, is commenting about how his mother wraps up his younger brother, Randy, to make him look like a tick that is about to burst--uh, well that's how I was dressed today when I went out, but heck it did keep me warm. Anyway, when the weather is bad, and it doesn't necessarily mean that it has to be cold, frigid, or snowy weather, but monsoon type rain, horrible heat, whatever...do you go out or do you say the heck with it and are smart enough to stay home? What's the worse kind of weather you've been out in? Did you survive or did you want to kick yourself wishing you had stayed home?

Hi there Pye from sunny Italy - NOT! We have had more snow this year than the past winters with many places blocked in and more snow on the way. When it snows I don't walk or drive anywhere. I get lifts or even a taxi to work and two weeks ago I had to stay at work overnight becuase it was too bad to get home. It comes in handy that I work in an hotel lol. I shall have to dosome shopping soon though because the food will start running out but I shall go for as long as I can with out going shopping if the snow is still on the ground as I slip. The last thing I want is to fall over and break something

Pye, do you happen to have bunions? I am thinking that having my bunion corrected will help my ankle, knee and back pain. I will, of course, continue with some of the natural healing supplements as well.

You're more in the northern area of Italy, right? But it seems I'm hearing a lot of areas of Europe are hit with cold, cold weather and snow that normally doesn't see much of it...heck here in Texas it's been snowing--never recall that in all my life LOL--that was convenient that you work in a hotel--did they give you a room or anything to be comfortable in? I have to be careful walking due to my joint and foot pain so I'm always hesitant about walking on snowy or icy streets myself

Hey girl...I usually don't mind going out cept when it's extremely hot or it's very cold with sleet coming down and roads are filled with ice. But, I have no choice in the matter so I just add/subtract layers as I see fit or jump in the pool right before heading out to keep cool longer. I went shopping yesterday and it wasn't too bad out. Just had on a t-shirt and my normal black pull-over, not to mention my hiking boots and I'm good to go. Glad to hear your furbabies have plenty to eat and hope you do as well. Stay warm, Pye!!

walking on the snow - daily walk
Come over to Chicago, we have this kind of winter every single year. I used to walk every day with my dogs, regardless of weather, but my dogs are getting older and when is very cold, they just go on the yard. Yesterday and today was very nice and only 18F (compared to feels like -30F around New Year), almost summer..., so we decided to take longer walk....

I think we were spoiled here last winter as it was a very usually mild one--days in the 50s and 60s--guess we're making up for it now. And yes, been hearing how cold it is in the windy city of Chicago

If I don't have to go out I won't. If I need to, I will. I prefer however staying in if it's badly snowing. If it's cold, of course I hate going out but I will. I'll just bundle up in several coats and head outside.

Believe me there are days I'd rather stay home if the weather is really lousy and just stay in bed, but sometimes I have no choice...especially when it comes to making sure my kitties have enough food...LOL..hope they appreciate it

Hi pye. I actually prefer to stay home when the weather is bad, but sometimes I find myself going out in it anyway. LOL What can I say, I'm the one that runs the errands in the family. One time I had been at the grocery store when an unexpected hail storm came along. After putting the groceries in my car, I contemplated as to whether I should wait it out for it to quit or just brave it and drive home. I waited a little bit, but as it wasn't letting up I decided to drive home. That was fun, especially with me not having any experience driving in this kind of weather. As everything was covered in hail I couldn't see where the lanes were on the road (it was three lanes in one direction). And when I made a U-turn I fishtailed. That was a mistake, but fortunately no one was next to me, otherwise I probably would have creamed right into them. I somehow made it home safe and sound the rest of the way home. I'm glad I don't live where it snows or I'd be crashing into everything, I'm sure! LOL The last time was a few months back. A thunderstorm had been approaching. My husband asked me to run up to get some food and I agreed to go. I ended up driving towards the storm as that was the direction I had to go. I saw some beautiful, but scary looking, streaks of light in the sky that night. I kind of wish that I had my camera on me. LOL Well, on the drive home I was racing the storm as it was right behind me. At one point I was worried that a bolt of lightning would strike next to me, but that never happened. By the time I got to the house the storm had caught up with me. Once I was inside I felt better that I wasn't out in it any longer. LOL I definitely wanted to kick myself with the first incident. Although I couldn't predict it, I wish I would have stayed home that day. The second one, well, not so much. I kind of liked it, even if it was scary! LOL Happy mylotting!

Oh yeah, and with the last vehicle I had I was always kicking myself for going out in hot weather as it didn't have air conditioning. And with it getting into the triple digits during the summer it was pure torture driving that thing around town. LOL What was even worse was when the darn thing started having problems. Like the time I needed a jump for it. And with it being hot out that day I was kicking myself big time for not staying home. But on the plus side at least I was smart enough for not bringing either of my kids with me. Sheesh! LOL

It did! I don't like driving in hail at all! Same goes for heavy rain. I'd much rather stay home any day then go out in weather like that! LOL I hope you live close enough to the store so that you don't have to walk far! Stay dry!

Wow I would have thought the first incident would have scared you more than that second one. I've been caught in a few humdingers of rainstorms...the kind that are so heavy one gets soaked to the skin in five minutes and you have to realize I don't drive. I too say, while grocery shopping think of just staying in the store rather than wait it out but decide to walk home since I would never know how long I would have to wait it out.

oh this happened years back when I was probably seventeen. I went shopping with my parents in a snow storm from Newell to Rapid city South Dakota, about thirty miles distance. It was snowing heavily and as my sister had a bad cold and so did my grandpa he baby sat my little sister while we drove to Rapid. Teh storm seemed to get worse. We did our shopping ate out and decided to hurry back home. we were about two thirds of the way nome when the wind started blizzArding and the snow was falling so heavily You could not see more than a foot ahead of the car. well my mom and I put on the extra overalls we had bought for grandpa and got out to guide my dad in the storm, but then we hit a humongous snow drift and that was it. bu t God was looking out for us. off aways shone a lamp which we could barely see in the blinding snow but we kept walking towards this faint glow then my dad smiled. its that school house we always comment on , he said, and the teacher must be snowed in. her car was buried under five feet of snow. She took us in and fed us hot chicken soup and grilled cheese sandwiches and hot coffee. Just as we finished eating someone knocked on the door, it was Butch Brennaman a man who ran the best garage service in Newell, he had been sent by my worried grandpa to find us,he had a tow truck with heavy tires and chains and all and he towed us the rest of the way to our farm. we were so glad to be home in our nice warm comfy farmhouse and grandpa and sister Mary were tickled that we were alright as the roads were officially closed and no traffic at all. what a d ay it was almost eleven in the evening when we got into our home.So I have been well acquainted with cold weather and snowing and blizzards too.

I am staying in this time, because of the foot surgery. Usually I have to work, regardless of the weather. I dislike the very cold with biting wind weather, but I equally dislike temperatures over 100 with no breeze. Most of the other I can handle okay. I know that layers upon layers are quite warm. So are two cats on the recliner holding me down. I am supposed to have my foot up at about waist level as much as possible so I am on my heated recliner and two of my three cats are holding me down.

Furbabies DO make great warmers don't they? Thankfully while cold, there was no real wind so not very bone-chilling..I was out the other day when it was "warmer" yet the wind was horrible and not only made it feel colder but honestly, I nearly blew away!

Just saw your other comment Nope, no bunions. I'm actually making an investigation into my prescription history..my pharmacist promised to look it up for me and give me the list. It had to do with a foot doc that gave me a prescription for an antibiotic...didn't think anything of it at the time...but now there are several with severe warnings about NOT taking with joint pain which at the time was mild for me--it just seems ever since I took a med, my symptoms have nearly crippled me...if I find out that's the case can we say.....lawsuit?

OF course I survived wouldnt be here to talk about it lololololo Yup we was in Ws. in 91 for the winter and I worked down the road from where we lived. Was at work and the lights went out we had to write the orders for the puters were down and when I went to go home it was snowing so bad I barely could see my car. ANd several times we wrapped all up and waddled to the bar across the street to get out of the house. and I mean waddle for there was ice under the snow. And they piled the snow up in the middle of the road and you couldnt see the other side till ya got to were ya had to turn then you peeked out to make sure another car was coming from the other way. Then we left there to go to Utah for Christmas with the kids we didnt get 50 miles before we had to stop in a motel for the rest of the dy and night for ice on the roads we crept along abou 5 miles an hour to get to that next exit was times I was sure we were sliding off the road.

Yeah it's not so much the snow that can be a real hazard but the ice. Even walking on the streets here one has to be careful unless one was to take a nasty tumble and fall on one's...uh you know Oh and yes, just love it when the streets are plowed of snow and they create mountains of it..NOT

Where I am, here in Canada, the weather has been unusually freezy these weeks. I go out only to go to work. Over the weekends, I just stay home and stay cuddled up. I have to keep a stock of food in my refrigerator, just microwave and that's it. Yes, It is really frustrating and depressive when the weather gets this severe. I am just waiting for the Spring time now, to go up the Rockies and enjoy !

Yea, when you expose yourself to the elements, the downside is you might even get sick (touch wood ). So I think it is best to avoid going out unless you really have to (like for work) if the weather is really bad.

Hey pye! I hope you were able to survive this miserable winter weather that we are having right now! I hate it so much too, but there are just some times that I too have to venture out in it! I used to be worried that I would look stupid all bundled up and such, but not anymore! It's all about trying to stay warm! I don't care what I look like anymore! I don't care if you can't see my skin, that's the point! I have walked out my front door and wanted to go back in many times, but I have things to do just like everyone else and that's life! So, I just try to deal with the weather the best I can, walk as fast as I can, which all bundled up is even slower and get back home as soon as possible!

We've been having some of that freezing weather here in Oklahoma too. I don't think it's been above freezing for several days, with many of them not getting out of the teens...for the highs. In weather like that, I try not to go out other than to walk the dogs. Good time to make soups, chili and lasagna. I wish I could bottle up a few of these days to use during the summer when it's just too hot to do anything. Probably the worst weather I was out in was on a trip to Freeport Maine to go to LL Bean. On the return trip to Western Mass, what was forcast to be 'scattered snow showers' quickly turned into a blizzard. Most of way back the interstate speed was about 25 miles per hour. What scared me more than the snow was looking in my rear view mirror and seeing some idiot barreling towards me at a high rate of speed. I was so afraid they'd spin out and take me with them, and I had my son with me who was only 11 at the time. Thankfully there were very few accidents on the way home, other than the 'speed demons' who, sooner or later, we saw in the snowbanks off the side of the road. A 4 hour trip home ended up taking 10.

Yeah it would be great to "bottle" up days like this and save for those horrible hot days in the summer I've been making a lot beef stews lately..nothing like it on a cold day..might make chili soon since that would be perfect as well. I just love it when the weathermen are wrong....they say light snow and it's a blizzard..or the opposite, they forecast a horrible storm and then nothing happens

Soups and stews! You got that right! I've made stuffed pepper soup, 15-bean soup, Canadian pea soup and one that I threw a bit of everything into. Family got tired of soups finally, so tonight I made a lasagna with roasted veggies and a vodka cream sauce. If it doesn't warm up soon, none of us will be able to fit through the door to go out....

I have been staying in most of the time during this very cold spell here in the UK. With temperatures way below zero (minus 5 celcius) there is ice everywhere. Only the main routes are getting treated with grit, so it is very slippery out there. However, I have had to go out because we were in need of some food, but I found that not many people were out, and those that were, were quickly going back home again. I'm waiting for summer! - Derek

I work outside so I don't have much choice. In fact, I work outside during the hottest days of summer (stagehand at an outdoor venue) and during the coldest nights of winter (commercial exterior Christmas decorating -- we do those 10' wreaths on buildings, those 30' trees, and miles of lights and garland at office buildings and shopping centers). For the Christmas job, we work during the night like elves, because businesses are closed and people are not in the way. Right now, we're doing tear-down. Holidays are over and everything has to come down. Last week, temps were in the 20s and wind chill in the single digits and we were out there. It was BRUTAL! One night, it snowed on us, but we were all commenting how warm it was. No wind and the temperatures reached the 30s! Lots of layers, Under Armour, PolarTec, and the right frame of mind go a long way. You even let yourself think you're cold, you're done for. Given a choice, I can tolerate the heat and high humidity of summer better than I can the arctic, raw cold of this winter.

It's funny when it's actually snowing for some reason it doesn't feel as cold. And sometimes when it IS cold as long as there isn't any wind I don't mind it as much. I'm the opposite of you though, I can't tolerate heat or humidity well
