Using the ofice computer for job search?

January 10, 2010 2:11pm CST
A colleague was caught the other day for using his office computer to search for another job! We are going through some restructuring and we all could understand that he didn't feel save in his current job and was looking for alternatives. But using the office computer - in times where we know that employees have a right to check our online movements at work - certainly wasn't his best idea ever as he is in quite a bit of trouble now for misusing the office computer for private use. Would you ever do that? Or do you think it is too risky, too cheeky or just morally wrong?

Since your company is undergoing some kind of restructuring, what your colleague did was indirectly telling management to restructure his seat as well - from inside the office building to somewhere outside the company. Now that he is caught, I hope he is forgiven for the "misdeed" he had done. Of course, your colleague is merely preparing himself for whatever mishap that may happen unknown - the possibility of being replaced or disposed off. But if he were to put himself in his employer's shoes, would he be able to condone such conduct from his employee, by using the company's computer and network to search for jobs? He could have done his job-hunting at home. And I think it's perfectly OK for him to receive calls from his future employer(s) while at work to discuss about the new job(s). That will be more discreet, agree?

Well said. That's not what he wanted to achieve of course, but sometimes fear makes blind. Luckily for him he got off with a telling off and a verbal warning (meaning there won't be a pay increase or bonus - but none of us is likely to get that in the moment anyway!). Phone calls from potential employers? You don't really have a choice. You need to speak to them at some point. But to keep them discreet can be quite difficult.

I wouldn't do it. I would be too afraid of getting caught. But I have to say L.O.L. Where I used to work a dew years ago we were all in a small room and this girl had a newspaper and it was called Employment Guide and it was open to where eveyone could see it and the boss said newsflash! You can't come to work here and have an employ

L.O.L. It was so funny that day!

:-) That was pretty obvious! Not the brightest thing to do neither!

Wow I think this was a bit petty on the part of employers ,I mean its not like he was using the computers to do his business or selling company equipment or trade secrets ,he was just looking a job .He can still do that outside the company.I think they are looking for an excuse to get rid of him and maybe thats why he was looking for a job

Nah, they kept him on. Doing different jobs whilst at work is actually illegal. Looking for a job isn't, you're right. But it was still pretty insulting against the employer - don't you think? Using work time you are paid for to find another job? It should be done in your own time with your own equipment.

Actually, we are doing the same thing in our office. But we are different from him because we are on the social networking sites. But I think he has his reasons. At these times of financial crisis, I think each of us here are looking for a more rewarding careers. Each of us would like to be secured enough when in comes to our financial obligations in life, and that is why we are doing that silly moves. Hope he will try to face the consequences of his moves. It is one actually of our fears in our office if we will be quote, especially that we try to change IPs in order to access the web.

Really? Our office blocked all social networking sites to avoid misuse. I think many companies do that now. You try to change IPs? Be careful - if your managers find out it is very clear that you knew what you did was wrong. You could get in quite a bit of trouble.

It is really not proper to use the company's computer for personal use, more so for job hunting... Why am I laughing??? Because I am also guilty of that too hehehehe! I even printed my resume to my previous job... It is good that nobody saw me for I have my own table and printer... But that is really improper and certainly against good values... It is risky and not the best thing to do...

Actually there is no need to ran because the printer is just beside me... But yes, I did get it asap and put it in an envelope so that nobody would see it... And guess what! I used company's envelope too... I am very bad!!!!
11 Jan 10
True. I can imagine that you ran to that printer very quickly to grab your resume!

I would not want to take the risk. I understand why your colleague is looking for a job since he is scared. With the economy being bad and jobs being hard to find I can understand how he feels. I have not been able to find work at all since graduating college. My husband is only working part-time which has been a burden for us. I think he should have looked for work outside the job.

I agree. Especially in the current economy I wouln't want to take the risk to get fired for something like that.

It is never fair to use your time at work for anything accept what your employer is paying you to do. I would bet he's on the short list if they are downsizing.
11 Jan 10
Well, I wouldn't be surprised neither if he is. Many people at work have a quick look on the internet for their emails or so and it is accepted. But looking for a job is just pushing it a bit far.

I think it is not good to use office computer because you are paid by the company to work for the assign job unless you used it for searching a new one during break time.
11 Jan 10
Even during breaktime I don't think it is particularly fair on the company though. It is their equipment and internet line after all. And it must have been hurtful for the manager to walk past and see the job adverts.

Well do you have morals? And if you do, then wouldn't you already have an opinion? Why did not you state it? I bet that person had an opinion and was not just a victim of stupidity. I think that work is stressful. Um. Especially if one has the likeness of being watched one is asked to work more promptly and accuratley than normal. What really is normal is humans working together. Perhaps it is the best thing for him to be himself. And for you to be yourself.
11 Jan 10
Yes, I have an opinion - but I wanted yours! If you want to know mine: I can understand him as he was worried to lose his job and not have a new one to go to, but I think it was very naive and dangerous and not fair on the company. I would not be impressed if I'd caught one of my staff.

I admit that I did that in one of my previous jobs, as they would make me spend 8 hours a day doing absolutely nothing, so I wanted to find another job as soon as possible. In other of my previous jobs a workmate was caught, but he was just scolded and nothing else.
11 Jan 10
Sometimes you are lucky. I hope you found a good job after taking that risk.

No No...what he did..i would never like to do that at least at my workplace... why me to take such risk and whether company is thinking to take me out or not but such activity company will be sure to take a person out... Well i don't think that he did the right thing as he was at his office and he had to take care of matter that he is getting paid for working there and he is searching for the another job there...Too risky work he did... but i would never like to take such a chance...
11 Jan 10
Absolutely true. He took a big risk and he was lucky they didn't make him 'pay for it'.

Unless the company has said you may use their computer for personal reasons, then this is basically stealing. If they have said you can use it for your own interests, then what you do is none of their business as long as it is legal.
11 Jan 10
Strong view. We are allowed occasional private usage but certain sites such as facebook or illegal sites are a no-no. The allowed sites are really all that clear but jobsites just must feel like taking the mickey.

He probably feels he will be axed from that company and he probably does not have a computer at home, so he is sort of panicking. What he did was wrong, but we can't totally blame him since he probably could not afford to be jobless, so he is in panic mode in case the company fires him. I think he knows that he won't be keeping his job in that company anyway, but that's pathetic.
11 Jan 10
Yes, that's the reason. He doesn't have a computer. And you are absolutely right - he was worried and probably in panic mode. But I'd rather go to a friends house or an internet cafe than doing this in the office.
