Audio books or traditional books?

January 13, 2010 1:44pm CST
I love reading. I love the feeling of a book in my hand. I love the sound of turning the page. I love hearing the voices and sounds in my own head. But audio books are increasingly popular. Can they replace traditional books? Not for me. I get bored listening to the same, often monotone voice. I much rather read myself. Do you like audio books? Or prefer traditional books.

I prefer audio books because I can continue with whatever else I'm doing while listening to the story. The books that I've listened to have not been read in a monotone.

I'm usually just sewing.

Don't you find though they you get distracted with the other things you do and miss parts of the book?

I prefer traditional books, wherein I am the oone reading the book. It's easy for me to understand if I am the one reading, not someone else reading for me. Audio books are like listening to your teachers in class, might as well just listen during classes. Audio books somewhat bore me.

Yes, me too. But I can see their advantage, e.g. listening to it in the car or in the gym. Still, I'm not convinced.

I love them both and a well read book shouldn't be a monotone, the pro books are really well done with actors reading them - very good and most can do a lot of voices, I forget that I'm only listening to one person when I listen to Jim Dale read the Potter books.

I haven't listened to those, but the books I tried where monotone. I was diasappointed, but maybe just unlucky.

I prefer traditional books, as well. It's a bit harder for me to pay attention to an audio book, and at least when I'm reading I can go back and reread something I may have overlooked or missed if I zoned out. I have started listening to audio books some, though, but that's only because I happened to find audio versions of books I need to read for class. I have a long drive to school, so if I don't have time to finish the reading I can just listen to it since I obviously can't read while driving down the road. I wish I could, though.

That's quite useful then. Just make sure they are unabridged versions. When I was studying I once recorded my notes and listened to them on my IPod whilst being in the job. It was weird!

Audio books can be boring and difficult to understand at times, especially if you're encountering new terminologies. Its much better to read a book than to have someone read it for you monotonously.

I feel the same. The ones I read were rather monotonously. But I've been told I've just been unlucky!

i still go for the traditional books since it helps me broaden my vocabulary.

True, seeing the words written down makes it easier to build a vocabulary.

I like a traditional book, that way I can pick it us when I only have ten minuets and put it down, when I return to it I can pick it up exactly where I left off.

True, audio books are not so suitable for short times available.

When I younger I sometimes borrowed audio books at the library, and I liked listening to them while I was doing something else. I haven't used audio books for years though, and just like you I prefer to read the books myself instead of listening to an audio book. It is hard to find good audio books at my local library, and there are few books to choose from compared to traditional books, that is another reason why I prefer to read the books myself. Maybe I could find some audio books online, but I am not really interested, because I prefer to hold the books in my hand.

I only recently disovered audio books. A colleague says she listens to them whilst commuting. I only ocassionally listen to one when I can't sleep.

I can read faster than whoever they have reading the book out loud. Audio books will not replace traditional books for me, either. My Mom listens to audio books when she goes for her afternoon walk. I think that maybe I'd like to listen to audio books instead of music when I finally get my own car. That's one of the great things about audio books. It's hands-free and you can listen if you can't hold the book in front of you and read. But I'll always still read actual books. I love reading at my own fast pace.

They are useful if you do them together with something else, just like your mom is walking or in the gym. I'd usually listen to music though in those cases.

No way, will you ever get me to listen to a audio book. I mean really, people, how will you ever be able to learn anything if you do not read. I love my books and i am addicted to reading, so to speak. I think that audio reading only makes people lazy. Why do you have a nice and big sofa or a very big and comfortable bed? It is used for reading, of course. DA

Well, some people do both. Reading at home, audio books in the car. But I am like you - addicted to reading! LOL

I prefer traditional books. Because I love reading and I love the possiblity to gave to the world the respective figure like I imagine!!!! And I like more take the book in my hands and feel its pages passing in my hands, and fell words under my fingers!!! I love feel new book's smell!!!! I love to imagine how many time the autor needs to write that!!! And if he writes in a computer or using a pen!!!! I love the possiblity to imagine the character's voice during the dialogs and imagine the locutor's voice!!!! Because of this I prefer traditional books!!!!!!!

Exactly. You can imagine the characters better than if you listen to someone.

I personally think they both have there place. I like books cause they allow me to escape reality for a bit. Also the same reason I like sci-fi and fantasy TV (anything fake). If I have time to read I love reading, however if I on the road a good audio book can allow me to relax during the drive. Some times radio music or CDs just do not cut it for me.

They definitively have their place. I know people listening to them whilst driving. I prefer listening to music as I'd be annoyed if I have to interrupt at an unsuitable place just because I arrived!
