Tomorrow is solar eclipse. In our country, some people believe that a pregnant lady ought not to go out during eclipse be it lunar or solar. It is believed that the child would be handicapped or deformed .In this forum we have so many people from different countries and if this is a scientifically proven fact then it must be universal. Please tell me what you know about this dear friends! THanks for sharing.

ummm no that is not rue at all. It stll amazes me what people make up and others beleive. If that really were true think of how many pregnat mothers went out and knew nothing about this. Then think of how many people in the world would be deformed or handicapped. On another note I have a magic rock that is said to keep away ghosts. It must be rue because there arwe no ghosts here. lol

That was a great response and I do agree that what is scientifically true for one is true worldwide.

Yes I also hear from the old people at home about the effects a preagnant lady will undergo regarding her new born if she exposes herself during the eclipse .It is said that she should be in a room shut away completely from the sun rays to have a child free from all deformities .I dont know how far it is true but nobody would like to take a risk .So we follow.

Most scientists say that as long as we do not look directly at the eclipse it is safe to go out, but honestly, my personal view is why take a chance. I have noticed that during an eclipse it is like when the moon is full, in that some people act crazier than usual. I do not think there is any scientific evidence that a child would be deformed, but the mother could damage her own eyesight if she does not protect it. It is not enough just to wear sunglasses. Anyone who looks at a solar eclipse needs to have proper eye protection. Again, my view is why take a chance?

Yes Drannh! Why take a chance?-It is definite that eyesight would get damaged if we go out without proper protection.

This is the first time I have ever heard such a thing...If it is superstition I don’t believe it but if there is a plausible scientific explanation then I would take notice. Most people know that one should not look directly at an eclipse because it will cause eye damage regardless of pregnancy. Have there been many cases of babies born with handicaps because the mother was exposed to an eclipse? I think the brain is a very powerful tool and if one was to believe something like that it may well manifest...

That is what I too believe Paula! If the mother is slightly unsure or has a trace of doubt whether this might be true, then it is better for her to be safe.Otherwise it will disturb her peace of mind and this may have an adverse effect on the child.

Hi kala....I have heard many myths related to the solar eclipse ,and they are all nothing but nonsense.....This myth about the off springs of a pregnant woman getting deformed children,,really takes the cake......I dont see what is the connection between the two phenomenon.......All such references has to be simply dismissed.......There is no logical or scientific evidence to prove such beliefs......

I too was reading [on the net]thta this is all a myth . On television also they were talking about thsi.Ultimately it would depend on the individual [the pregnant girl] to believe and stay indoors or go out if it is her normal routine.

In our Hindu households normally it is believed thtait is a dvisable for the young expectant mother to stay indoors. However, opinions do differ here within our own selves and ultimately it becomes a matter of individual choice.

I'm afraid I would put all this type of thing down to superstitious nonsense. However, I would add that a woman's mental and emotional health have a very great effect on the unborn child's welfare. Therefore, if a pregnant woman really believed in such a superstition it COULD have a detrimental effect. I would liken it to other superstitions. For instance, someone who is afraid of the number thirteen, believing it to bring bad luck, would be EXPECTING bad luck if that number was somehow involved in the day and the mental attitude would lead to something bad happening - not because of the number thirteen, but because of the person's affected reactions.

Wonderfully written! I wholehearttedly agree that emotional state of mind does have an effect on the child and if the mother believes such things it may be better for her to follow it instead of going against it , brood and fret and keep thinking over it.THat itself may cause harm. And the deep conviction does have a positive effect on us .SImilarly, people get cured out of deep convictions.

Logically I dont see any reason for this. But yeah from very old times there is saying about various effects of solar eclipse that are ill. So why try it on ourselves . Let the research tell the truth? Right?

Exactly.I too feel that someone may come out with some scientific proofs.ASVandana pointed out there may some effect in trying it out on rats.

This is news to me. I have not heard of any likelihood that the child will be deformed during the eclipse. Maybe it is just coincidence that a child is born abnormal and people blame it on the eclipse.

I too have no idea Zandi but as someone had written 'I know this is all superstition but what does it cost to touch wood?' sometimes we just follow things because elders in our family ask us to.THen instead of hurting their feelings and the fear that in the event of something happening due to some cause or another but feeling guilty for having disreagrded some simple suggestions , we tend to follow some simple rules.

I think it is true to some extent because I strongly believe in the views of our ancestors who were able to research astronomical secrets with the help of thier "inner vision". Each planet is emitting its own rays that fall on us all the 24 hours, you can't see them though. You can't feel them either except the rays of the Sun. It may affect the baby inside womb to some extent so better a pregnant lady be at home on that day.

I also believe in what ancestors say and tempering it with my own rationale I do follow some practices to my limited capacity with minor adjustments and compromises.Like some one said" what does it cost to 'touch wood' after all?' THanks for sharing your view point.I felt that this being a universal phenomenon we can get diveerse views .

I want to add that a Lunar eclipse may affect the brain of the baby while the solar may affect the other parts of the baby (basically the health).

Hi kala, I do believe that in someway what happens amongst celestial bodies like sun and moon does affect us, as we do feel heat though the sun is so far from us, and moon and tide do have some relationship. Our ancestors must have had some knowledge about it, but the exact reasoning is lost to us. But look at it the other way. The probability of getting a perfect child is indeed very rare - ask any gynecologist. Some deformity is always present, some are visible physically, while others are internal. What I am trying to say is, presence of eclipse is not necessary for getting a deformed baby. It may, however, be one of the causes of getting deformed baby. We could confirm if it is indeed so by looking at some cat or dog that is pregnant, and then checking whether they are indeed giving birth to deformed young ones! If not, we would know whether there are other conditions as well, which along with eclipse result in such deformities.

Well! i am sure someone would come out with scientific explanations whether this is a myth or real ; however, in my own house there are divergent view points--my motherinlaw never believed in this while some old grandmothers did believe in thIS.Whether it is real or not , finally people do what their heart tells them and just place their faith in GOd.

It's an old belief and it has been believed also in our country. I didn't know anything about that belief before. In 1990, I was seven month heavy with my youngest child, a solar eclipse also did happen, I even went to the rooftop of our building to have a better view of the eclipse. An officemate told me about that belief after I have seen the eclipse, that made worried till the day I deliver my baby. Luckily, nothing has happened on my baby and she is as normal as she can be. I don't know if there's a truth on that belief or whether it has been proven or not, though I can't see the relation. However, it depends on the pregnant lady if she will believe that.

Great! This is precisely why I started this discussion. So, nothing has happened to your child and people can take heart from this. However, personally, I would still not defy the rule imposed by our ancestors because it is not too difficult to follow. It is to be for a few hours and so I would still advise my younger generation to take this precaution while someone is pregnant.THere may or may not be scientific truth in it but I would still follow the ancient rule.

Hi kala! Though the discussion appears to be intended for 'mothers', yet I am poking my nose in it...........lol!. I think during pregnancy if a baby’s mother was exposed to solar eclipse, it would be difficult to draw a conclusion that deformities in a child happened due to solar eclipse. I feel that scientifically it cannot be proved. However, it is a kind of ‘belief’, which is followed my many people and they assume that if there is any deformity in a child, it could be due to exposure of her mother to solar eclipse and this belief is going on since ages and it would be difficult to break the shackles. Have a great day! Deepak PS - I find that you are just short of 10 posts to your 2000 mark. Keep it up!

THanks Deepak ! It has been such a long time for me to reach this magic number.Only for the past few months I have been really a ctive here and I think while the first thousand would havv taken me three years this has beena achieved in less than one year.As far as this belief goes what you say is absolutely right. This belief has been handed down ages and I still would follow it even if it scientifically not proved.Just a precaution.

Hi Kalav, belated happy new year. On 14 February, when the whole world is celebrating the Valentine's Day, we are having the Chinese New Year as well. I seldom check into mylot now, quite busy with writing for my two little blogs. How are you getting on? Did your friends enjoy Singapore too? The two casinos and the theme parks are opening this year, the mood is reflected in the stock market!

Mabybe it has some scientific backgrounds, so better be at home. There are many phenomena which science cannot explain, shuc as corp circle. Does it really exist aliens?
