Another Major Recall of Over The Counter Medications

One has to wonder like what is going on with recalls. Now it's one thing when we suddenly hear that the FDA is either pulling off prescription medications, or at least tacking on severe cautionary warnings about detrimental side effects of medications, but what is going on with recalls of OTC medications, many of which are products people have trusted for decades? Not long ago, a recall of the Arthritis Formula of Tylenol was pulled off the market due to complaints that the caplets gave off a strange moldy like odor which did affect people in causing them to have nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and/or diarrhea. Well now that recall is not only extended to all Tylenol products but many other under the McNiel division of Johnson and Johnson To quote from an article: The recall includes some batches of regular and extra-strength Tylenol, children's Tylenol, eight-hour Tylenol, Tylenol arthritis, Tylenol PM, children's Motrin, Motrin IB, Benadryl Rolaids, Simply Sleep, and St. Joseph's aspirin. The REAL kicker is that McNeil knew of the problem as early as early in the year of 2008 yet never mentioned anything...like HUH? Now I've never ever used Tylenol...my preference I suppose, but many people do rely on it...are you one of them? And was amazed that products like Rolaids and St. Joseph's Aspirin is included in this recall. Do any of you use any of these products? Have you gotten strangely sick and maybe never made the connection that it might have been one of these products? What I'd like to know..what the heck is going on??? If we can't trust OTC medications, like what are we supposed to trust anymore? Heck I just take good old aspirin for most of my problems Article source : http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?section=news/consumer/recalls&id=7220403 The McNeil website that gives batch numbers of all products being recalled : http://www.mcneilproductrecall.com/

I am a person that has to change my meds pretty regularly because they stop working for me. I usually use Arthritis Tylenol. I did have a weird rash for awhile and have really been racking my brain for where it could have come from. My daughter and I both react to food and meds this same way sometimes. It really makes me wonder.

Who knows maybe it was the Tylenol that triggered that rash??

Well, I wondered about that. Maybe I got some of the 'bad batch'. But I don't think so because I baught it about the first of the year 2009 and I think that was too soon for it to have been a part of the 'bad batch'.

I didn't know any of these medicines were being recalled, till now. I do use Tylenol products, because of a prescription medicine that I'm on, I can't take any kind of pain medicine that has Ibuprofen in it, so that leaves Tylenol for me, even Aspirin can be harmful for me to take. I've taken it for years and I've never noticed anything with them, now I do know that if I take Tylenol PM, it gives me nightmares and I can't sleep because I wake up off and on all night, I told myself I wasn't taking that anymore, but thats about it. They're always finding something wrong with different medicines and recalling them, and I'm sure it won't stop now, they'll keep doing it and trying to scare people.

That's horrible. I didn't know Tylenol PM might trigger nightmares...and from what I understand it's to help one sleep...strange, no?

Yes, it is strange because it is supposed to help you sleep, but I know if I take it, I'll dream all night, and can't sleep, then I feel awful the next day.

I got an alert in my e-mail last week about this recall. Had I known about it earlier, I would have had to thrown my Benadryl away. However, after having a cold so long, I had just used the last few pills. However, I knew my mom uses Simply Sleep on the occasions she has a hard time falling into slumber. So I told her about it and she let me throw her Simply Sleep away.

any company..that knows of a problem and doesn't act on it..should be up on charges. simple as that. this isn't the first problem tylenol has had either(the poisonings)..you'd think they'd want to put customers at ease before people just plain not buy it.

i wouldn't doubt it. i had prescription tylenol years ago for migraines..and it always made me puke after awhile.the doc said it was the headache itself, but i think there was more to it than that.

Thankfully I do not use Tylenol products as they make me sick to my stomache and have for many yrs. I prefer Aleve and Ibuprophen but usually will stick to Costco brand equivalents due to price. But to think they also took Benadril and Rolaids off the market. Doctors recommend Benadril and Tylenol most of the time over anything else usually for pain anymore, so it makes you wonder what next?

Thankfully I don't use any of those products...I usually just stick to good old fashioned aspirin for just about anything and everything and buy the store brand since it's cheaper

Thanks for posting this discussion. I checked my medicine cabinet and realized I do not have any of the Tylenol medicines as I buy the store brands who have the same ingredients. I did that to save money now I am really glad I did.

Thank you for the head's up. I just sent this to a bunch of my friends. I use tylenol PM. Not very often. My husband and I just finished a bottle I bought in August of 2009. We were going to buy more. When our arthritis acts up, we can work through it, but we can't sleep through it. Usually it's only a couple of nights every once in a while when it's really, really damp. Well, it's been a weird year. It was damp all summer as well as off and on in the fall and winter. The Drs. don't want me to use aspirin or Aleve, so that pretty much narrows down what I can use. We use tums, I don't see that on the list. Too bad, I liked Aleve. Moldy like oder, sounds grouse, doesn't it?

Unbelievable how many products are listed. My daughter sent me this a couple of days ago, and I was amazed. I don't take Tylenol, just generic aspirin, thank goodness. Makes you wonder AGAIN, what the heck is going on, and I wonder how many people really got sick and didn't associate it with the pills. Scary.

ALL Tylenol products? I do have some Tylenol, but I checked and what I have been using lately is a generic form of excedrin migraine and a generic form of motrin. I have children's tylenol cold formula and children's motrin as well. I have not noticed any symptoms or problems from the occasional use of these meds - I am not a chronic medication user so I don't usually notice problems. I don't think I have any aspirin, my husband does but I usually don't because I know you can't give it to kids.

Hey pye! Yes, I heard about this latest most incredible recall! I don't use any of the recalled products thankfully! But, it really is amazingly strange about this particular recall and the pallets that the meds were on! How in the hell did the meds get tainted by the pallets? That part was never quite explained, not that I guess it really makes a difference! I just don't understand it! You have to be afraid to pick up anything these days and wonder if before you take them if they're ok or not! What kind of world are we living in? If over the counter meds are always in question what are we supposed to do or think?

Since I tend to be anti-medication to begin with, I'm even cautious about using OTC type meds...although will use the store or generic brands only since they are so much cheaper. But who knows how these things get contaminated? And the fact that the company knew about it for quite awhile makes it all the more mysterious that they didn't recall sooner

I hardly ever use Tylenol, mostly because it has always upset my stomach. The only time I buy it is if I have bursitis and I haven't had that for a while. With all the recalls now, doesn't it make you wonder if the production quality has gotten worse, or if people are just paying more attention and reporting more? With so many pills having coatings now, who would notice if there was a strange aroma or taste? I wonder what else the coatings hide?

That's a good point you make about those coated pills...like it could hide the smell of something that wouldn't be too great for us in using

That's what I don't like. When they know about the problem but do nothing. I'm sure their inaction could result in fines from FDA. Now about Tylenol, I don't buy their brand, I only buy the off brand. I'm not supposed to take aspirin or NSAIDs so I can only take Tylenol or take nothing if I have pain. But as I said, I take the off brand. I usually buy Sam's Clubs Choice, it's much cheaper.

I usually use the store brands of OTCs as well since they are a lot cheaper. I don't care to take prescription NSAIDs either, since I've since heard a lot have very severe warnings about, like Cipro that can trigger heart attacks (oh lovely)--of course the chance of it actually happening might be nil, but why chance it...it's like playing russian roulette with one's life with prescription meds, but now that problems are cropping up with OTCs makes one wonder
