because I am broke, I can't actually buy patterns, so I just sort of guessed at the pattern.
Here's my blog post: http://hatswithears.blogspot.com/2010/01/hoot.html
The post has the link to the original pattern. I wish I could buy patterns. Anyway, I made the hats as gifts for my friends' kids.
Do you buy patterns? or just make up your own things? Or just use free patterns?

right now, I am surrounded by babies. I wish I had one of my own. sigh.
I'll post the pattern to my blog on Monday. That way I can get my friend to take the pictures. A tutorial! (Well, a simple one, but I have to start somewhere)

Thanks! I sent them as gifts so I hope people like them.
yeah, that's my blog. I wish I was better at taking pictures, although I bet an actual camera would help. My friend is going to help me by taking pictures.
If you want to know how to make just the striped hat, I can post it on my blog. it's very simple. The owl hat is somebody's pattern - I just figured it out by looking at it and simplified it a lot. (A lot - I'm really lazy)

I started doing my own patterns not only because I didn't have the money but because I am not so good at following them. After a few years, ( I wrote everything down after about year 2) my cousin pushed me into selling my patterns online which I do at Etsy.com. ( My store URL is on my profile page if interested). I do not earn a lot but I have fun doing it and that little bit of extra cash is always nice. I do print off patterns from some freebie sites though I admit to a large pile of some day patterns and a very tiny pile of done projects from them.

yeah, I have a binder of projects that I've printed off, and I really haven't done a lot of them.
It's neat that you sell your patterns! I feel like my stuff is too basic for selling.

Mine are simple as well which is why many people like them. They find so many patterns that are hard to follow and as beginners they are too hard.

I learned to knit when I was very small and have even taught knitting classes. So I can usually figure out a pattern just by looking at the item. Or even by someone describing it. I admit it would be easier if I could afford to buy patterns, then I wouldn't have to figure everything out. Then again, there are a lot of free patterns available so I can't really complain.

I haven't heard of that magazine.
I have found quite a few free patterns on people's blogs, people are very generous.

i do not buy knitting patterns 1. i also am broke and do not have the money to buy them 2. i would not want to buy them when i can look up online and print off any pattern that i like for free so why spend money on something that you can get for free 3. when i was taught to knit i was never taught how to read a knitting pattern so i have always just made up the stitches off the top of my head as i go along so it would be pointless for me to buy one when i would not be able to read it
