Rediscovering past things you enjoyed in life

Hi everyone...it seems throughout most of my life, there has been such a variety of things I've enjoyed in life...dozens. I will pursue them for a while and for one reason or another, pick them back up, or rediscover them at some point down the road. Recently, I have rediscovered my love of drawing, sketching. I used to do it so much, but then when I became so busy with mothering and working and such, I put it aside. Have you found yourself setting aside something you have enjoyed in life, only to "rediscover" it later...sometimes years later? What was it, and why did you quit in the first place? Thank you for sharing any examples you have. Karen

I love writing, but I quit from it 3 years from now.. I just found myself now that I am starting to redirect myself from realizing it again... maybe I can't just really leave it completely. I wrote novels (in our language--Filipino), now I started to draft a new one...

Hi Primeaque Ah, to write a novel. I did exactly one, hated it, and threw it out lol. But I do still love to write and may try another someday. Yes, we turn back to things like that, even after laying it aside for years! It is as though it is a part of us that hybernates, but then comes back awake. Enjoy writing the new novel :) Karen

I've always loved drawing, writing, and playing the piano. But motherhood has made me forgot all of them. And I plan to do them all over again once I retire. I used to love crafting and forgot them for awhile, but I came back to do them again recently, because we moved to a new house, and we had lots of boxes that I found a pity to throw away, so I cover them with pretty leftover wallpapers and glue ribbons and laces around the top to keep all my little trinkets.

Hi Godmother. Even as your children grow, you might enjoy teaching them to play the piano and draw, or as you said, you can return to these loves when they have grown to adults. You crafting with the boxes sounds like fun, and a pretty way to recycle them! Thank you for your response. Karen

For me time and space have often been the reasons for putting aside pleasurable habits. I have been thinking of put time back into painting which I have not done for a while and do enjoy. Thanks for reminding me

Hi Pat...the space is an issue for me to, so I resolved it buy invensting in some stackable plastic storage units with drawers, and I cover the whole lot with a lovely lace table cloth lol. I do hope you pick up your paints again. It would be nice to see some of your work! :) Have a great day. Karen

YOu and I have so much in common! I have picked up and dropped so many interests in my life that I tend to feel bad about it. Being a dilettante and all that. I love (at times) sewing, arts and crafts, working with my hands in various ways. My computer room here is stuffed with art supplies and crafting gizmos that I haven't used for a couple of years. (But I will again!) A few months ago, I started knitting again. It was funny, I felt the urge to knit "coming on" and eventually did something about it. I'm sorry now I waited so long, because I am enjoying the heck out of it! Like you, I think I put knitting aside when I became a mom. When my kids were home for Christmas, neither of them had ever seen me with knitting needles in my hands. They just turned 27 and 33! Kind of a long hiatus, right? I remember doing some pretty challenging stuff back in high school. One was a gorgeous sweater with panels of different stitches and cables. I remember starting an argyle sweater vest and giving up after about eight inches! So far, I've been sticking to rectangles like scarves and prayer shawls, to get my chops back and regain my tension, but I feel the urge to try something more demanding. I'm looking for the right pattern and yarn to see if I can still do a sweater. I have also invested in some good knitting books since, being self-taught, there is a lot I don't know. Knitting is like a meditation for me. I use the stitching like prayer beads to pray and chant for myself and my friends and loved ones. That is why I love the prayer shawl concept so much. I have so mnay friends in a world of hurt, it's nice to be able to offer something concrete to comfort them as well as my prayers. As a final note for you, I offer this: Many years ago, while in line after a sewing club meeting, I lamented to the older lady next to me that I never had enough time to pursue all of my hobbies and projects. I've never forgotten her reply..."Ah, but we're the lucky ones!" She really put it all into perspective for me, and she was absolutely right!

Hello Oreo I think people like us tend to pursue a love so diligently that we burn ourselves out from that and put it aside...yes, sometimes for years. But at some point, most of us do return again to those kinds of things...or we alternate them, doing one for awhile and then another. I fully understand how knitting soothes and takes the mind away from troubles, as it has the same effect on me. I have so many lovely yarns yet to turn into something, and this is a perfect time of year to do that. LOL, time...I have often thought it would be nice to get many lifetimes to explore all I wish yet to learn how to do. Variety is wonderful. Thank you for a lovely response. Karen

It's wonderful when this happens, isn't it? I, too, cycle in and out of things. Recently, I've rediscovered scrap booking, which I stopped doing about two years ago, as supplies became quite costly. This time around I think I might try digital scrap booking.

Well I guess ever since I was a child I used to love drawing, and painting.. and playing flute :D but I stopped it during my teen years because I learned computer and I became addicted to it :) hahahaha =)) sometimes I'd love to go back drawing and painting again but it was as if my talents have been gone :( I don't know if i'll bring it back, but i guess i "reinvented" my love for arts during my young years.. i learned to love writing when i became part of the school publication, and since then i have developed my love for writing stories (creative writing) which i guess is similar to painting and drawing.. except that i create my own world now through a pen and not with paint and brush :D Regarding my hobby playing flute, this summer I'd love to try that again.. hoping that I can bring my lost talents back.. =( it's quite hard if you have lots of interests, because you become mediocre in all those things =(

Hi Cecille :)) It's all art, yes, those things you have done back when and then today. I've found that we almost always return to something we really love eventually. It just remains dormant sometimes, but at some point, we tend to revive these loves or take on something similar...as you have with your creative writing :) Best wishes in all you do. Karen

I find myself thinking about that often lately. For years now I had put just about everything into work and had no time for much else.I miss the creative things like sewing and restoring old dolls and Teddy bears. I miss having time to use my overlocker, but that needs repair and it's way at the bottom of the list, as money is so tight.

Hello Missbdoll What nice things you have done. Things do sometimes take priority over our special interests, but many of us, at some point return to them. I hope the time comes soon you can again afford to pursue those things you enjoyed in the past. Karen

Hi Jo :)) and happy Sunday to you. Yes, with the computer at hand, I also read less than I used to, but also like you, I always have one book or another at hand. I hear you about handwork. I used to do a ton of cross stitch and loved it, but burnout struck me, too! I love a mean smiley face lol. Hugs, Karen

I enjoy engaging myself in having my own business the plan did not pursue because of lack of capital but in the near future it is my dream and i would like it to materialize as soon as possible. Those are the things I like which i would truly enjoy for the rest of my day, it is like a habit which i love to do and a lot of fun feel like not working at all.

Dear Karen, Wow, you are such an artistic person. Drawing and sketching is a wonderful way to appreciate the things around us. I love drawing and water coloring. But my passion was always on collecting souvenirs, ribbons, musical box etc. Sometimes when I do 'spring cleaning', I will stop and admiring all those items that I kept in the box which was put aside in the corner of the room. Cheers and take care :)

Hi Iriene....I do love things of the art world, for sure :) Your music boxes sound wonderful. I have some myself, and like you, it is fun to "play" the music now and then. I tend to keep things like jewelry in mine and set them on the dresser. It makes them easier to enjoy! Have a happy day. Karen

Hello Uma Yes, our mind is very much like a computer in that every memory is stored away in it somewhere, even though we may not think of those memories often. Sometimes when one crosses our mind, we want to do again those things we stopped that once made us happy. Thank you for your response. Karen

Karen, Besides having my laptop with me on the road, I will always have a sketch pad with me and when I am bored or have already had enough of everything I will always resort to my favorite pastime -drawing. You can find me literally drawing everything that comes into my finite mind of mine and this has helped me in some ways when I relate to children. You can see the awe and joy on their faces when they see their favorite cartoon or candy turn up on a piece of blank white paper. And the amusement they get when they keep asking if I can draw other things like an aeroplane, trains, mountains, their favorite doll and etc.. Frankly, I just found it relatively useful when I want to relate and communicate with young children. I am just happy to have picked it up 8 years ago after a break of almost a decade. It was during the time when I had to be stationed overseas for a stint. Not having my family with me, I just resort to visiting the local orphanage on my off days to past time. At that time, I was relatively new to the children and just could not seem to have any headway with them. It was not until when they were being brought out on a trip to the farm where they had a drawing session. That day, everything just fell into place like a jigsaw puzzle solved as I went about with the group and it was really an enriching experience for me. Since then, I just seem to have found another renewed interest with drawing and have never looked back or dropped it since. Your posts just reminded me of the joy when I restarted it and brought back a lot of memorable memories. Thanks.

It is much for you then, Sky, as for me. It had been many years since I had drawn things on a regular basis, and one day, for my granddaughter, I bought us each a sketch pad, and we drew in them together. Even though she's very involved in school now, I still draw, much and often, as I once did. You are right. It is a beautiful way to connect with children. I used to draw sketches of and with my own and with nieces and nephews, and then too for my own pleasure. I'm not sure why I stopped or why it took so long to rediscover this happy passtime, but I am glad I did, and that you did, too :) Happy drawing, Karen

Karen, I am guessing that part of your reason for stopping is probably as you have started in your post where you are caught up with your life's responsibilities and people around you. Also, the fact that there's no one with similar or common interest as far as drawing is concerned where you can encourage one another and share new ideas, not forgetting drawings. Whatever it is, do enjoy yourself while you are at it. All the best.

hi Karen I wrote a lot, and had twonovels set aside, unpublished as cost of sending them grew more and more just gaveup, now they are in storage. but I have began writing again as I love it, and it seems the most natural thing in the world for me to do, its become a passion. I am now journaling and writing poetry.may never sell anything but I still love doing it. and now again I am really pretty good at it. We have a class here called mental fitness designed to get older minds that are active to stay active and to help those who have had strokes. it uses a lot of imagination and creative writing.I seem to get a lof of kudos from the teacher and the other students. I just enjoy being there and participating with the others. I quit because I had self doubts and I could not get anything published. so now I am back at it. I am having fun doing it.

Hi Hatley Ugh...self-doubt is the worst, but I do hear you. Sending things out over and over...but then most famous authors go through that very thing. And hm, I wonder what would happen if you dusted off those novels? I'm so glad you have that creative outlet. Writing is a passion of mine, too, and it's great of you to pursue it. I hope to do the same my whole life. xoxo Karen

Hey Karen! I never was a very "crafty" type person! I always wished I could do more, but found that only once in awhile I would find a project and actually finish it! I made a jewelry box over and it came out really cute! I've done some various other projects, but nothing really big! I've done alot of furniture painting and re-finishing! I seem to have a knack for that! And I do love to re-decorate! And I am about to try to re-decorate my apartment again! Nothing major, just some painting here and there and putting some pictures and stuff back on the walls that I've bought recently!

Hi Opal Furniture painting and refinishing...that can be very rewarding...and it's hard work. I've done a bit, but not for a long time. Just a couple of dressers and a small table way back when. You'll have fun with the redecorating :) Also hard work, but very nice once it's done. xoxo Karen

Mine is my writing. I have been a writer since I was a teenager and I have set aside some of my writing several times throughout the year. I actually just found my manuscript again yesterday and I've decided that it is time for me to pick up my writing again. It is good for me to be able to destress and it is also rewarding for me to put myself in the position of the characters and just escape from the real world for a short period of time.

Do I sense a kindred spirit? I began at 12, outside of school work, by keeping a diary, and I love it still and do it again. Like you, I have set it aside off and on through the years for various reasons, but I always always return to it...fiction and non-fiction both :) Enjoy it! Karen
