What motivates you to write books or stories?

I'm just curious. The other day when I was getting ready to go to sleep, I decided to just.. write a page of nothing. And it actually turned into a page of a story that I could imagine myself turning into a make-shift book someday. I went to sleep that night and dreamt about all the possibilities of the characters and plots I just started talking about. But it was all for fun, just as kind of an emotional release, obviously not because I feel like I'm a skilled writer or that I would have any chance of ever getting it published. My questions for you, any of you, but especially those of you who write - whether it be poetry, research papers, short stories, novels, whatever - WHAT is the motivation behind what you do? Is it essentially just for fun or does it come with an actual aspiration to have it published and become a famous, amazingly wealthy writer some day?

By me having a book that I'm trying to get published, I can tell you first hand... What takes being a writer is imagination and the skill of being able to write (properly constructing sentences and paragraphs and knowing how to use punctuations). If you have any acting or theater experience, that's good. You can parlay what you've learned as an actress into your character development. It'll help you understand how certain personalities function better and you'll have an easier time flushing them out to your audience. You'll have to constantly do research on every little thing that you have the slightest curiosity about (especially if it's a full-length book) to make sure you got your facts straight. Even if the research isn't visible to the reader when they're reading it for the first time. You may do two days of internet research for something that may only receive a paragraph worth of attention in your book. Well, the research toward that seemingly overlooked topic may serve another element of the book. There's many of times where you'll get writer's block, you just have to keep faith in your talent and work through it like any other obsticle in life. And before long, you'll soon find out whether you got what it takes to excel as a writer.

I think what motivates someone to write books or stories is things that happen in their lives that are either bad or good. I mean these are life changing things that are happening. People usually write stories when they are going through something very depressing like losing someone they love or someone they cared about passed away. I also think that people write stories or books when one has overcome something so tremendous and gives an outlook on how they did that. Writing stories and books is all about self expression as it should be. This is probably the best way for someone to do this so that everyone can read it.

I'm motivated to write because if I didn't I don't think anyone would like me. If I don't write in a day I become a very nervous person and quite prone to snapping at people. I'm also motivated to create stories that I needed to read but didn't exist. I figure someone else out there might need them too. Lastly, I write because I'm an artistic soul and writing is the easiest venue for me to express that.

I love writing. I love creating worlds that I have control over what happens. I hope that one day I do get published and I see my name on a book. That is what motivates me. The day that I see a book with my name on it I will feel so good and accomplished. I don't really care about becoming wealthy but just the thought of seeing my name on a book and knowing that people are going to buy it and hopefully become fans, that just makes me want to keep writing more and more. Good luck with your story.

I like to write poems and short stories. I would like to get some of my poems and my stories published one day, but most of all I write because I get an idea and simply HAVE to write it down. When I get an idea I tend to write really, really fast, so that I don't forget the story or the poem, and sometimes I get stuck and can't finish the thing that I started. Many of my poems are based on parables or new age stories or fairytales that I read, if I really like the story (and the message in the story) I want to turn it into a poem. I also write poems that are based on my own life or my problems, and I like write about those things in a symbolic way.

Sometimes I feel alone.I am not a person who shares my feeling with anyone in this world.I keep things in my mind. These things play with me when I am alone.Once my friend gave a suggestion to write my feeling in a book and then you feel comfortable. What she said was right and from then I started writing. All I wrote is about my self experiences.Nice way even to kill time.

I write personal journal entries all the time. But I am a Bible teacher and so when I am studying I take a lot of notes. The notes tend to grow until I have a study guide or a chapter outline for a new book! It keeps happening and I can't keep up with it anymore!!!

Before, i writed poetry but it was just for express my feelings and emotions because i was sad-depressed so i wanted to relieve my soul. Sometimes, i writed on my diary just for express my ideas and others things about my life. I like to write stories too that i want to transform into novels because i don't why: i really like to create news personages and news worlds, it's just for excersing my imagination and make me dream because the world where i live is so boring with the same routine, so i want to go into others worlds, sure we couldn't travelling into others worlds/dimensions physicaly so i create my own world, my own dimension with his owns laws and where there are many actions/adventures (like Indiana Jones xD) just for dreaming. ^^

I write research papers but my only motivation for that is because I'd rather not fail my courses... As for short stories and other stuff like that, it's kinda the same deal as with you. I just start writing for a silly reason like booredom and then I end up with mulitiple pages of decent stuff in front of me. Once it's there I kinda just feel this drive to see the unorganized, unedited, bare bones of a (potentially) good story infront of me taken to it's finished state. I do want to get something published some day...not that I expect to make anything off of it, I just think it would be pretty cool to have something with my name out there.
