How old is too old to have children?

January 28, 2010 10:17am CST
On the news lately there has been a lot of Mums to be over 60 and yes over 70 years old that have given birth although I must add not naturally! Do you think this is right? because they desperately need a child? I dont. One was in the news lately and then died before the child had grown up. I am a Grandmother and I must admit that I have not got the stamina that I had when my own children were little and therefore think that older parents cannot run around as much as the younger Mums There is also the age gap between mum and child. I would say would the mum be around to see the child become a grown up but I am the first to admit that that could happen whatever the parents age. When your body tells you it is too old for a child, the menopause, then I think you should accept that and not mess around with science.

I think around 30 years old to have a baby is better. It's very risk to get a child birth at a high age like 60 and harmful for both the mother and the child.

Though the medical top age is 34, I think it's good to have child before 30. And my mum gave birth to me when she was only 20. She is very happy now. Because I grown up and can make my own life, so she just enjoys her life, travels, does the things she wants to do, and doesn't have any gap with me. I always share my own things with her. We just like friends. I think this is very good. I also hope to be a young mom, but I'm so busy now~~~~

I wish people would not tease women so much about not having children! Generally, that is the issue! So the need to show even we can have one, and even at this age is what takes over. :( I also wish people would not be pushing their children at such women, expecting them to have such needs and being able to love another woman's child! While it is possible, it is also insulting, especially when such behavior is obvious. Instead of standing up for them when people are resorting to subtle and blatant teasing, now we start the reverse process about taking a decision on their personal issues. Nice lot of well mannered folks we are evolving into.

Give a child birth at age of 60 is very risky. There is a change to die to delivery the child on that age. In medical term less then 40 and more then 18 is perfect time to delivery a child. And i totally agree with this.

i think that 26-32 is the best time to have a baby. first, the age one lady are in is the best time to pregnate for her health and strong body.moreover, the lady have taken part in several years job career, and have some money to support her family and the new baby.

I honestly think it depends on the individual....I mean for ME PERSONALLY I couldnt see myself having kids in my late 50s or older..but I would definately still be bringing kids into the world well into my 40s if my husband would let me!

I think it is very selfish of a woman to have a child after her body shuts down the reproduction equipment. She doesn't have the energy it takes to run and play with a child, teach them somersaults and handstands and cartwheels, help them ride a bike or hike with their scouting troops. Bringing a child into the world and leaving that child by dying before they finish high school or college is cruel. So is saddling them with an elderly and disabled parent before they are even 20 years old. Even in the best case scenario, you probably won't live to help them raise their own children and complete life's circle. I don't think it should be legal to subject children to such thoughtlessness and cruelty.

I can't name the exact age, which I think would be a limit to have a baby. All I can say is that mother must be able to raise the child properly and young enough to live at least until the child grows up. I also think that, mother shouldn't be too old because older people have different point of view on perhaps...dress code, or life values so the child they raise may not be able to adjust to the life the other children live, if you know what I mean. I don't blame older people, I just think that younger mothers manage to raise their child more successfully, than these extremely old ones.

I agree with you sister a woman has no business having children at the age of 60. How does she think she can cope with children at such an age. I am not yet 30 but I know how exhausted I feel at the end of the day when I have to clean up after the children play not to talk of an older person.

I'm not against Grandmother who give birth when she is over 60,but it depends on her energy, the old-age woman must run the risk of birthing unhealthy baby.On the other hand, you must consider about the thought of your daughter's children, will they accept and play with their little uncle or auntie who is below their age?

Medically the top age to have the first child is 34 years old because the age of the mother is linked with Down Syndrome, and also you don't want to have a baby while you are too old because you won't see them getting marriage or graduating from college.

Thirty-four is the generally accepted cutoff to reduce disabilities caused by genetic problems such as Down Syndrome, though I admit by the time I was in my early thirties, I did not have the stamina I'd had ten or fifteen years earlier. I know women have healthy babies at forty, but it's running some terrible risks, and the woman's body is headed toward menopause. Having children hitting puberty as one is hot-flashing into menopause is hard on both mother and child even if everything else is normal.

i think that people need to look at the big picture when they have kids. for example how old will i be when my child is 20? i know a guy who had kids when he was really young and when his kids were little a lot of people thought he was the grandfather!
