Horrid Hair

I washed my hair today for the first time in two days. My hair tends to get greasy very easily and I read somewhere that if you are willing to wait the hair will regulate itself and washing will no longer be necessary. But I hated the feel and look of my skanky hair and headed for the shower. Have you ever tried not washing your hair for a while? What happened?

When Ricard's cousins came from East Germany in 1988, one of them asked me how often I wash my hair. When I told them every other day, one of them said, "but doesn't it get greasy if you wash it that often?" I hadn't really noticed. But in retrospect, when I do skip a day, I feel really greasy. And when I was much younger and only washed it once or twice a week, I don't ever recall that it felt greasy.

My wife heard of this a few years back and did not wash her hair for about six months. It involved a lot of brushing of the hair and having to put up with the dirty feeling. It was horrible and greasy for the first month, but then, just like you say, it started to regulate itself and after a bit longer, it did not need washing, was not greasy and looked really healthy!
But then our daughter went through a really bad period with getting head lice from school and we all needed to treat our hair as she passed some of the horrible little things on to us!
My wife had to wash her hair and has never gone through the process again.

My hair is short too. (as you can see from my 2006 profile pic, but it is still the same)
I shave my head with clippers every month or so, so when we had the lice outbreak, I only had them once and that was it. Same with my son as we do his hair the same way. My wife had them a few times, but my daughter just could not get rid of them. We tried all the natural products, then the harsh ones that peeled your skin off as well, putting her hair up every day and spraying it with tea tree oil.
This went on about a year, even over the summer break from school she had them. We finally decided to be extra vigilant and comb through her hair every second day with conditioner until we saw nothing for over a week. This took over a month, but did the trick. During this time and afterwards, we not only put her hair up and sprayed it with tea tree oil every day, but we would coat her hair in hair spray after this as well.
We do not like using chemicals, but this was the only way that we could stop them!

It's true that when you wash it everyday the oil balance will be upset and it will get very yucky. I would not be able to stand not washing my hair at all! But I have gotten it to the point where I can wash it every 3 days instead of every other day.
When my hair is dirty it's like having a tight, heated cap over my head that heats up my whole body and I feel really scummy. I don't think I could last long enough so that my hair would take care of itself.

Ooh, yes, my hair goes the same if I don't wash it every few days. If I don't wash it for a while - like when I've been ill, it just goes yucky and manky, oh, and skanky too. I think you need to wait about a month or two before the hair starts regulating itself, if I remember correctly. Well, I've never waited anything near that long, and don't really intend to!
Actually when I was at school there was a boy who was trying this out. He didn't wash his hair for ages. It went all greasy and disgusting. Usefully(!!), I don't remember what happened in the end. I suspect he gave up and gave it a much-needed wash.

I don't think many people wanted to go near him. Yes, you are very high maintenance! (Especially if you also try out some make-up, as suggested in one of your previous discussions..)

Hi plkey, I've never tried not washing my hair everyday as it's one of those things one does in the shower, but I've been forced to go without on some of our frequent lack of water days. This is not good as my hair grows in the night. I was agonising the other day as without water again and had to be out bright and early on Tuesday with shiny glowing locks, so I followed the rabbits advise of using bowl and kettle and bottles of water. I just would have felt messy without.

Tried that, I lasted for a week and it felt so horrible I had to give in and wash it. Eldest grandson seems to be trying that experiment, it hasn't worked so far and I'm itching to wash it for him, not easy though now he's 6 foot tall.

Hi p1ke, it is a fact you leave your hair rather than wash it that it will clean itself..the oils have time to take over and help the growth too. The longest I have left mine is for a week, by that time it was all bufon and felt horrible-the only excuse I had for that was I was ill at the time..hugs LoLo

Put it this way-it all really sticks out and I have to wash it-though am now interested in using the vinegar way as said above...what vinegar do you use for one instilled or uninstilled or does it matter? Is it ok to use conditioner especially at the ends? Would love to try that way for a couple of weeks and see what happens or if I prefer that way as I have such a sensitive scalp...hugs LoLo

Two days, that's nothing, I go longer than that or else I end up all frizzy. I have very dry hair, so, leaving it go a bit, allows it time to develop it's own natural oils. Washing my hair too often just gives me a big frizz ball for a hairdo as it removes all my natural oils.
But I can't see washing it not being necessary. Gotta get the dirt out somehow, sometime. ha ha

Well here´s an admission which I rarely make public ...
I´ve not washed my hair using shampoo for several years.
Gulp! Now everyone knows!
I wash it with hot water alone in the shower, or use a rinse of vinegar if it feels dirty. The vinegar smell doesn´t stay by the way!
I have long hair, and I don´t think you would realise how I care for it unless I told you. I don´t use styling products though. Perhaps if I did I would require more chemicals to get rid of them again. Hot water is perfectly sufficient for the general dust and day to day dirt that you pick up.
What you´ve heard is correct. Your body will regulate oil production. It would be a good idea for anyone planning to cut out shampoo to do so gradually though otherwise your hair would get horribly oily before it realised to cut down oil production.

Fascinating! I would love to be able to do this if it would work as I can't find a shampoo that I'm happy with for very long. Something weird I've noticed is that while the top of my head will get oily if I go too long without shampooing, the length of my hair will feel very dry and tangly. Brushing just seems to make the oily part oilier without being much benefit to the dry, tangly feeling.
Do you use conditioner? Do you have any problem with tangling or static? What type of vinegar do you rinse it with?

so much had been said about this washing of the hair to be only about twice a week or something like that. i mean, what? i live in a tropical country, my hair is thick in strands and many on my head, i have oily skin which extends to my scalp and just like everybody else i perspire. gee...if i can bubble those germs away from my body i can't see why the head should be an exception. just like you, let's wash it all the away

I don't wash my hair after a perm for three days and when I colour it's two days. I have this problem area behind my ear and so I have to wash my hair on a steady basis to calm the itching.

i haven't tried not washing my hair for a time. i used to take sa bath at least once a day, doing so includes washing my hair. i think if i don't wash my hair in a day it may feel itchy... so i'd rather wash it regularly.

I once tried that when I was about 14. It was a rebellious act because Mum wouldn't let me do something. However, it annoyed me before it bothered her! My hair has always got greasy quickly. It's not so bad now but when I was younger, I could wash it and five minutes later, you'd think it had been soaked in chip fat! I heard that leaving it would make it "clean itself" but it definitely didn't work. My hair just got skanky.

It's one of the things about hospitals. They never wash you properly. I had a bad motorcycle crash once and they had to reconstruct part of my hand which was very dirty with blood and mud. They cleaned around the immediate area but left the rest. I had to wait until the plaster came off weeks later before I could clean myself. Yuk! XXX

there were times that even if i took a bath, i did not washed my hair with shampoo. sometimes i just soap it. it will feel you better and refreshed but the feel is not better than shampooing. in two days without washing and shampoo, my scalp will get itchy and that's what i don't want to happen.

I have a long, wavy hair. I can't not wash it everyday because it will end up frizzy, all over the place, tangled and unhealthy-looking. Besides, I don't like the feel of unwashed hair. It feels dirty and itchy especially when I get exposed to dust and smoke which happens everyday.

I also tried not washing my hair. However, I cannot stand the greasy feeling and also my scalp started to get itchy. I've read somewhere that it is good not to wash your hair sometimes and there was even one hollywood celebrity who does this. I am not sure if it was Sandra Bullock. I never did it again. It is kind of irritating and I don't feel comfortable.
