Hey guys and gals, I have studied my whole life only thru books and accepted whatever teachers told us? As i have entered in this internet age i found so many references and articles to prove alternatives to text book teachings. Including i found people like you to give me lessons. Past only a teacher was supposed to be a scholar, now i have you. So my question is the paradigm has changed we have choice of internet or textbooks also teachers vs people at discussion forum? Who and what would you prefer? Thanks

I would prefer books. I love to read books. As of now I'm working on my thesis. Some of my classmates uses internet as one their source. For me it is easier to use books.. I feel more comfortable with books. I can bring it anywhere.

i would prefer the internet in these days, though maybe some of the information might not be 100% true but at least it'll make the teachers happy. internet might seem to cover all of the things that we need, but when it comes to the specific things sometimes the internet might not be enough, i experienced it a lot...

I prefer text books rather than ebooks. It harms my eyes. I have also seen that I can't remember so long if I read that in the internet.

I think that formal education, that is school and teachers, should still be our main source of factual information. The Internet resources are there to supplement your learning and thirst for knowledge. Not everything on the Internet is correct or factual and you need to develop a way to verify these things. It depends on what you're trying to learn I guess. Bottom line for me, i don't think they're comparable so that you can choose one over the other.

The text book always work when it comes to mathematical subjects. The ones found in the internet are more complicated and difficult to understand although theres an abundance of information. The advantage of textbook is their simple to learn but since the textbook is just a compact compilation of lessons, there is some need for internet in order to expand the facts that books show. About the source of pictures, the internet wins by a landslide. In our country most of the textbooks should pictures only in black and white while at the internet they are all in color and in high resolution. If I'm to choose from the two, I say that both are essential as modes of learning. It is way better to read from a textbook than from the computer screen and even if its printable, the ink costs too much.

Hi there, For me I prefer them both. Textbooks can be more accurate sometimes than the Internet but in the internet you can update your knowledge everyday

I always like to expound on the knowledge I've gained from books and professors. They have provided us with a foundation, and it is up to us to keep that going. Although the internet and the people on the internet add to our experience and our learning, it is always nice to have the cold, hard facts to fall back on that are based in what we learned through schooling.

I personally prefer the discussion forums to get correct information. However, if I'm concerned about a grade, I go with the teacher. Use the teacher recommended text books and pass with flying colors.

Hi sirill, it is your avatar that brought me here. :) The baby's face is fabulous. :) I guess I have to say something on the subject of discussion as well, dont I? :) Well, I think what is discussed in forums is subjective. I mean, there may be honestly authenticated stuff, right beside something else that is just typed there to win the argument. :) Got what I mean? I mean, some of the things mentioned there may not have any substance in them, may not have been proved. So believing everything on net is dangerous. :) Have a nice day. :)

The only problem I have with Internet resources is that there are so many out there that you can't determine which is right or which is wrong. Sure we can learn a lot of stuff out there. Like, programmers I know never really went into school for learning how to program. Some of them have the Internet to thank for that. But although information abounds there, having structured learning really makes it easier for you to understand the basics of a discipline. Like in music and dance, it would be very helpful for your music if you study the basics first. That way you would be equipped with the right technique. But that doesn't limit you in anyway. It just gives you a foothold from where you could launch your own style. I also think that having the structured discipline of school through textbooks could really make you focus. It's so easy to get lost with all the information in the Internet and just wander from one interest to another.

I will always favour physical text books over books that you can read online. However, the Internet is good for research and finding information and this is what I do online! I love my physical text books and some of them are even starting to gather dust now, quite a nice thing to witness!. I think that you can learn a lot from others online though and I am open minded about this. I love to study myself but my interest is in all things computer! Andrew

Internet was not available to me in school days where I think everyone had to put many efforts. So it was book, always being carried to the school but now scenario has changed, I prefer Internet as there is very wide scope of learning, a book have only pages whereas you have unlimited opportunities of reading good things over internet. At the same time I am connected to many intellectual peoples in the world which helps me to dig into the issues, finally I can say that I am satisfied with the earlier book learning and now its Internet. Internet rocks :)

well, internet provide more infomation than book does, but book provide the syllabus that you should learn rather than the internet do which give you a full pages of infomation which you only use some of them. so, by refering to book and find internet only on the part that is in the book.

Both the internet and textbook are usefull for learnings but textbooks and other books is where we first get our education like the alphabet, sights and sound and the pronounciation of words. Most of the contents in the internet were first written on books/textbooks and people just converted them into electronic file and post them in the internet. The only difference is see between the internet and books/textbooks is that books/textbooks are harder to find whether you have to buy it from a bookstore or borrow it from the library. Teachers are a lot more credible source of education than people in the discussion forums wherein teachers make in-depth researches to answer your query on particular subject. People in the discussion forums can give you meaningfull opinions but you will still look for more opinions if your questions were not satisfied.
