myLot population

So I was wondering about populations on the web. Just off the top of my head, I see the most people from the US, UK, India, Australian, the Philippines, Indonesia and Canada. I went and looked at a few things:
myLot population - top 5 countries (excluding unspecified) US, India, Phillipines, China, UK
Gross Domestic product - top 5 countries (excluding European Union, since when is that a country?) US, Japan, China, Germany, France
World population - China, India, US, Indonesia, Brazil
OK maybe I could have done the top 10, but I'm lazy...
So I was wondering why the population numbers on myLot were the way they are. For example, Germany, is way down in #23 and France is even farther down. It certainly can't be because either country is economically disadvantaged. And their populations aren't all that low either. Is it language? Or is it maybe something to do with the culture.
Any theories about why people from certain countries don't seem interested in sites like this? It seems to me that the demographics were very similar on other sites that I have been on such as Facebook, Multiply and Yuwie.
Just wondering...

I think that it could vary, which it seems to but I'm from the US and I've noticed that there's so many people that don't live in the US mostly from what I've seen in India China and even the Philippines, i guess people in certain countries are very suspicious of sites like these, I know I'm mostly suspicious of many of them this one isn't included as I've already gotten paid for it once :) excited for another payment just haven't been on it in so long. anyway I think it does vary on countries in many aspects.

I also wonder if there isn't some sort of cultural thing. For example, Germany. I've seen so few Germans online. Maybe they just prefer German language sites, idk. But my husband, for example, is very suspicious of online friendships and relationships (oh yeah he's German by the way). They just aren't real to him. So I wonder if it's partly a cultural thing.

They don't really allow polls on here, but maybe I could find some way to do it. :-)

I could only speak about Philippines since that is where I come from, and still it's very opinionated.
Our country is geared towards globalization and industrialization knowing that we needed to do a big deal of catching up. I also feel that our culture is strongly patterned after western countries especially USA. That's why, we tend to go where these countries are headed. And since the usage of computers is almost a prime commodity of our idolized countries, we adapt this culture and lifestyle as well.
English is also widely taught in schools that's why a lot of Filipinos are fairly fluent in the language, making it easier to blend into sites like this one.

I see words you use like insular, and I think they are pertinent to the point of view of some countries, and skeptical is also a word that would describe some. I find myself wondering about their internet technology, too. Just because they are modern nations does not mean that they have such widespread internet usage. I used to wonder why we have so few members who say they are from Mexico, of course I have not looked at the MyLot population lately.

Come to think of it, we have many German Mennonite people in our area. In addition to the fact that it would be "worldly" unless for business, most German descent people I know around here are just very into what is practical.

Well just as an example, a lot of my husband's relatives from Germany have internet and we e-mail back and forth, but they've shown no interest in the social sites I'm on except to look at the family photos. I wonder if they don't just think such things are a waste of time.

hi dawnald I have also wondered why those were the most prevalent countries. I am wondering if it is because mylot will only let us post in E
nglish but yet with educated people it shou ld not make that much difference surely. and to use a bunch of languages might make it harder for those of us who do not speak but one language. I too do not really know the reasons why, wish I did. I love to think we are one small world after all and are reaching out to all over the world.

i would agree with some of the responders here. people in places that are economically deprived but can still get to use the internet finds their way to mylot as plays some role in earning extra cash. they come here to earn and some would make it their second job, for those having a regular job but earns a little from it or what they earn is not enough for their family. and yours truly, is one of them.

Hi, i will answer just in my name so, is just my opinion.
If we speak strictly the money, I think almost anyone in Europe, not to vain on this site just to win $ 10, which means a meal at M'c Donalds for 2 persons.
Those in the east, as i am , come to learn English better, or want to enter in USA or UK better world, to know better life style from there.
But a French, or a Italian, or a German, are not very intersed in this kind of life, just because they have a a life style similar to the U.S. OR UK.
Maybe is something about culture too, maybe is hard to make a French or an German to speak English, when they have there many sites where they can speak French or German; i was in visit in France many times, and believe me, is hard to make a french to speak in English, or a German to speak in English, if they are not sure that is neccessary, even they speak English very well.
All respect for Usa or UK population, but i know European mentality, and i am sure that you remember about 100 years war between France and England.
Are many reasons , seems that all everything revolves around the American people or English on the site and is easy to understand why there are many Indian or Pakistani, and other countries that gravitate around the English or American civilization.
Nordic countries just have different lifestyle, are highly developed, Arabs are not welcome because they speak much of religion, and discussions often degenerate, and they are missing.
Even if this site is wonderful, you can say to win some money, or you can find answers or clarifying many unknowns, should your account history, culture, current situation in the world as divided world, as is curiosity, it takes money, how are others who accept other opinions, and are often rejected simply because they disagree.
And then, it is hard not to be disappointed when someone who comes from another country, to come to this site, find a group of English people , or Americans, who make common cause against someone who comes from another country, of course there are all sorts of people, but often is difficult to accept that people open, friendly, or not less smart can be anywhere in this world.
As i say, i like this site a lot, are few people who come from my country, Romania i mean, who want socialize or earn few dollars, or learn better English; but i try a lot to make people come here; they come, but rarely they remain, all have different reasons,
I like a lot your discussion, i am sorry for my poor English, just because i can t explain more and better what i want to say.

Your English is just fine. :-)
My experiences in France and Germany were a bit different. I was almost impossible to find anybody in France who was willing to admit that they spoke any language other than French. But it Germany it was just the opposite. I kept trying to use my German and many of the people replied back to me in English. I think they were just being polite, where the French in some cases were being deliberately rude. Not that that has anything to do with the topic here. :-)
I'd love to visit Romania. The closest I ever got to it was Prague...

In Germany everyone speak English. It is about the culture. Woman in Germany will rather spend time making her house shining, meeting friends in cafe than spend hours on net.
When in Berlin last Fall, I noticed beautiful flowers hanging on every balcony.
The city was super clean with such beautiful old building with gorgeous balconies full of flowers.
I would call Berlin the city of bikes. Very wide sidewalks, so people ride the bikes on sidewalk. Seems like they have social life and such ambiance, they don't need to open an internet connection to be connected.
On top of it, people from Germany travel a lot, they have an average 6 weeks of vacations.
I felt the same in Paris.
I am not surprised not to see people from Germany on social networks.
They have different lifestyle.
Maybe they are on Facebook or Twitter for business.

It is socializing and a real interest in good interaction that draws most of us to these sites of choice. The question of language barrier is one thing of concern too. While most of us boast of English to be enjoying the status of universal language, it is seldom understood by millions of people in so many parts of the world. Good that you have given thought of it !

So sad to see my country is not even listed alongside with the rest here. Malaysia is a teardrop in the ocean compared to the vast population of other Asian countries. Maybe people from those countries who populate most of the social sites are social beings and thinkers. While those who are minority may not find socializing in the virtual world attractive. I don't know, that is only my assumptions.

Hmmm I have never paid any attention to the population and where or how many people were from each country. I have glanced at the countries and that is about the extent of it, and that has been a very long time ago when I did. I'm actually surprised that mylot hasn't reach population of 200,000 yet. I've heard of the other sites that you mentioned but have never heard of Multiply, what's that one about?

That is such an interesting question. I would say that language would be the main reason. I have relatives who live in Italy and although there are a couple who do speak English the majority of my cousins who are around my age do not speak anything but Italian therefore they have no desire to join a site such as MyLot. It is interesting because there are many here from China, Philippines, and India etc who specifically choose to come here to improve their English. It may then come down to culture, I don’t know...In Italy, for example, Facebook, MySpace and well known sites like that are the only ones used by the majority.

I don't really know. Langage would be a good bet but many Euopeans speak Englsh. Culture to probably has soething to do with it but I have found and appreciate the rich divesification of culture in different States in the USA. The difference between peole from New England the Southern Stats is very wide. And I expectthat California is even more diverse.
Speaking and writing English is so importantto people from different countries especially if they are economically deprived as it puts them in a better position to get a job which provides a decent wage. Tis is why many people fromChina, Phillippines and India like to practice on Mylot.
IDK. Just some thoughts off the top of my head.

Hi dawnald, i also started similar dis months ago in mylot. I was thinking that mylot is limited in some certain countries. Why?
The gross result i had found was there are sorts of sites equavalent to mylot in some countries and it is the matter why they are not interested in mylot. Lol

hi! As I see there are many people from India here and they are one of the most members on many money earning sites, and maybe there are so interested in this sites, because the online money earning in their country is very popular. And the members from other countries which we see very rarely, are maybe not interested because they don't know English!

I know with the United states at least, it seems that we have such a huge emphasis on the idea of 'making money online at home' and that sort of thing, that I'd expect to see a lot of Americans on any kind of site that pays you for participating! The same for countries with a lot of people with the sort of economic status of being able to afford being online, but not being really 'well-off'.
It seems that a lot of European countries are really more social in general than we are, as well. My European friends who are online always seem to be making posts between social obligations, so that it seems they're never online for long stretches of time like some of us Americans!

hello dawnald,
My guess is,maybe the sites popularity.
Unlike Facebook,Multiply and other sites that mosts countries knows about it.
Maybe the language also...if considered to be of the great barrier when it comes to inter-action(not to be specific with any country)
Just my opinion.
Have a good weekend

Hi dawnald ...
The reason of this phenomena that in europe the internet is the last place where you go to serch a way to earn money ... Maybey becouse some popular urban legends of people constantly get scammed or some other reasons , people just are not that interested about going and earning cupple of cents per day .
And on the other hand these countries listed on th top list are the countries wich figures on the top lict of population aswell , so eaven that could by an answer ...

i guess it may be that mylot is not popular in those countries. i do not think language and culture has anything to do with it. i say this because persons from other countries enjoy socializing and interacting with others outside of their territory.
