Cat owners are more intelligent than dog owners!

February 6, 2010 5:50am CST
This was the conclusion of a recent survey. As a confirmed cat person, I can only agree. What about you? do you think that cat owners are more intelligent than dog owners?

I did not see that statement in the article. I am a dog owner, however I'm neutral on this one. I believe that our pet's trainability and behaviors, or level of intelligence for that matter, is reflective of the owner. A rude and disobedient cat or dog says something negative of the owner. It means that he wasn't able to establish proper orders in the household, and failed to be a companion to his pet as well. Intelligence of these animals come from their genes/breed too, and their environment. So I would say that an intelligent pet has an intelligent owner.

Good response! I saw this item on the TV in the first place, and then looked it up online. You're right, the article does not mention that, but it was mentioned on the TV piece. I actualy like dogs, but I'd not like to have one - to high maintenance and the cats'd all leave home as well

I own both so I guess I am somewhere - middle of the road -intelligence I guess. I can see where they are coming from, I bet there are more intellectuals that would own cats and appreciate their independence. But I think there are some pretty smart dog owners out there too. So I am not sure.. HOW much I agree with that statement.

We had a dog many years ago as well as 6 or 7 cats. They pretty much got on all right together, but the dog was just a puppy when it arrived and it was heavily out numbered by the cats as well.

I have 4 dogs and 14 cats.. So although my dogs are bigger they are also outnumbered by the cats.. sometimes they are jealous of them.

As a dog person, I definitely do not agree. I don't think having what kind of pet can tell if the owner is intelligent. By the way, the statistics of the survey is interesting. Also, I like the website you mentioned - dogmagazine, I am going to bookmark it, as it seems to have many good information about dogs. Thanks for sharing!

I agree, you can't tell how intelligent the owners are just from the type of pets that they keep. I just thought that it was quite amusing.

I don't get it, is there any explanation behind it? if that is true, what do you think is the reason why a cat owner is more intelligent than a dog owner. What did the survey says. I am owner of dogs and cats, did that made me partial intelligent person?

Don't take it seriously - I don't!

It was on the BBC news, (so it must be true) this morning. I think that this is what they were talking about, http://www.dogmagazine.net/archives/519/uk-pet-owners-statistics-revealed/ though I can't see any reference to intelligence in there - maybe I was just trying to stir things up a bit.

I have a cat now but we used to have a dog. The cat is a very therapeutic animal, he is there to be loved and I suppose he keeps life very calm and peaceful. Dogs are loving too but they are far more boisterous, wanting to be looked at or talked to all the time and never running out of enthusiasm. I like both animals but cats are easier on the patience. We'll probably discover that people who keep ant farms are super brains or something now.

I believe that cats are used in some childrens hospitals to help them relax and to speed recovery. Perhaps older people as well, I can't remember where I saw that now, but I suppose that there will be something somewhere on the Internet about it.

My sister just found out she is allergic to cats, possibly some other animals too. That's very sad as she loves them. All she can have are furry toys .

I used to be a dog person until I had my own dog and then I realized that my dog wasn't as bright as all the cats I had growing up. I've turned into a cat person. I've realized that people that are dog people are kind of off. They're not always the brightest people. I've realized that cat people aren't as off their rockers and tend to not be as 'out there' as dog people.

Ha! A cat convert! I actually quite like dogs, not that I'd want to own one, but if I did, it'd be one of the medium sized breeds, maybe a collie or terrier. I really can't stand those little dogs though. I call them yap dogs and they are smaller that one of my cats - certainly my male cat who is over 15 Lb in weight.

Well of course I'm completely biased. I've had kitties all my life and would like to think I'm more intelligent. First of all, kitty owners don't have to walk their cats in frigid or hot weather--that's a plus I would think, don't you??

I have neither. I'm interesting to the survey. Could you give me some info about it? And I think whatever your owned, the very first thing is responsibility.

Cat folks are indeed. They don't need the groveling worship of their companions. Cat folks are content with existing in a partnership. The person feeds and cares for the cat; the cat respects and loves the person.

It was Winston Chirchill who said, (actually speaking of his liking for pigs) "Dogs look up to us, cats look down on us, but pigs treat us a equals" I've always liked that.

Why not ask your cat? You know that the cat will tell you, you are it's slave and only live to serve it's needs. If you have a dog ask it, the dog will tell you that you are it's hero, master and pack leader, and that he, (the dog) lives only to please, serve and protect you. Sooo? Now what do you think.
6 Feb 10
Yes and the pack leader is out in the lashing rain and wind taking his faithfull mutt for walkies while the cat slave relaxes in front of the warm cozy fire. I know where I want to be!

I think that dog owner are more intelligent than cat owner. Dog is a pet that provide safeguard to his master. And for security reason dogs are more useful.

I prefer a good strong lock for security - you don't have to feed it. But this discussion is not intended to be a serious one and that allows me to air one of my fantasys - keeping a leopard. That would allow me to put up a sign saying "Beware of the cat!" Thanks for responding

My husband and I are the biggest cat people you'll ever hope to meet. We love cats. It takes a certain kind of special person to understand a cat, and we all know that we don't own our cats, our cats own us as their pet humans. LOL Not sure about more intellegent, but it takes a special kind of intellegence to understand a cat.

I can only agree (and so do the cats! )

Hi, I think I will agree with you on that. I would also like to add, that as per my observations, cat owners are more selfish than dog owners. I found dog owners more confident. Cat owners also frequently develop a sense of self pity but they are found to have greater self awareness than dog owners. Cat owners are clean, which only a few dog owners actually are. Dog owners are indifferent on outlook, which I don't know if admirable. All these are my observations so has every possibility to be fallacious. The observation, though is made from a very indifferent ground. I don't own either a cat or a dog. God bless you all
