I'm not a "starving" artist, as to which any scales will attest... ...but neither am I plush with funds to waste, either. Here's my problem: I have a boxful of different colors of ball-point pens I sometimes use in my art, & they won't work! I've tried everything I can think of to get the ink out, all to no avail. So if ANY of you have a sure-fire remedy to make stubborn pens work, I'd bear your first child for you...if I still could bear any at all... But, seriously, I can't afford to replace this many pens, & all but a couple are almost full of ink! Some never made a mark at all! This is a life-long problem for me. Please help! Maggiepie LIVE LONG & PROPER!

I've heard that taking a lighter to the tip for a few seconds can help, if the problem turns out to be a little bit of dried ink plugging up the end. Honestly, though, I've never actually tried it myself, so I would suggest you try any other suggestions you get here first. Good luck!

I've heard that too. But usually I just press down hard and shake it and usually that gets them going...

sounds you got excellent advice for bringing your pens back to life above and it is great that you are trying to get the most out of them. however if they don't recover i do have another suggestion. i get through lots of pens writing notes for my course and often use coloured ones. i have found that you can buy high quality gel pens and the blunter felt tips very cheaply in pound or bargain shops, all the colours including glitter. just look for the section that sells stationery or school supplies,or even the toy section. your pound gets about 30+ - and they are just as good as the more expensive ones (might not last so long). should be the same in the states.

I love thin gel tipped pens for scrawling. Do you think ball point pen is American for felt tip pen as you can't make art out of ballpoint's surely. I pay 50 pence for two though in the cheapest toy shop and you can get 30 for £1. I'm going to have to write you a big list of what cheap things I need when you come to visit, you'll have plenty of room in your enormous suitcase but no smuggling the rats in.

I don't like those. I want gel ones. I don't think they call them biros over the pond. Don't you miss the days of the fountain pen?

I think I used to try doing that--ages ago--with varying success, but enough folks here have suggested that, along with other interesting things, that I'm sure I'll try it again. Before I try flame, however, I'm trying the other suggestions, as some of these pens are pretty expensive, & if there's any safer way I can get them to work, that would be better. Still, I appreciate your affirmation that it can be done, so thanks, Lakota! Maggiepie "This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice & be glad in it!"

I'm glad u aren't starving, but know how aggravating that can be. iI have held a lighter to the point & have had it help. Don't start any fires, lol.

Nah...not going to set anything on fire; my nickname is "Magpie," not "Firebug!" You take care, dear! Thanks for chiming in. Maggiepie "This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice & be glad in it!"

Hi Maggiepie, The tip suggested by using a lighter does work, I have used this method many a time and gives almost instant results. Just hold the the ball of the pen over the lighter for just a second and then test it. 9 times out of ten it will work. Just be sure not to let the ball heat up too much as it will just melt the plastic holing the ball in place and then you will just have a tiny metal ball on the floor somewhere

Hey, Zone! I have done the lighter thing, long ago, & if none of the other suggestions work (& my Sakura pen people don't have any objections--or suggestions), I'll surely attempt that drastic method again. Yeah, I have actually gotten that itty ball out before, though I deliberately dismantled that pen, just to see what made it work. That was in my "experimental" years...many moons hence... Thanks! If the pens are still full then the problem is probably dried up ink clogging the front of the pen. Try running warm water over the tips of the pens, leaving the pens out in hot sunlight for awhile, or as the previous person suggested putting a lighter under the tip for a few seconds (Be careful not to melt the pen though.).

I like this sunshine idea. It'll have to wait awhile, though; we're in a sort of monsoon at the moment... But it does sound plausible, really. Thanks! Maggiepie Let sleeping dogs lie. Why not? Politicians do!
