Well, yesterday was my birthday and besides the fact that yet another year is logged on this body, the day was a little bit dissapointing...Lets start with dinner. Jim and I had a reservation at a very high end french restaurant that I have been wanting to go to for years. Its one of those restaurants where there are no prices on the menu and the waiters wear tuxes and you have 5 people serving the table. It gets rave reviews year after year and because we both love french food, decided to go there. We made our reservation about 3 weeks ago because typically thats how long the wait is. So...our reservation was for 8:30. Jim came home from work, showered and dressed and off we went. I had bought a new dress, had my hair done by a friend who is a hairdresser, did my makeup with percision and thought I looked pretty good for an old broad..We get to the restaurant and are quickly met my the maitre de who tells us that they are having major software problems with their computer system and have lost all reservations for the day. WHAT?? He then tells us that they are doing the best they can and if we would like to have a seat at the bar, it "shouldn't be that long" Well, 5 glasses of wine later, we were finally seated at 10:15. I'm so sloshed on the wine that I can bearly read the menu, but manage to order beef wellington. After what seemed to be an eternity, the meal was served and of course my filet was not rare as ordered but more on the med/well side..WHAT???..Oh well, the salad was great, the hot bread they brought to the table was wonderful and the way they had the vegetables arranged on the plate was like artwork..No big deal..I don't know that the meal was worth almost 200.00, but at least we got to try the place. We go home and Jim gives me my gift and card. I knew what the gift was because he got me what I asked for which was a new cuisinart food processor. I didn't bother to unwrap it then, besides the wrapping that he obviously had done at the store was so beautiful you didn't want to open it!! BUT,,I did open the card....My friends, it was a Get Well Card!! I'm looking at this card which was very pretty,,,IF YOU WERE SICK,,and he's looking at me waiing for some kind of response..I ask him "Is his supposed to be a joke?" He looks at me puzzled and says "What do you mean?",,I tell him, Its a get well card and he says..WHAT??? Need I go on?? This morning I opened my food processor as I wanted to get an early start on dinner. I load up the processor with my aromatics, flip the switch and nothing...nothing at all.....Jim says, Oh no, it dosen't work and I say, WHAT??? and that my dear lotter's was my birthday 2010...Thanks for listening...

OK...the dinner reservation thing I can understand...computer problems happen. I can also understand how the food processor may not have worked, because it is not uncommon for things to be damaged during shipping or something like that. BUT...how the hell did he manage to give you a get well card for your birthday?? Did he buy a get well card for someone at the same time, and somehow make a mistake? If so, who got your birthday card? LOL What explanation has he given you for this??

Hi goldeneagle..Because he's an idiot!!! He said he thought it was a birthday card but knowing him the way I unfortunately do, he only looked at the pretty flowers on the front and never read it..It was probably misplaced in the B-day section by someone else and he just so happened to pick it up..Nice huh??

I have had those days. The ones where everything was supposed to be special and then little thing after little thing goes wrong. You begin to realise that someone is having a joke at your expense (and, no, it is not the person who is trying really hard to make sure that you have a good day). Someone - I really daren't say who - is making sure that every special thing that was planned turns out to be 'dust and ashes'. I think it's a little test of our sense of humour. At first you go "Whaaaat the heck??" and then you begin to realise that NOTHING is right and you both realise what is going on ... and both end up chuckling ... then laughing ... then falling about uncontrollably. You can be sure that that day of disasters will be a day that you remember, anyway!

Hi owlwings Yes, I will definately remember it..thats a given. You are right about having a sense of humor and that is one of my better attributes. I really had to laugh, again, today, when my Mom stopped by and saw the Get well card planted on my mantel and said, "'I knew you wern't feeling well,,what is wrong? I just said to your aunt that you looked sick" Well, thank you very much mother..just when I thought I was looking pretty good she says that...I swear, somebody "up there" is really testing me and I think its my brother, rest his soul, as he was quite the pratical joker..One day I'll know..hopefully..Thanks for your post..

Well, your mom's contribution really takes the cake, or did you even get any cake? Did she remember it was your birthday?

Hi GG - No, no cake,,I made a puff pastry dessert the next day that I love. You take a sheet of puff pastry and cut it into 4 portions. In the center I placed 5 hershey soft caramel filled kisses. You fold the pastry up like a beggers purse, brush with an egg wash. When it is baked you cut it open and the chocolate and caramel oozes out. You spoon some chocolate or white chocolate ganache over the cut part, top with whipped cream and fresh strawberries..Its one of my favorites and so simple to make..I ate 3 of the 4!! Yes, Mom did remember it was my Bday...She came through with the Bday check which makes her comments easier to take!! Oh well, there is always next year, God willing!!

This year has no where to go but up. Will you be going to that restaurant again? I guess you just got your three bad things together and over with.

You know, probably not..There are so many great restaurants here because its a tourist city and I have a list of ones I would like to try..It is just that fine dining is so expensive and right now, its hard..I don't even know how a lot of these places are keeping their doors open with the shape of the economy. Dining out is a luxury that people learn to go without in hard times which is another reason I like to entertain so much. It may not be white glove service, but its good food, good friends and always a fun time..

Hi cher...And thats what I hate about sports...Sports first, everything else second, at least in my house..If my birthday fell on a day when something was going on sports wise, my birthday would have to wait..Maybe that would have been a good thing this year!! Football is over and now its basketball and he's already talking about who's going to start or not start in baseball..It NEVER ends.....

Well first of all Happy Birthday!! That sounds like kind of a disaster especially on your birthday I am so sorry that happened to you!!! Well did you at least enjoy the some of the time you were out with your loved one? Did he ever say anything to you about your hair looks nice? You look nice tonight? Well maybe you can set future birthday date and try it again that's what my husband does for me if something goes wrong he will set a future date and we will re plan and hopefully it will be a better time. Good Luck and Happy Birthday Late!!

Hi J..Well, in retrospect, its all pretty funny..One thing I do have is a sense of humor and thank God for the little things in life!! Although Jim did not suggest a future "date", I love that idea and will bring it up to him..He is very good when it comes to compliments and has a way of making me feel good about myself even in the worst of situations or circumstances, so again, I'm grateful for that..I've learned that sometimes planning things out and expecting a certain result may not be such a good idea..I think its just better to do things spur of the moment and that way if it dosen't go so well, its not such a big dissapointment..Thats my new motto!!! Thanks for your wishes and your response..J

hi sulsisels wow that was one differentbirthday I will say, and to top it all off the Cuisinart food processor doesnt work. I did not know whether to life or cry when I read that, and a get well card he he he. I had a birthday a number of years back that went a bit like that too. My husband took me to my favorite restaurant for my birthday. We had steak and baked potatoes. well my baked potato was cold so my husband very politely asked the waitress who waited on us to warm it up. She did this and came back the potato was steaming, but when I went to open it to put on the butter, sour cream and chives, there on top of the cut open p otato lie a large hunk of red human hair. I almost heaved. It looked so gross. this did it . my husband called the manager. the manager grabbed the waitress who incidentally was red haired, and told her she was fired. He said that was your job, shame on you.but we were given our two dinners completely free, and I got ahuge angel food cake with strawberries and whipped cream. all the staff sang happy birthday to me too.So it was not a total disaster after all.

Hi Hatley Yes, hair is BAD...To me, that is one of the grossest things that can happen. If I see hair on my plate, I'm done..I can not eat anymore. I've seen lots of things in kitchens as I worked my way through cooking school working in restaurants. Its true when I quote the old adage, "What you don't know wont hurt you". I can never again order a Fromage Blanc because of what I saw once and I'll spare you the details..I think thats one of the reasons I got so interested in cooking..I know what I'm getting when I cook it myself!! At least your evening turned out well. Mine,,,not so much...thanks for the response!!! J
