You know, a lot of blouses and sometimes pants come with an extra button. Have you ever actually used that button? I used to save them but I don't even do that anymore. I just toss 'em! I don't know why they give us an extra one to start with, it's like they are telling us they are selling us cheap clothes that are prone to fall apart! Do you use the buttons?

To me, buying clothes with extra buttons, is the mark of excellence. Cheaper clothes don't come with any. The reason they include them is for the purpose of replacing the EXACT same button, should one fall off due to some unfortunate snag, or the like. High-end manufacturers sew on buttons that are hard to replace from your local sewing center, and therefore include a couple for your convenience...else you would have to replace the entire set with something that may NOT particularly match the article. That's why I say, that manufacturers who DO include buttons, are at least thinking of you, in that you can still look great should anything happen, as well as take pride in their creations. cdrxo

You are probably correct cdrxo! It is difficult to find exact matches many times. Usually, it's next to impossible as the buttons are specially made too!

Too bad I didn't start saving them years ago. My grandmother had a huge jar with buttons. i wish I knew where they were now because a lot of them are actually worth money! imagine that!

That is a really good question.. Most of the time I don't but I have. Usually I have been lucky enough not to lose a button, but if I buy a suit or something that has buttons or a really nice pair of pants I am sure to put the extra button in my sewing kit just in case. But I can honestly remember using the extra button for my myself just once, and for my husband just once as well. But since I work for myself now my working attire is usually sweat pants and a sweat shirt so not much chance of losing buttons there. We usually catch my husbands work pants buttons before they fall off so I can tighten them up before they fall off.

See, it seems like such a waste! I lose buttons but by the time I remember an extra one came with the item I've already misplaced the extra one too!

Hi Macdingolinger, I just used one on Sunday for my son's shirt, actually! As I was feeling good to do the ironing for everyone's clothes at home on Sunday, I noticed that one of my son's polo shirt buttons was missing. I noticed the extra button attached to the inner side of the shirt and had the missing one replaced with it. In the past, I had the habit of strengthening buttons of new shirts or blouses that I buy by re-sewing it. I just realize that I have not done it again for a long time. Good discussion here. Thanks.

Now those ones that are pre-sewn to the inside of the shirt, that's what I call handy. As long as it doesn't come off as well! Usually they don't!

Hi Macdingolinger I always keep them in my sewing kit, and I have used them once. When I was a child, i used to be very excited whenever I discoved there are extra buttons. It was like "Hey mum! They gave us free buttons!" Haha. I used to be a button collector (what a sad kid...) Who knows its a way for them to charge us more. Hmmm... However, I do agree with your statement that "it's like they are telling is they are selling cheap clothes" I usually make it a habit to reinforce the buttons with more thread because I don't trust their sewing. There was a time I bought a blouse, when I got home and wanted to try it out, the button just fell. Sigh..

I probably ought to adopt your ritual of reinforcing the buttons before I even wear the item. That sounds like a lot of extra work to me that I shouldn't have to do when I purchase a new item! Although I do check buttons before I buy a piece of clothing!

The funny thing about that is, while I always put the extra buttons in my sewing kit, I can never seem to find the right one if I need it. I never really thought about the companies admitting to shoddy craftmanship by giving us extra buttons, but you're right!

See, that may be the problem, I don't sew. I do have my grandmother's old sewing box though!

i ever used it, but once or twice only. usually, i don't separate the extra button from the cloth and keep it on different place, i just let the button stay there. therefore, if one day i need it, i will find it easily

What if it's in a little plastic bag? Those are the ones I can't find! The ones that are sewn in I don't remove but I can't think of a time when I actually used one!

I don't recall ever using the buttons, but was always glad to see them there. For men, they are generally on better clothing that costs more.
