Support them like you support any other. If the person need to see a doctors, specialist, need to take meds everyday, someone need to keep up with the schedule and help them out. I think spending time with them will help a lot too.

Just be open and talk to them about it. Have them seek counsiling just to help them along. If them take medications make sure they stay on it. Research the mental illness they have so you know how to personally help them

First make sure the Mental Health professional has properly diagnosed the illness. Make sure other health problems that could possible cause the same symptoms are ruled out... For instance. I had a friend who was suffering severe depression for years nothing worked, antidepressants made her sicker... Later on she found out she had untreated diebetis! Others found out there depression was due to Anemia, or Fibromalygia, or just a hormone inbalance... There are many other disorders where the Mental Health symptoms maybe causes by a virus, or something else... So first thing if you are diagnosed with Schizophrenia. Depression, ADHD, any type of mental illness. Go in for a full health check up .....to rule out any other disorders that the mental health issue maybe possibly a symptom of. Then try many other different treatments... for some its meds, for others it is retraining though habits, building a better living routine, or improving yourself out of the situation. Keep trying.. If one doctor is not helping after a couple of months, or treatment. Try another.. if that is not helping try another. Be Persistent they are learning new things everyday to help fight, treat, and combat mental illnesses. Most people who once they find their proper treatments..... Function so well no one believes they have an illness.... The Way you support them? ... Patient, allow them to talk to you.... Tell them when you know its their illness, help them get enough sleep and rest, but do not treat them like a child, show love to them, but do not burn them by overwhelming loving or being to suppportive of this triggers a flight responce... I am used to helping people with Depression, and Schizophrenia, and Bi Polar.. I grew up around people who had these illness they still do but some of them have them under control others do not..... First off anyone who is diagnosed needs hope. To and to strongly believe if they fight hard enough they will get better, or at least improve the situation enough to be able to cope and deal with it. I hope this helps. Now Here are some links that can help as well. National Allience for Mental Ill - http://www.nami.org Depression Support at About - http://depression.about.com (I used to work on that site as a chat host way back in year 2000, the best support you will find for depression. No other compares.) Building Foundations - this is also good but not as good at the other site http://www.teejer.net Bipolar http://bipolar.about.com I think is the link... Web MD http://www.webmd.com These are all good sites to get good help and support at for Mental Illnesses. I hope that helps :) ..

Depending on the status of mental illness, the patients should be periodically checked by the psychiatrists/doctors and medicines should be given. It can be treated and a person can come to normalcy.

Support them and encourage them to seek help at their local mental health agency and most importantly to stay on their meds even if they are feeling better. So many go off their meds when they feel better without connecting that it is the med making them feel better and then spiral back downwards.
