Hi Cher,
I am into crochet business but i never experience using plastic straw for my products. as a newbie to crochet, this is a good start for you. you need to use a bigger hook and use the basic single and double chains first. if you are already expose to designs then explore appropriate design for your output. good luck friend!

Somebody else posted it, but I'd have to agree on a larger hook. The hook doesn't have to be huge, just large enough so the plastic strips you make go through it fairly easily. I've made several of those over the years, mostly for the back door where everybody comes in with boots and muddy shoes. These mats are great, I like that you can hose them down, or even stick them in the washer on a gentle cycle and just hang 'em up to dry. They last a long, long time too. I always got the same brands of bread, so the color scheme was always the same. When I cut my strips, I start at the top of the bag and spiral my way down to the bottom. I use about a 1/2 inch to one inch wide strip. You'll have to take us a picture when you're done with your first one:-)

Good morning, cher913...at least it still is here on the West Coast! I wanted to do the same thing...and also make dog leashes...and the following is where I found a lot of good information and directions;
www.instructables.com
www.eHow. com
www.rusticgirls.comFun
Sure hope that one of these sites will be of help to you! The floor mats are great to just hose off..and hang on the line! I'm kinda slack here, as I am a sports enthusiast, so watching the Olympics. If I just had high-powered binoculars ... I could probably see lots of them! LOL! Take care..and Cheers!

I would say use a bigger hook then standard. I'm not really into crocheting anymore, i tried to learn but didn't really... Other then that I'd say also look for patterns, they sometimes have helpful tips and even pictures.
