My husband and I have been talking about moving to a piece of land I own to help with our payments and also to have a garden and put up food in case the economy gets really bad. Do you have the thoughts that our economy will get that bad?

I do, and I have been planning to do essentially the same thing. I just hope it waits a couple of years though, because we can't afford to move or buy land until then... When my husband retires, we are planning to buy some land in West Virginia and live as self sufficiently as possible, having animals and a garden, and a house with solar power or a generator. It's getting pretty scary. I'm already out of work and having a hard time finding even a part time job. If it weren't for my husband's job, we would be in serious trouble.

I don't see the economy getting any better but I'm glad I've found someone else who feels the same way we do. My husband has lou gehrig's disease and I had two heart attacks last May. We moved back to Oklahoma in my mama's house --she passed away last Jan. but it's in a town setting and we are thinking we need to be canning and putting up food and water and all kinds of things to get us by if things get worse. I think you and your husband have the same ideas we do and if you have kids I also think we'd doing them a favor as well. My son doesn't think things will get all that bad but he's young and I' m worried about him and his family. I have enough land that I inherited from my grandparents for several families to live. We might not live in style but we'd be alive. The generator is a good idea too. We just had to buy one cuz of the ice storm that hit us two weeks ago and didn't have power for six days. I'm out of work as well but I'm also 61 and have applied for Social Security Disability which they have turned me down once and I've appealed. I f it werent' for my husband's VA retirement we wouldn't have anything. I hope you stay in touch and we can share ideas on canning and basic survival. Thanks for replying and keep in touch.

Here in our country the economy keeps getting worse. If not for the our overseas workers remittances, I think we would be on a far worse situation right now. But Here we have a different definition of good life. It's enough that we have a roof over our heads, eat at least twice a day and have some simple pleasures (like having a tv). Although I'm quite comfortable compared to my other countrymen, it gets depressing sometimes. Farmers are not given that much value here so while they grow food to sustain us, much of them don't eat enough.

I'm interested, what country do you live in?? That definition of life is good and shows the same thoughts we are planning. We have been spoiled over our life times with too much. YOu make me feel very luxurious in my way of life compared to your life style. It's sad to think that a farmer has no real value and yet they don't eat too much? Now I need to know where you are from. I hope you are not offended as I'm quite interested in your discussion. Still tho you have a computer do you not? Is that not a luxury? Do let me know.

You are from the Philippines. Do you live in the States? and, no, I do not feel awkward asking. I am interested in the ways people do live tho. We in America do quite nicley compared to others. What kind of work do you do to keep you out of trouble ! Glad you have computer too.

Oh I'm from the Philippines. I was just sharing a different view on the downturn of the economy, so I'm not insulted, and I also don't want you to feel awkward because of this. Yes having a computer is a luxury here. Our minimum daily wage is about $8 for * hours of work. And a lot of families here don't earn that much so if you don't have a stable job you're in for a lot of heartache. But our people are know for resilience so we find ways to cope. Our professionals try to work abroad and they sometimes get underemployed (I've heard of doctors mopping floors in hospitals elsewhere).

Does your property have a house, or would you have to have one built or moved in? It is a good idea to can some, I guess. I prefer frozen foods myself. It is good to have some water on hand, and a generator and other things to live with. Even if the economy does not tank, the fresh air and fresh food would be so good for you and for your husband as well. I do think we will see worse before we see better for the economy. It is pretty likely that they will delay giving you disability until you are eligible for early Social Security. My husband has that and can work at a low paying low stress job to go along with it. I will not be old enough to do that for at least six years. I have said I would keep on working until I could do that, but I quit this year due to stress and am trying to earn online instead. It is the old multiple streams of income, and be prepared thought.

Bryan is a worry wort but I think he's right on this economy thing . I want a garden too and it would still be best for both of us for us to sell here and go over there and be out in the country and not crammed up like we are. Not so sure about unemployment but I can't find a job !

Unemployment is over 10 percent here in Idaho as well. I know I have not been able to find a job either, but I do look. I am in college so that has been helping me out a little. My husband and I own a home and with the bad economy it will be a while before I can start remodeling the house. I will start planting things this Spring. At least by planting things one can make money by selling vegetables and fruit.

This sounds like a good idea. I hope the economy doesn't get any worse than what it is. I would love to have a garden because I love fresh vegetables. We used to have a garden all the time when daddy was living. I don't know how to plow the ground up for one thing since daddy always did that. Also, my brother-in-law owns the property I live on now and I wouldn't want to get in trouble with him. Kathy.

KNowing how to plow is no big deal. Surely there is someone around to teach you the basic principles. A roto tiller is great. I'd talk to that brother in law and ask him to help you and then help himself as well. You could all work together and that is the idea here to keep us all in good health and be able to make it on our own. I do think the economy is going to plummet and we'd all best be ready and look for ways of surviving. Take care Kathy and do talk to that brother in law. quita 88

You don't know my brother-in-law like I do. I don't mean to be talking about him in a bad way all the time but he's always in such a hurry! He always says he doesn't have time, anyway. He's a business man and he has a lot of appointments to keep. I doubt he would take the time to help me or teach me how to garden. He doesn't have any patience whatsoever, either. I don't know if he knows anything about gardening, anyway. You would think he would because he was raised on a farm. He was glad to get away from farming because as I'm sure you know, it is hard work. I wouldn't mind the hard work, myself. He's pretty well known here in town and most people who know him would tell you how he is. Kathy.

I think the economy is bad right now and I have a feeling it will get worse before it gets better. I know that my husband and I are struggling finacially and are doing our best to survive. We are both attending school just so we cant get some finacial aid to help us out. My husband is a Freshman and I am in my Senior year. I graduate this April then I will be able to go on to Grad school. I might wait until July to attend school so I can try to look for work. I want to be a substitute teacher and also take a break from studying. I am so burnt out.

I am sorry you are so burnt out. I understand cuz I am a nurse and know the feeling of wishing you could just back off for a little while and still you need to money. Always do what is best for you and hubby. Hang in there kiddo, things could get worse.

I am just trying to get through this semester then I will be able to take a break (I hope). I know my husband and I need the money so I may end up having to go back to school sooner than I plan. I wish you could take a break as well. I wish you the best.

It's a matter of planning and looking ahead. Whether the economy gets bad or not what do we have to lose??

I would go and do it. the economy is not going to be better soon and you are not going to be younger to think again. First thought is the best. Go and build your garden, build the house and be happy. I can send over some eco-tuorists to visit your place and buy some veggie form your garden or fruits from your orchard.

I think we will do it and no we are not getting any younger! We do not intend to build a house tho. A mobile will do us. As to the eco-tourists :) I'll let ya know when we have veggies but it takes years for fruit. Good thought tho. thanks

Hi quita88, I think yours is quite a wise decision. I am worried about the European economy at the moment. Greece seems on the verge of collapse. This nation is trying to seek help from the EU and international monetary funds. The problem is always they have spent much more than they could afford. Now Greece is finding it difficult to obtain loans to pay its debt. Despite I am not Greek, it affects me directly since Greece is in the EU as Malta. If Greece collapse this would be a hard slap on the face for the EU and the Euro.

The European Union would lose international credibility if it allowed Greece to collapse, Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn was quoted on Friday as saying. 'If Greece collapses and the European Union doesn't prevent that, we will lose our international credibility seriously and for a long time,' he told German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung. http://www.xe.com/news/2010-03-12%2011:12:00.0/1010265.htm?c=1&t= Obviously to help Greece, other Eu countries including Malta has to do well for such mistakes.

The economy is in a very bad shape indeed. I have noticed that the prices of fruit and vegetables have got up lots in the last few months. It would be very sensible for you and your husband to buy a piece of land. There you would be able to grow fruit and vegetables. Land is expensive in my home country so I wonder if land costs are more reasonably priced in your home country. Good luck with your plans.

Thank you for caring. We are moving slowly but we have the plans and it might be next week that we get started on all this but we will. We can go to the land and start a garden and do some work and I'm hoping to get a small mobile there in a couple of weeks. Food is the main priority and we have made plans to do some freezing and canning. Thanks for your interest as the economy is in terrible shape and we all have take care of ourselves.

On a piece of land you would be able grow fruit and vegetables. You might be able to have a shed where you could make some things to sell. You could make dolls houses and miniature furniture. These could be sold on the Internet. I suggest that you could buy some land for people to put horses on. There are so many different possibilities. Good luck in this poor economy.
