I do have to pay taxes on food where i live in Tennessee. Our tax rate is 9.75 & that adds alot to your grocery bill if u buy here. I can drive 10 miles & be in Kentucky & they have no tax on food. That is where i buy the most of my groceries. Would u drive the ten miles to keep from paying taxes on food? dO U HAVE TO PAY TAXES ON YOUR FOOD WHERE U LIVE?

The supermarket near my house - I took this picture when I had just bought my digital camera. I took pictures of everything. The supermarket was on annyversary with lots of offers.
Hi Jo, In my country everything has a tax that is 19% over the price. But the price that is shown has already that tax incorporated to what you pay. There are some 5 stars hotels where they will take away the 19% of tax if you prove that you are from another country. I do some shopping at two or three supermarkets I have near my house, but I´m acostumed to go to the same one and know where everything is. I believe that the best way for me to save on groceries is to go with a list and stick to the list. The two biggest supermarkets nearby are always fighting with each other for the costumers so they usually have to normal food at decent prices. They make up with the imported things they have. Some crazy people have enough money to pay in September over $20 for an imported watermelon when you can wait until December and get a giant one for $1 or a little bit more. I enclose a picture of the super 4 or 5 blocks away from my house.

We do not always realize how things are in places far from us. I hope with the 19% tax it is not too out of line. I like the idea of a $1 watermelon in season. Sounds yummy.

Watermelon sounds great. They never get that cheap here. It's one of my faves but wouldn't pay the high dollor for the imported one. With my luck it wouldn't be fitten to eat .

If you came here, dearest Jo, at the time of the watermelons, you wouldn´t need luck. There´s an old custom here. You buy it in the farmer´s market (that is a nice trip in itself because they say: "what do you want, my Queen?" Isn´t that lovely? And then they pick the watermelon for you and you say how will I know if it´s good. So they have a big knife and the make a triagular cut and take a piece out. If it´s not good, they´ll pick another watermelon. But they know which are the good ones. I usually sort of flirt with them and they expect that and do their best to give you the best fruit they have. They leave the worst fruit for those people that treat them like dirt because they are more poor. I wholly agree with them.

Hi fellow Tennessean. I would drive but it's more than a half hour drive to get over the Kentucky border for me. I can hit Gallatin's stores as I pass through each day so the gas savings makes up for the tax savings.

Hi, ANTIQUELADY. Where we live at we do have to pay taxes on our foods. But, I don't pay any taxes being that I have an EBT card. Being on Food stamps allows me to not have to pay any taxes.. I don't know if I would drive ten miles to keep from paying any taxes. If the drive is amount 20 minutes, I may do so. If not, I don't think that I will. I may go once in a blue moon if I had to.

I would drive that far to save. HOwever we are tax exempt due to my husband being a disabled veteran which is good. In MT you don't pay taxes untill it comes to your car tags then it costs you more. I hope any veterans or farmers are reading this cuz they too can save by applying at the Dept. of Revenue where they live or veterans can a letter of disablity to take or send to their dept. of revenue. It's important to save all you can in these uncertain days.

You are more than welcome. HOw is Ryan? My oldest Derek has been having baseball scrimmages and I've been going to them. I had to buy a stadium seat for my aching back and just now daughter in law tells me they have them for sale for their team in purple their school color-----now she tells me. But will be gone a lot now with two of them playing starting March 5th. Good to hear from you.

I also have a EBT card, food stamps, as both me and my hubby are disabled, so there are no taxes on groceries as long as you can eat it. But a few of our stores here in Ohio, Krogers, Cubs, Wal-Mart has started giving you a card, certain items in the store are worth points towards cents off on gasoline. At one point when gas was $ bucks a gallon I only had to pay like a $1.03 a gallon for it with the card after buying groceries. For instance brownie mix, which my husband loves brownies, was a dollar a box, plus had 8 cents on each box that went on the card, so I bought 5 boxes and that was 40 cents off a gallion right there. So as we shop even though we are spending we are saving in another way and we all have to have gas to run our cars. I don't think groceries should be taxed, but the government is going to get their no matter where it comes from.

Good morning & thanks for your response. I'm glad u get help w/your food. The cards are a big help to. If they do that at our wal-mart have't heard anything about it but probably wouldn't because i very seldom go to wal-mart. I have a hard time getting around so i stay away from there. U have a good week.

I only see government tax added on the restaurant bills. We pay heavily when we eat in restaurants or cafes. First we pay for the food we ordered and next come the service charge and then the government tax. No tax is added on the bills when we shop for groceries. I don't know whether there is hidden tax there and pre added to the prices as many items here are pricey. But certain items like rice and sugar are government subsidized and there prices remain stable.

Although my state is often known as Taxachusetts, we do not have to pay sales tax on food or clothing. I believe that taxes on essential goods like food, clothing, shelter, are just unconscionable. Already many residents of this state travel over the border to the neighboring state that has no sales tax on anything whatsoever. I can't imagine how many more would make the trip, no matter how far, if they began to tax food. I would definitely drive 10 miles, and not just to save the money the tax cost me, but also as a protest and to keep my grocery budget money out of the hands of greedy politicians. Everyone who can should shop out of state and send a message to the state house that taxing food is reprehensible. Think of how many food items some poor families must cut from the list in order to cover paying the tax? Shame on those politicians, burdening American families with taxes on the commodity most essential to life.

Everything and anything have taxes in my country except those on the sidewalks because they did not issue receipts. They give 20% discount to the oldies to any food chain outlets but as I saw in the receipt they only enjoying 8% discount because of the 12% value added tax.

SSSSHHHH! Don't tell NY State that. We have tax on everything except groceries. Some things we have double or even triple tax on. We have to drive 8 or 25 miles to a grocery store anyway. So 10 is not much. Our tax rate is 8%. I thought we had the highest. 9.75, almost 10 percent. That is amazing.

Here in my country we pay taxes for everything we buy. Government officials are even talking about increasing our taxes. It wouldn't bother me much if I see that the ordinary citizens really benefit from the taxes, but I'm so mad because these government officials just steal our money. They keep on saying that they need to increase taxes so that we could pay our debts, but I think this is not a solution at all. The real solution is for these selfish politicians to stop stealing our money so that we could have enough money to pay our debts. They've already increased our taxes many times, but we still haven't paid our debts.

Yes here in Colorado we have to pay taxes on food. I travel about 8 miles to buy my food I still have to pay taxes but Walmart Groceries are cheaper than the Grocery Store in the town I live in. I do though buy some at the Family Dollar and Dollar General in my town which are cheaper than Walmart.

Hmmm. If I'm going to buy a lot of food, then maybe I would, or I can compute first extra gas expense = food tax savings. Anyway, here in our country, foods here have taxes. Though, well, it something like, those foods that are staple, like rice, vegetables and meat, I think they are exempt from taxes, but the rest, and the cooked foods would have a 12% tax.. I hope I remember my tax right.

We all think that 12% is too high, well, except for those people who voted the Extended Value added tax law to be passed, that increased the tax from 10 to 12%..
