I did not know what bush fires were until I visited Australia. My friends kept talking about bush fires and the danger when temperatures reach over 40C. I am attaching a photo of an area that was hit by bush fires a year ago in Australia. What puzzles me is why people go and live there when there is such a great risk? Have you ever heard about bush fires? Are you afraid of bush fires?

Hi, ronaldinu. Any fire that can blaze very ferociously I am afraid of it. I would never move to Australia if they have many fires that flare up.. I will not put myself into an danger as this. I have never really heard of bush fires. I know that I have heard of fires in California's wildfires. Both are scary to me.

There are many suburbs where they are not at a threat by bush fires. But I would be afraid to live in t he countryside where bushfires are at a great risk

That is a good question. Why move or live there if it is a area that is prone to bush fires? Yes I have heard of them. I never have lived near an area where they are known to happen. We have fires they are just called wild fires or someone setting the woods on fire here. I have seen on the news were the state of California has a lot of forest or wood fires.

Yes, I am afraid of bush fires. I believe the smoke is enough to kill people and the fire can burn most things in its path. I haven't ever experienced the misery of a bush fire but I have heard about them happening in Australia. I know that there were bush fires on the edge of Sydney. I feel sorry for the people, the animals and the landscape.

I've heard of bush fires. We have grass fires here, but usually they're put out by the fire department before they get out of hand. No matter where you live, there are dangers. Flooding in some areas, destructive force winds, tornadoes, tsunamies, earthquakes, ice storms, sub-zero weather, avalanches, desert-lack of water or getting lost and dying in the heat, fires like out west that cover miles and miles of land and consume homes, etc.

Bush fires usually happen when the weather is too hot, and the heat causes the bushes to catch fire.. It's common nowadays due to global warming.. NOt only in australia, but some other countries are happening too, though australia is facing it much worse.. It's a natural thing, and ple cant help it.. As to why many others choose to live there, i guess, they dun think bush fire will affect them at all, when it's mainly started by our actions, to the earth.. haha =D

I live in fire country and you bet I am afraid of wild fires. On top of the danger to my animals and property the smoke settles in our valley and can ruin our whole Summer season. This is very important since tourist industry is our main money maker here and Summer is our prime time for that.

Likewise here, savypat...normally we have about 1000 residents, and that swells to over 5000 in the summer. Three years ago, we had a ferocious wild-fire, that lasted for 19 days before being brought under control...and then there were hot-spots still being tended until the middle of Sept. (July 23-to mid-Sept.) Very scary, as B.C. Ferries, refused to land here, so all that were threatened relied on their own personal boat, or others to get off the Island...it was a nightmare with waterbombers 24/7...helicopters, sirens...and working 24/7 providing Food for the "firefighters" that had to come from off Island. That is one time, I did a lot of re-thinking about living here. Our tourist industry income, that year...did NOT set any records! Cheers!

YES...YES...YES!!! And I did discuss this with you before, as three years ago, we had a large, very obnoxious BUSH FIRE on this small Island, with many homes evacuated...all services, including Ferry interrupted...and our only escape was by private boat...and that's why I bought one! Cheers!

hi ronaldinus then you never lived in Southern California where we are so dry most years that in the fall after a hot summer idiots think its fun to watch the pretty flames burning all over the hills and destroying homes and killing innocent people and hard working firefighters .the last three years we have had horrific fire seasons with acres and acres burned, many many homes destroyed, and some lives lost each year. The last year before my son and I were evicted, the fire came within a half mile of where we lived, then the wind shifted and fhe fire devastated the canyons where people had lived for years, and the terrain was so rough it was really hard for the firefighters to get into them to fight the fire, a lot was down with the big planes dropping water and flame retardant. Its not because people live here , its because there are fools who just have to start fires and so many times they do not catch these arsonists at all. so they go unpunished while innocent people suffer. Here we call them wild fires for they are either started accidentally , maybe lightening strike or cars back firein or campfires not carefully put off. on the other hand a lot of them were started on purpose by mentally ill arsonits who love to watch things burn.

A brush fire can happen just about anywhere and be caused by many things, so the only way to be completely safe from them is to live in a large city, which many people do not like. I live in Florida and we have brush fires here during our dry season. A few years ago there was a particularly large one that was burning around the rim of Lake Okeechobee, which is a huge lake near us. We were never in any danger because there is a canal between us and where the fire was but we had to deal with the smoke for over a month. I'm not afraid of brush fires because I have enough sense to get out of the area quickly if one starts. Local fire officials do an excellent job of alerting the public.

Yes, I've heard of bush fires, and we experience similar events, but we call them wildfires. I'm afraid of wildfires because they can move at lightning speed, and if you're not cautious, you can easily get trapped by one. The best thing to do is prepare for such an event. I keep the shrubs, grass, and other things that will burn a 30-foot distance from my house.

thats a good idea and a safety measure that everybody should take. Everybody should be prepared for such an emergency if you live in the countryside. I hope that you ll be safe and sound.
