Reminder: Pet Rabbits Are NOT Wild Animals!

Please, if you must rehome your rabbit either find it a home yourself or take it to an animal shelter. Dumping your rabbit in the park does not help your rabbit. It will be easily eaten by predators, die of the cold or of heat stroke depending on the season, and may die a slow and painful death with no human intervention. Even if you have wild rabbits in your area, they will not take your pet rabbit in as one of their own. This past week while running at a park, I saw a pet rabbit someone had dumped there. Unfortunately, I was unable to catch and save this rabbit. With all the rains and mudslides lately, I doubt it has a good chance of surviving. If the coyotes and hawks don't get to it first. How sad that someone could do that to an innocent creature. Please remind people that this is a despicable act and in some areas you can even be fined for such actions.

and cats can't survive either A friend rescued a rabbit in her neighborhood once, tore her up but she caught it and finally found it a new home I had some neighbors who were going to have to move because of jobs and they had a rabbit, Maggiepie had a co-worker who had rabbits and he came and took that rabbit home with him (this rabbit was hardly a pet, the child and all the neighborhood dogs were afraid of it), but it wasn't able to live on its own either so this was the best compromise that could be found.

Oh that is a very good point! Yes, even if someone is dumping their cat at a feral cat colony, they just don't live as long and generally do not have good lives, plus they damage the environment and wildlife in some cases. There is a feral cat colony near the ocean and thankfully it is very well maintained by wonderful volunteers, but it's sad that people continue to dump cats there and add to the problem.

I completely agree with that. When my ex-boyfriend and I broke up neither of us were able to keep our rabbit. I wanted to find a new home for her or take her to an animal shelter, but my ex-boyfriend and his mother tried to persuade me to take her to a forrest instead. They kept on saying that it was a lot easier and that the rabbit would have a nice life in the forrest. We had a big argument about this topic, because I thought that it was a horrible idea to dump it in the forrest, and I refused to let them do it. Fortuneately my friend offered to adopt our rabbit, and that solved the problem.
