What is right about answering a different question then what was asked?

What makes that right?
In the past few days, I have had some different discussions, about this and that. It seems that there are quite a few people, who, will say something just to say something, and it will have no relevance to the posted discussion. It might be something interesting or valuable, but it is unrelated.
Would it be okay to give that a negative rating? Perhaps, my friends here on mylot can help, and everyone on mylot is my friend, even if I am not polite to you, I still love you. What is right about answering a discussion with something that is completing unrelated? What makes that right? Ideally, you would answer the post directly, then say anything extra you had to say, and see what kind of response you got back from that. I would rather have one really long discussion in one response, then 16 short discussions in 16 responses. Maybe this is just me?
Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Constructive Criticism's?
Thank you for your time, I appreciate you.

I like your line of thinking because it's irritating when the question isn't addressed at all. I don't know that I would negative rate it. I mean there is a language gap here so I think in that case would just bypass it and not rate it at all.
If it's one of those kinds of people that bang out responses just for the sake of getting so many responses out a day, then I would negative rate that. It is those kind of responses that make it wrong.
The extras that people put in, I have to say I do love those (sometimes) because it can make a discussion fun or even carry it over into a newer topic. I have seen that before and have participated in it too.
I still say the original thought or question still needs to be responded to first. Otherwise, isn't that really responding to get the entire discussion off course? Now, if a person wanted to redirect something into something else, why not just start your own discussion instead. LOL, I've seen that a time or two too.

It would be like, if you were sitting next to me, and I asked you what you enjoyed most about the book I asked you to read, and you said, Oh, that Dr.Oz, says some of the craziest things. I would feel an urge to slap you, but I would definitely say, Hey "Are you {listening} to what I am saying, you can't be."
It may be the language gap, I agree, but I don't think so, I find that for the most part, people that don't speak english as a first language, have to take the time, to translate, and then think about, and then re translate. Then answer, it is usually answered just in a "that doesn't sound quite right, but I know what you are getting kind of way!" -Do you understand what I mean by that?
Then, there are those, that just post to post. If I was to sit and post 100 times in Mylot in one day, first off, it would take me about 8 hours. Because, I may have to research, and ask my wife what she thinks or feels about something. Think about the best way to word, and then I ramble.
I should focus on training my brevity. But, that is another story.
Thank you for your time, and sorry to rant. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you. Ho Opono Opono, I think that is what it is called, that is something new and fun as well.
I appreciate you.

Actually you will do well here without training your brevity. Answering completely and in great detail is an advantage at MyLot and will pay better than short and sweet. Your posts do make me think and I appreciate that a lot. I do not think I could ever post 100 posts in a day here.

Well Gerty, you just saved a whole bunch of people from a disguised pitch. If I am just helping one person think a bit more, and I am appreciated at the same time. I will smile and be content with my MyLot time.
Although, it would be nice to use it as a place to offer free cookies and energy drink mixes. I am still trying to figure out if that would violate the rules much.
Thank you for your time, I appreciate you.

I fear I may be guilty of doing this at times. A post may ask something that reminds me of something else and takes me over the hills and far away. I hope that in the end I do come back to earth and answer the original discussion, though. One of my personal criteria when I award best response is how well the response answers the originally posed question. I skip many discussions because I am to the point that I will not just say something to have a response. If I feel like it is going to be too hard to relate, or I have seen a lot of similar discussions, I will skip it. I think that although people who speak a different language do have to mentally translate to do a good job, we will also have people who do not care if their answer makes sense. they do not care to translate, but just jump in with both feet. To some people the money that they can earn here is significant. To others of us, it is just an extra cup of coffee or something like that. Some people do just post to post.

Well Miss,ms,mrs or sir....You let me know, I will use the appropriate from here on out...Gerty.
We all do this from time to time. It is almost our nature to shove our opinion on others, even if it is of little or no value to the matter at hand.
Sometimes, what results from people not doing it is good, sometimes it is a head ache. I like that criteria, I should mark more best responses...I to skip discussions when I can add nothing of value.
Yes, for some it is a significant income, and they care not what to post, but must needs post something. I empathize with those folks, and I know if they thought then answered they would earn more. I dearly wish for them all to learn that as well.
To me, it is a discount on items.
Anyways, thank you for your time, I appreciate you.

hi cjscott There is nothing thats right about answering a different
question than what is asked. this may show that the reader did not
really read the discussion closely but no don;t rank him or her negative as there's entirely too much negative ratings here, people rate negative for anything from disagreeing with the other persons view to just that person being someone they do not like. But I will do this, I will say from
your response its evident you did not read my discussion or you did not understand it, my question was not what you answered. go back and read it again. please. But CJscott I read one discussion over several times and tried to make sense out of it, and then answered, and was informed I was wrong. well this time the person writing the discussion did not really make the discussion clear, it was about the discuss-er being accused of raping his women friend and saying he was not guilty, but the way he wrote it he made out the person talking down to his friend was the one who was guilty of rape , it was worded so badly that I did not realize he was the one being wrongly accused, so it was hard to respond, in fact after wards I told myself do not respond when the discussion is about as clear as mud.

Right, so I agree with you almost completely. Far too many people do abuse the negative rating button. But, if there is no negative, how can you compare it to positive?
All in all, The Lamb Lies Down, pretty much had me rethink the thing, if it negatively effects the MyLot "Community" this leaves a lot to interpretation, but that will be my basis. I will let it go at that, and clarify things for others.
If it doesn't make sense to you after reading it through twice, I would suggest asking for clarification. That would have helped avoid that situation. I find the best way to do this is to paraphrase..So, what you are saying is "What you think they are saying, shorter and sweeter" is this true/right/correct?
In this way, you can not only have a better understanding of how to respond, but you both earn a little more.
Thank you so much for your feedback, I appreciate you.

It is not right to do so, unless the question is answered somewhere along the lines. I would not give a negative rating because it cannot really be ascertained why it happened. It could even be my fault for not making it clear enough.
I always bear in mind that it takes two to tango. When there is a misunderstanding both sides are at fault. The difference is in the degree of fault on each side.
I would probably give a negative rating if the responder makes at least one contradiction in the same post.

I agree, I however do give a negative rating if something can't be reasoned. But if I reason that it is a misunderstanding, I will forgo that.
It does take two to tango, but in communication 90% of the fault lies with the listener, for not asking for clarification.
If I asked a question, or made a statement, and a fellow mylotter asked for clarification before responding I would give a "++" rating, regardless of what else they said.
I appreciate you.
