When your computer tells you there are new updates ready to install, do you install them? I have gotten into the habit of ignoring them lately- I hope its not a bad thing. w

olisaur, You may choose to ignore these updates but your system will suffer in the long run. These updates and I am referring to the ones for your operating system and security suite are necessary or rather mandatory. They are usually fixes and patches for certain vulnerabilities which is be critical for the continuous smooth operation of your computer system. So, I would really advise that you do not ignore it and as for those you have missed out, you may want to check into your OS official homepage or use the OS update to check what you have missed out. As for your antivirus, just select "Update" from the operating control panel to do it and once done - conduct a full system scan for any malware or virus picked up when you were backdated. Take care and have a nice day.

Hi olisaur. Don't be embarrassed about not knowing so much about computers. I get these notifications all of the time and usually I will just ignore them. I don't like to install updates without first talking to my husband about it. Because certain things that I may install may harm my computer's hard drive and files. In the past, I used to install them, but now, I am reluctant on installing anything. I do want to but I just don't. This morning when I was about to get on the laptop, there were updates that needed to be updated on this computer. But the computer updated itself. I did not have to do anything. It was all done in less than 3 minutes. I thought that it would take a long time, but it didn't. I had 1 out of 3 updates that needed to be updated.

My husband is the administrator of this computer, and he has authorization to delete many things on this computer. He knows what this laptop can take and can't take. So, I try to rely on his trust. I do download things and clear my cookies. I do minor things but I will let him handle all of the major things with this laptop.

When this laptop needs updates, I will tell my husband about it so that he can make an inform decision if anything needs to be done. Because without me updating anything, I don't want the laptop to have problems down the road.

Of course. Your operating system needs to be updated because there are many people out there trying figure out a way of taking over your computer, so you need to update so your computer is not vunerable. Your anti-virus needs to be updated because there are new viruses coming out all the time and you cannot choose when one will hit you, you have to be ready. An out of date anti-virus is next to useless. Usually the updates for some of the other programs I will decide if there is a threat or not if I do not update. Quite often I skip a program if it is working well. My browser is IE6 and I have not obviously updated for a while. Some websites now are giving me a warning that they no longer support this older version. I guess at some point I will have to update that in order to surf, even though I use Firefox mostly.

I almost forgot it most of the times since when i am so busy surfing the internet it only slow down my surfing especially when I am at focus to play online games that i need to be fast so i often disregard those notification after all the things i wanna do its finish it is then i would install updates. Most of the times they are just from microsoft which a reminder and also good since it protects my computer against any viruses, spywares etc. i need to make myself reminded every now and then to give some attention to it as neglecting only makes my computer susceptible to internet threat.

I remember waht my professor said in our class when I was still in college that no software is complete that is why these software companies are developing updates and releases/deploys them in the internet to fix whatever vulnerabilities an installed software has. Downloading and installing updates enhances some installed applications in you computer so it's not bad at all. Restarting your is mandatory or required after installing updates to refresh your computer system and for the updates to take effect.

Hehe, I just finished installing 2 updates to my computer. It is always good to keep up with the updates because sometimes, the security of your computer is affected by the updates. If you choose not to install the updates, you'd better have a good antivirus software to protect your documents and things, because sometimes, viruses creep into your computer because of a loophole (which is fixed in an update). Windows sometimes likes to flood your computer with unneeded updates, too, like updates for Microsoft Office which change absolutely nothing, but I still install them. But all in all it is always better to be up to date than not being up to date :)

Yes, I do install updates. In fact, by me seeing this disccussion, helped mre realize I problaby had some, and so I checked and I did, and I installed them, as they were windows updates. I want to keep this laptop running sooothly, so I want to keep up with them. I had 5 to install, and now they are installed, I won't have to check right away. I find that my computer runs much better when I keep up wit the updates. Ifr you want to keep your computer running smoothly, then you better check them once in awhile and do them and you will be amazed how much better yoru computer will run. Take care, and happy mylotting.
